"I've never heard that claim. Perhaps you have."
On this site.
"I wouldn't call the examples you give "leftwing"."
Its all stuff I've heard from self-described "liberals" (who are actually strictly regimented in their beliefs). The last comment was from a famous feminist who was considered brilliant for saying the dumbest shit imaginable.
You have a point though in that this stuff isn't typical liberal beliefs. I was just trying to say certain liberals engage in this behavior more often because they hang out in circles where it is considered edgy and deep..
"Although, frankly, I would call that "negative intelligence". Negative, yes, but not intelligence, although I'll grant your point."
I call it negative intelligence because people are using their brains to come up with the opposite conclusion of what the facts support - and purposefully so - in an attempt to be thought of as "deep" for contradicting the conventional wisdom.
"In any case, the kinds of examples you give are cases where people feel an emotional need to believe something is true."
No doubt this is true sometimes. But I would say that often they don't have an emotional attachment to what they are saying at all. They just seem to think that saying something ridiculous sounds smart. They don't really give a shit about the people they are saying it about.
Anyway, I wasn't trying to apply this generally to anyone who says they are "liberal". Just like I wasn't trying to say all "cons" are ignorant. This is just an annoying phenomenom I've noticed and this site is a good place to find examples.
