Since Ray brought up Christianity in relation to this horror, I think Christians should not see events like this as the rumblings of an Apocalypse but as a call to practice charity and sacrifice for others--to walk the walk.

My daughter and husband were planning to go to Haiti prior to the quake to work in a medical clinic but were delayed---it's been pushed back to April---she tells me they've been told leptospirosis and other unusual diseases are a big problem now. I think the UN should get all nations of the world together to craft an Anti-Seismic Treaty that would ban earthquakes larger than 6.0 by 2020 and eliminate then altogether by 2050. We need to raise taxes to make sure this earthquake-prevention scheme is fully funded.

Reports say the tsunami could range anywhere from a foot to many feet high when it hits the shore in Hawaii. Perhaps the fact the earthquake was coastal rather than in the middle of the Pacific will lessen the tsunami. Let's hope so.

They had the 8.8 and then they had a 6.9 around the same area.

Hawaii is on tsunami alert.

Chile is much better at handling EQs, unlike Haiti which had nothing to begin with.

The world has been "on notice" since, well, the world noticed it was a world. I believe that was right after the enlightenment and the crushing weight of religious oppression was lifted.

I remember a few days before Banda Aceh, our family had been praying to be able to be a blessing to someone in need - my husband received a hefty bonus two days before and we were able to help from afar. We will do all we're able from this distance as I know other Christians will as well.

There are gigantic State-sized islands of garbage in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Do you imagine that might alter the effectiveness of thermohaline circulation? What about chemicals sprayed into the atmosphere - does that have any effect on albedo? If you believe that HAARP stations are able to heat areas beyond natural limitations perhaps you could envision that being used to energize and then direct hurricanes too? I didn't imply that they wouldn't. I only commented on what I believe is the Christian response to tragic events and that not every earthquake and catastrophe are omens of the Second Coming. More likely they are calls for charity.

In regard to the Apocalypse, Christ's first coming was anticipated, but who of the wise (the faithful Jews) of that time really understood the divine plan as it was unfolding right in front of them? So I believe it will be someday with the Second Coming. The wise (including those who are Christian) will not see it happening in front of them even when it is.

When will it happen and how? God knows, and I give it very little thought in my day to day life. I leave such things for God to worry about. I am having a difficult enough time trying to understand God's plan for me as it unfolds, never mind his plan for the entire world.

Yes, there have always been earthquakes, but the problems is much worse since peole began building large and heavy infrastructure like skyscrappers, bridges, damn, roads, etc. If you don't think putting all that weight on Mother Earth doesn't harm her you are a denier. We need to cut back on infrastructure projects for the good of the planet. We need to asses high taxes to build skyscrappers and even houses.

Watching the live feed from KHON was cool. There was this reef out of the water and in just a matter of minutes it was submerged again; Third wave. They think they lucked out. For example, the waves in Hilo were not at the harbor's natural frequency like the 1960 tsunami.

Yeah but the Hilo Harbor looks like crap now with all the sand kicked up. Not really a major issue compared to what it could have been but still sad to see it all messy.

It was cool seeing the shots from Diamond Head that's only about 10 miles from where I was born.

I got to Hawaii last Tuesday. I am staying at the Hilton in Waikiki. My brother in law and I watched it from the 29th (of 31) floor. Somewhat of a letdown. It looked like the tide came in and out three times in about a 35 or 40 minute period. It was noticable but no more extreme than a normal tide -- just quicker.

The oddest thing was a completely empty Waikiki Beach in the middle of the day. Got pictures of it all.

The waves on the North Shore the last few deays have been much more impressive.

Here are some pics I took of the "tsunami" today. Note the picture at the end of the channel in the photos titled "trough" and "surge". They are taken a few minutes apart. As I said upthread, it was more like a regular tide that happened in a matter of minutes instead of hours. Also, note the empty Waikiki. Anyone who has ever been here knows this is an otherwise impossible picture to take. It is usually shoulder to shoulder people. The ones at Waimea bay yesterday were much more impressive. LOL

What do you expect? Chavez probably turned the "earthquake machine" on but the power went out before it had a chance to really develop a good tsunami, in spite of making a bad quake....

Good photos, Goat. Glad you're okay and didn't get the full brunt of the tsunami. Just being able to see all the open and deserted beach footage is a worthy photo. You don't see that often on Waikiki.

This photo you took, Goat -- the one from the hotel with Diamond Head in the background -- is one of the best ones in your set. Great angle and the totally deserted stretch of beach makes for a very unusual shot.
