Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Thursday, February 25, 2010

Microsoft provided a DMCA notice alleging copyright infringement on Cryptome's proprietor John Young on Tuesday after he posted a surveillance compliance document that the company gives to law enforcement seeking information on Microsoft users. Young filed a counterclaim Wednesday arguing he had a fair use to publish the document, a full day before the Thursday deadline by host provider, Network Solutions. Still Cryptome was shut down by Network Solutions and its domain name locked on Wednesday. Shortly after noon on Thursday, the following notice was received by Young: Microsoft has withdrawn their DMCA complaint. As a result the site has been reactivated and this matter has been closed. Please allow time for the reactivation to propagate throughout servers around the world.

A new wrinkle today in the ongoing illegal censorship "war".

Cryptome's Ebay Paypal Account locked down

Earlier today, Cryptome posted an email sent to John Young by PayPal explaining the website's account was locked down.

"As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in the PayPal system. During a recent screening, we noticed an issue regarding your account," the email sent by the PayPal Account Review Department states. "For your protection, we have limited access to your account until additional security measures can be completed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

It appears Paypal used the excuse that Cryptome has recently received an increase in donations to shut down the account.

"During the past two weeks there have been news reports about Cryptome.org that has led to an unusual increase of donations," writes John Young. "Usually donations come in once or twice a week, as you can see from our PayPal account. Most recently donations have dropped to a customary small number after the recent surge."
