WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sales of new homes plunged to a record low in January, underscoring the formidable challenges facing the housing industry as it tries to recover from the worst slump in decades.

The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that new home sales dropped 11.2 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual sales pace of 309,000 units, the lowest level on records going back nearly a half century. The big drop was a surprise to economists who had expected sales would rise about 5 percent over December's pace.

I know this story is a fabrication because some economists didn't expect this to happen.

But, but, but,....BUSH!

Good. The bubble was only being artificially propped up with that $8,000 crap credit.

They were Keynesians, no doubt.

Well, look at the bright side. Just getting back to far-below-average trend will mean record sales increases. And imagine the headlines then! CorkySarvis will be back in a month or two, announcing soaring new home sales.

Our economy needs to generate 375,000 new housing units a month merely to replace depleted, condemned, and destroyed housing stock. That's not even taking population increases into account.

Yesterday was a surprise plunge in consumer sentiment. There is a widening disconnect between the Beltway and Wall Street, and Main Street. We'll see who's right.

Is that credit still going?
