House Democratic leaders have compiled a list showing that they have passed 290 bills that have stalled in the Senate, the latest sign that Democrats in the lower chamber are frustrated with their Senate counterparts.

The obstructionist party is blocking anything that might help American families.

They fear that if Congress is seen as doing anything to help average Americans out then the Republicons will lose in November.

They are really a pathetic lot.

Thank you, Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell?

One obstructionist and one inept majority leader.

Cry me a river.

Since '08 the Dems have had such strong majorities that any 'obstructionism' on the part of the GOP could be circumvented. Have you ever considered the possibility that what the Dems are pushing is a bucket of shit that most Americans don't want?

Since '08 the Dems have had such strong majorities that any 'obstructionism' on the part of the GOP could be circumvented.

Maybe yes, maybe no.

But you can't deny the non-stop obstructionism on the part of the GOP in the Senate.

And you really should try to.

Spud thinks that Obama shoulda taken the kid gloves off a while back, to be honest.

Be Well.

-Dems have had such strong majorities that any 'obstructionism' on the part of the GOP could be circumvented

Unless Repubes used the filibuster more during that time than any other in history.... oh, wait.... they did.

Well, since the 2 indie votes in the senate almost always caucus for the Dems, you are crying like a little girl. For 2 years your party has had a filibuster-proof majority - that is a luxury the Bush-lead GOP never had in the senate.

Sorry - a year and a half - Scott Brown changed all of that.

"For 2 years your party has had a filibuster-proof majority - that is a luxury the Bush-lead GOP never had in the senate."

Another luxury that Bush had that Obama doesn't?

An opposition party that uses the filibuster relatively sparingly. Democrats could have filibustered every bill, but they legislate with slightly more honor than that. Not much, but just enough.

-you are crying like a little girl.

That's mah lil' buddy Jeffy. Whenever he is wrong, he gets defensive and projects.

But, as a tolerant liberal, I understand the pressure on conservatives today; people who's Party has no plan for the future, no leaders for the future, and ... really, no future other than as corporatist pimps.

Or, the other side-of-the-coin could be that the Repubs, when in power, produce legislation that is more palatable to the Dem base than when the tables are turned.

Look at the Tea Party movement - is it pro-Republican? Hardly.

Cork, Cork, Cork.

I used our little disagreement as an excuse to borrow a quote from Wedding Crashers and use it in context. I am disappointed and also a little sad that you didn't catch the reference and run with it.

Whenever he is wrong, he gets defensive and projects

Actually, maybe you DID get it and your reply was too subtle for my stupid-ass to comprehend.

That I never saw Wedding Crashers is something I am very proud of. Kinda like never seeing American Idol or Lost.

Cork,

I've watched Idol on a couple of occasions and hated it. I tried watching Lost and couldn't get into it.

Wedding Crashers is a very funny movie - much of its humor would likely be appealing to you - based upon my observations over the last 6 years or so as to what you seem to find humorous.

Maybe so, Jeffy. But I saw Face Off once, with Nic Cage and Travolta, and my psyche can only stand so much now.

I'll check in rerun next time, though.

Sorry - a year and a half - Scott Brown changed all of that.

Franken was sworn in to the Senate on July 7, 2009

he was the 60th vote if the Dem. caucus stayed united

The tragedy is the disappearance of the unanimous consent agreement, most non controversial bills in the past were advanced that way with no need for a vote.

NO link but the Rebs. have objected to most.

Or, the other side-of-the-coin could be that the Repubs, when in power, produce legislation that is more palatable to the Dem base than when the tables are turned.

Jeff, you may want to note that the several of the bills that the Senate is sitting on have passed the house with over 400 votes, including the majority of House Republicans.

You may also want to note that several of the passed Senate bills that went through as many as 3 tries to break the threat of the filibuster passed with 90+ of the Senate votes.

The use of the filibuster threat is no longer about bill consideration, or slowing things down. It's become a political weapon.

Either break this stupidity now, or when/if things change, expect every last bill the GOP attempts to put through to be subject to the same tactics - or worse.

Yav,

I don't pretend that the GOP ISN'T full of shit - they are.

Having said that, on this issue - Obamacare - they are serving their constituents very well by opposing legislation than an overwhelming majority simply does not want.

JJ...check how many GB bills passed the Senate using reconciliation=51 votes

What a bunch of fucking pussies. If the Dems, with a 60 vote majority, can't get their shit together, don't go blaming the Republicans. The bigger question is, what is in those 290 bills? How much spending? How many are actually needed? How many more pet projects? How many more unnecessary laws and regulations? How much more government control?

Having said that, on this issue - Obamacare - they are serving their constituents very well by opposing legislation than an overwhelming majority simply does not want.

They don't want it until they find out what's actually in it. Then support switches to "favor." Also, the public overwhelmingly supports the public option. You think the GOP would offer that? Hell, the Dems can't even figure out that they should be going with the most popular idea in an election year.

How would public opinion change if people were fully informed about the content of the bills? It's hard to say for sure, but on average, the individual components of the bill are favored by a net of +22 points. An NBC poll in August also found that support went from a -6 net to a +10 when people were actually provided with a description of the bill.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Pfc. Langhorn distinguished himself while serving as a radio operator with Troop C, near Plei Djereng in Pleiku province. Pfc. Langhorn's platoon was inserted into a landing zone to rescue 2 pilots of a Cobra helicopter shot down by enemy fire on a heavily timbered slope. He provided radio coordination with the command-and-control aircraft overhead while the troops hacked their way through dense undergrowth to the wreckage, where both aviators were found dead. As the men were taking the bodies to a pickup site, they suddenly came under intense fire from North Vietnamese soldiers in camouflaged bunkers to the front and right flank, and within minutes they were surrounded. Pfc. Langhorn immediately radioed for help from the orbiting gunships, which began to place minigun and rocket fire on the aggressors. He then lay between the platoon leader and another man, operating the radio and providing covering fire for the wounded who had been moved to the center of the small perimeter. Darkness soon fell, making it impossible for the gunships to give accurate support, and the aggressors began to probe the perimeter. An enemy hand grenade landed in front of Pfc. Langhorn and a few feet from personnel who had become casualties. Choosing to protect these wounded, he unhesitatingly threw himself on the grenade, scooped it beneath his body and absorbed the blast. By sacrificing himself, he saved the lives of his comrades. Pfc. Langhorn's extraordinary heroism at the cost of his life was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

you can list anything you want but we political sluts who have been here a while know that im talking about a long line of obstructionist events that never made it to clouture votes.

and IM not badtalking dems on it but posters here who think the gop invented this idea the left has.

'the job of the opposition is to oppose'...and IM sure when the gop runs things AGAIN SOON, that statement will somehow find its way onto a reply to a post of mine.

I know this is hard to comprehend for the friends on the left side of the aisle..

But Franken was the 60th vote starting in what July 2009?

And when Ted died they put in another Dem until the election of Brown in January 2010.

So what was the problem with not being able to pass the House bills piling up in the shitter??

The Dems were in charge of the the committees and hearings and the agenda to vote for anything their little hearts desired.

The had SIX months to do anything and Reid choose to do nothing.

MURPHY

You conveniently forget Joe "I campaigned for John McCain and spoke at the GOP Convention" Lieberman.

He is NOT a Democrat. Lord knows what he is...

What's hard to comprehend is how someone who claimed to have voted for Hillary Clinton (MURPHY) - who claimed they'd have voted for her for President - is such a rabid right winger.

AU--I never said I voted for Hillary.--Ever.

And Lieberman has no problem voting with the Dems.

You might get a 'no' on the cap and trade from him.

But the list that Mike puts forth is busy work and wouldn't or shouldn't have problems passing the Senate.

Where did you ever come up with the idea that I voted for Hillary?

afk..."you can list anything you want but we political sluts who have been here a while know that im talking about a long line of obstructionist events that never made it to clouture votes."

Afk...you are not suggestion that the Dems. have used " obstructionist events" more than the Repub. are you?

And the "list anything you want" quantitatively shows that the Repubs have taken opposition (obstruction )to an unprecedented level
------------------
afk...'the job of the opposition is to oppose'.

Unfortunately there seems to be opposition for opposition sake/advantage solely for electoral political reasons
If you are truly in opposition, why would you vote for cloture on bills you threatened to filibuster?

Cloture Motions - 110th Congress
From January 4, 2007 through January 2, 2009, 139 cloture motions were filed.

Unemployment Compensation Act of 2008
motion to proceed..........89 - 6

Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, 2008
motion to concur in the House amendment to the Senate amendment.............83 - 12

Court Security Improvement Act motion to proceed
93 - 3

UC=Unanimous Consent

Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, 2008
motion to concur in the House amendment with an amendment.....................
.UC

Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act
motion to proceed...............UC

There is plenty more how is this opposition?

It's all about a calculated political strategy of being able to go to the electorate and say the Dems passed nothing, the Dems can not govern put us (Repub) back in.

On Monday, the Senate voted for cloture on the Democratic jobs bill, 62-30. Today, they passed the bill itself in a vote of 70-28.

The switchers who voted no on cloture but yes today:

Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
Thad Cochran (R-MS)
James Inhofe (R-OK)
George LeMieux (R-FL)
Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
Roger Wicker (R-MS)

I voted against it before I voted for it...how did that go over?

Mike--the political strategy of the repubs is the over reaching and over spending by the Dems to put them out of office.

Now the repubs did not do a ggod job on spending the last time they were in charge. it was gross and they paid for it by losing elections.

Can the repubs be trusted?

Beck was saying at CPAC that both parties are terrible.

The dems want to tax and spend and the repubs will just spend.

So they have to ask for the trust of the American people to win in November.

Because the Dems have one play book and they are losing..

BTW--the 'jobs bill' wasn't that much to balk at in the first place.

More spending --but 15 billion is small potatoes. Will it actually do something for jobs remains to be seen.

"Well, since the 2 indie votes in the senate almost always caucus for the Dems, you are crying like a little girl. For 2 years your party has had a filibuster-proof majority - that is a luxury the Bush-lead GOP never had in the senate.

WRONG on two counts:
1. The Democrats did NOT have a filibuster-proof majority (either in actuality [like having 60 Senate seats] nor in perception [like the Independents who definitely did NOT necessarily vote in the Democrats favor. Sen. Lieberman ring a bell?]) and

2. Even IF you still want to suspend belief over the reality of the situation, Sen. Franken wasn't sworn in until JULY 7, 2009. That's only about SIX MONTHS until Sen. Brown was sworn in (and that's not even counting the holidays nor the time Sen. Kennedy was absent due to poor health!).

Tru--the MA governor put in a dem to replace Kennedy and he voted for the HC bill --they had 60 votes.

Kennedy died in August

The party of the "up or down" vote has gone back to it's obstructionist roots.

bill to improve absentee ballot voting; a bill to improve cybersecurity;

Real bucket of shit there huh? Job security for veterans. More buckets of shit.

Face it your party has as it's only agenda obstruct as much as possible, as many bills and as many appointees as possible. Your party is pitching a little hissy fit like a bunch of three year olds when they cannot get a toy at the store.

The party of no ideas.

Whatever happened to the notion of "up or down votes" Jeff?

"Tru--the MA governor put in a dem to replace Kennedy and he voted for the HC bill --they had 60 votes.

#41 | Posted by MURPHY at 2010-02-24 03:25 PM"

So, what I wrote is correct ("and that's not even counting the holidays nor the time Sen. Kennedy was absent due to poor health!").

The Democrats did NOT have 60 Senate seats. To claim otherwise is JUST NOT TRUE.

OBVIOUSLY, the Democrats might get 60 votes in the Senate (regardless of the make-up of the Senate), but that's not the point is it?

Just in case it got overlooked: The point is that the Democrats did NOT have a filibuster-proof majority, nor did they have it for two years (nor even for "a year and a half").

We can debate about the good/bad points of bipartisanship and/or how "toothlessly" the Democrats have handled their situation (and we might even find agreements!) and/or our individual 'philosophies', but the number of Senate seats is not up for debate. It's just a simple fact.

Senate sitting on 290 bills already passed by House.

Cause its a lot easier to pay off a handful of senators than dozens of congressmen. Any democracy raping lobbyist knows that.

"Tru--the MA governor put in a dem to replace Kennedy and he voted for the HC bill --they had 60 votes."

Baloney, Joe Lieberman is not a Democrat and he refused to vote cloture with the Democrats.

Baloney, Joe Lieberman is not a Democrat and he refused to vote cloture with the Democrats.

He has caucused with the Dems a vast majority of the time. Once the public option was stripped from the senate bill, he voted cloture with the Dems.

What was interesting was the vitriol directed toward him when he took a stance on principle, yet when Landrieu and Nelson took a stance and capitulated only after being bribed, most lefties and Democrats seemed OK with it. Basically, it was OK to hold out for the purposes of greed and personal gain, but Goddammit if an independent held out on a provision on principle.

they had 60 votes

LOL.

The "Super-Majority Myth" again?

Reality is that the Dems only had 60 votes between the time Franken was seated (after 7 months of delaying tactics) and the time Brown was elected.

And that's only if you count the two independents as Dems which they aren't.

And it doesn't take into account the Blue Dog Dems.

Nor does it take into account the unprecedented obstructionism of the GOP Senators.

But go ahead and spin that myth.

Be Well.

Nor does it take into account the unprecedented obstructionism of the GOP Senators.

Unprecedented?

The Dems went full-left ahead!

The Stimulus? 6% believe it actually helped the economy; oh, and it cost future generations $787 Billion plus interest.

Capntrade? DOA in the senate. Why? Because it will further emasculate an economy that is currently on life-support.

Obamacare? Last poll I saw had it at 36% approval.

Lockstep opposition to all of this shit isn't unprecedented, it's common-fucking-sense.

"The Stimulus? 6% believe it actually helped the economy; oh, and it cost future generations $787 Billion plus interest."

Estimates are that it created or saved between 1.5 and 2 million jobs.

"Obamacare? Last poll I saw had it at 36% approval."

Put the Public Option in it and then check the polls. Much of the opposition is because it isn't strong enough reform.

Would like to see a 'detail' of the jobs created and saved.. not just macro numbers.. and, also how they really measure this statistic.. but, I would imagine that info will never surface..!!!!

This is Great! You are admitting it. This is healthy!

Who said we National Health Care?

Put the Public Option in it and then check the polls. Much of the opposition is because it isn't strong enough reform.

Or give people a brief on what's actually in the bill and it changes from -6% to +10%:

How would public opinion change if people were fully informed about the content of the bills? It's hard to say for sure, but on average, the individual components of the bill are favored by a net of +22 points. An NBC poll in August also found that support went from a -6 net to a +10 when people were actually provided with a description of the bill.

www.fivethirtyeight.com

It would certainly enhance some support if anyone could detail, in laymen terms, what they are suggesting in the bill, although it is still not a good bill..
but, with total lack of credibility from the top, starting in the oval, and a continuing 'behind the scenes' approach to everything (I think they forgot how to spell transparency), it is obvious why part of the lack of support is there.. would be very beneficial, but unlikely, if they could present REAL specific examples of how people would be affected.. all of the 'high level' spin does not resonate with most of the voters and only gets worse when it changes by the moment and is 'rushed' through... one really wonders if there is any ONE group or person that really understands it anyway... too flagrant of a position just to get something passed..all about scorekeeping, not substance right now..!!!

"Obamacare? Last poll I saw had it at 36% approval."

If we follow the Constitution, then the "public option" would be handled by the state.

This is a very good idea and I think Congress should focus on that rather than having a national plan.

A National Plan will give us Medicare/Medicaid which is half an idea.

This is the way I see the concept of "federal funds".

When you start moving the responsibility of the state up to the federal level, i.e. education, police, infrastructure (roads and bridges), welfare/healthcare... You will see quality begin to fall.

Here's the reason for that... follow the money. Taxes are paid in to the Feds and to the State from individuals of the state. That many goes back to the state through dept of education, transportation, earmarks, Medicaid, and others...

We all know this.

My point is that the attention to the financial stability of the state turns from state taxes to federal money sent back to the state.

First of all, where does the concept of the Federal Government sending money on a regular basis in the Constitution?

It's not there. We made it up!!!

Having a Federal Dept of Education seems like a good idea, but it's not working.

Having a Federal Dept of Transportation seems like a good idea, but it's not working!

Having a National Medical system (Medicare/Medicaid) seems like a good idea, but it's not working. Medicare is due to run out and Medicaid is a dismal failure.

Why is Medicaid a dismal failure? Because the state spends all the money and have to beg more from the Feds.

This is the common thread among all of the "Federal Programs". They all seem to run out of money and some states have to beg for more handouts than other states.

What I'm getting to is that self-reliance among the individual is a difficult but fulfilling achievement. It's almost impossible to do this at the state level.

We saw a lot of this concept after the "Stimulus" was passed. Democrat governors went and sucked up as much "free" money as they could to bolster their huge unemployment payments and more importantly to them, keep unnecessary state jobs that were slated to be cut. It was like watching a Federal Trailer pull up in a Katrina neighborhood... Free Money!!!

Must you?

This is not a forum for long speeches.

Anyway... A HUGE part of fiscal responsibility is in the brilliance of the Constitution. The State is responsible for the welfare of its residents. There is nothing in the Constitution about a National Welfare Plan...

In other words, the public option must be handled at the state level.

Give it up, Doc.

What are you trying to accomplish?

I'll bet you are a 90 lb weakling so you come to the Retort to "protect your Messiah".

LOL!!!!

I wonder -- not often, but whenever he's teetering on the brink of losing it, like now -- whether Eddie's caregivers use an angstrometer or a nanometer to measure the length of his incandescently flammable fuseling.

You are a true patriot and a dear friend. I appreciate the kind words.

Ditto

"You are a poser and a little snot-nosed twit who thinks he's actually saying something with one-liners."

Who, Doc? Awww, c'mon. Doc is just a fuzzy-bearded "professor" in some nondesript college who is idle most of the time and writes some dynamite stories for our literary enjoyment. His one-liners are OK, but his epic accounts of the adventures of Vernon and others are works of art. DeadPud thinks that HE is the DR nobel laureate but he can't hold a candle to our own DocSarvis.

For you deficit hawks...

According to CBO, any costs related to new post office designations, which include the cost of changing the name on the building, signs, and maps, are not significant.

What purpose does it serve to change the names? Why should we pay big bucks to have some jerk-wad congressman come up with dumb shit things?

How about spending some time getting rid of a whole bunch of "blue laws"? How about doing some reform to what the lawyers can do like tort reform?

Gee, Jest, now you got me all goosey. You free for lunch?

Jeebus, Eddie, 101's a closeted rightwinger who kills small animals for fun and begs his neighbors for a chance to babysit their kids, but the day you kick his or anyone else's ass will be the first.
You're welcome 101...

#67 | Posted by Doc_Sarvis

LOL!!

101 is a poser and you're an idiot for not seeing it.

But, Doc, please grow up!

You're, what? 50ish? A Professor at a small University--I'm guessing and trying to remember from past posts.

Your behavior on the Retort doesn't match that, does it? On the Retort, you are an insincere bright child of 17 who wants to get it over on the man!

You're not "doing" one of your students, are you?

Eddie, for your limited purposes, I am The Man.

Not the way I'm "doing" you, Eddie.

Not the way I'm "doing" you, Eddie.

#80 | Posted by Doc_Sarvis

Ah! Ok, but Doc, in reality, we all know that you are fantasizing.

OH NO! You fantasize about your students too? Come on, Doc!!

First, I imagined you trying to hold on to your youth by dating a student, now you just inferred that you only think about them.

Doc, the beatings can stop any time.

say Uncle...

Actually, Eddie, I didn't "infer" anything. Truth told, if I "inferred" from my own statements I'd be nearly as nuts are you, Eddie. If you need a dictionary that badly, I'm sure one of your caregivers will, albeit grumpily, oblige.

Doc, I'm just giving you back your own medicine.

Carry on...

Edd, If you think you are going to get a sensable arguement out of dok, you are dreaming.

As you have seen, he is insulter-in-chief. He is real good at name calling too. He may be half-assed-good at cut and paste but doesn't have a thought of his own that he will commit to print.

Oh, c'mon, Snoops, you only say that because you've gotten your tail caught in a crack here on numerous occasions by attempting to pass off lies as fact. Eddie's problem is different from yours. He's just immature. But he gives some signs of being able to read and, occasionally, probably even understand what he's read. Your debilities run much deeper.

Are you trying to being serious, here? Because if you are, you sound like a "serious" drunk trying to pick a fight. You attack me, I knock you flat on your ass. YOU GET UP and attack me again, I avoid you and direct you and your momentum carries you into the table where your 21-year-old date and other students are sitting. Now your mad! Now you want to fight. You attack, I knock you down. You attack again I knock you down. I keep telling you. Give it up!

Come on, Doc. Ignore me... I'm behaving like you and you don't even know it.

You attack, I knock you down. You attack again I knock you down. I keep telling you. Give it up!

Put down your purse, Eydie.

Ignore me...

It's ok, Sniper. I really enjoy putting him in his place. He gets respect for his outrageous ridicule, but I'm giving him a taste of his own medicine and he's buckling.

But, Doc, you should be impressed. I don't spend this much time on anyone else. LOL!!!!

Oh, I'm not kicking ass. I'm staying away from the ass!

Just giving you enough rope.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease, ignore me!

So you see a big black woman holding a purse (Eydie) and a small skinny white guy attacking her (Doc)?

I see her stepping back as Doc rushes avoiding and slapping the shit out of him in the back of his head as head goes by.

LOL!!!

You're really awfully boring, Eddie. Like one trick pony, but without the inherent inteterest of a pony's presence. It's clear that if I move along to another thread you'll be left by yourself, Eddie. So, let's do it that way. You stay here, I'll move along. Nurse your sore ass and don't forget to turn out the lights when you depart.

Your concessions are the best, Doc.

I'll give you that much Doc, you lose, but you don't give up your honor.

I respect that.

LOL!!!

Would like to see a 'detail' of the jobs created and saved.. not just macro numbers.. and, also how they really measure this statistic.. but, I would imagine that info will never surface..!!!!

Sniper...#27 was concerning the Republicans blocking everything coming over from the House including something as innocuous as naming a Post Office after a fallen Medal of Honor winner among other KIA veterans.

So are you against the "Legacy Project" Is this a waste of politicians time?

The Reagan Legacy Project aims to fulfill its mission by naming significant public landmarks after President Reagan in the 50 states and over 3,000 counties of the United States,

290 -- a good start.

House Democratic leaders have compiled a list showing that they have passed 290 bills that have stalled in the Senate, the latest sign that Democrats in the lower chamber are frustrated with their Senate counterparts.

Here's to hoping they sit on these 290 bills...and rotate!

These clowns need to quit finding ways to pass more BS laws and reforms and the the hell out of the way!!

Cool West Wing quote:
There was a freshman democrat who came to Congress 50 years ago. He turned to a senior Democrat and said, 'Where are the Republicans? I want to meet the enemy.'
The senior Democrat said, 'The Republicans aren't the enemy.
They're the opposition. The Senate is the enemy.'
Those days are over.
