I've always wanted to work for Mythbusters.

hmm, more news we gotta get from the UK . . .

when Americans get our Fed Gvt back under constitutional control, AND get this climate shit sorted out it'll be interesting to see how the chips fall for the big3 msm (abc, cbs, nbc)

they have been telling us how what think molding our opinions & for generations . . .

after the Obama/msm fiasco, perhaps Americans begin independent critical thinking

and, with all the info available to us, why do we need them again??

to chose deoderant & jeans?

Nature is a top notch publication to be in, it is the best of the best......

Once again proving confirmational bias, and that
peer reviewed science is only as good as the peers that do the reviewing.

Kudos for the retraction though.

Wow that's deep.

Top notch journals also tend to fall for sexy ideas more easily.

If you're lucky enough to be in a current hot field, you can get into a big journal with considerably less than you'd have to have otherwise.

Mysterytoy,

Honest question-why are you so obsessed with the climate debate?

Maybe it's just my perception, but it seems you post a large % of the climate debate articles on the DR and are always commenting on them regardless of who posts them.

And another one bites......................THE DUST!

'....ashes, ashes, all fall down'

Good observation. I just might be obsessed with it.

Is that a bad thing?

"Below you can watch a video on the impacts of sea level rise on coastal communities in Orissa, India. The poor village literally got sucked into the rising ocean. The sea used to be a half day walk away, now it has claimed their village."

"It was widely reported in November 2005 that the islands have progressively become uninhabitable, with an estimate of their total submersion by 2015. The islanders have fought for more than twenty years against the rising ocean, building sea walls and planting mangroves. However, storm surges and high tides continue to wash away homes, destroy vegetable gardens and contaminate fresh water supplies. On November 24, 2005, the Papua New Guinean government authorised the government funded total evaucation of the islands, 10 families at a time; the evacuation is expected to be complete by 2007. It has been estimated that by 2015, Carteret Atoll will be largely submerged and entirely uninhabitable."

One guy makes an error in a paper, catches said error and withdraws his paper; That's how it works.

Sea levels are still rising.
Deal with it.

23 annual tide gauge records plus satellite altimetry after it became available: http://www2.grist.org/ gristmill/images/user/6932/ Recent_Sea_Level_Rise.png

Didn't the sea also swallow up Atlantis?

Good observation. I just might be obsessed with it.

Is that a bad thing?

No.

I really wasn't being snarky. Just curious as to why you're so in to this specific topic.

I appreciate your comments. I never really thought about it but I certainly will be reflecting on it in the days to come.

You are right I believe and I don't have an answer as to why. Thanks for your comment.

It might have something to do with the fact that I only believed in "Man Made Global Warming" briefly until I had time to formulate my own opinion.

This was difficult for me since the evidence was overwhelming against my own theory but I stood behind it.

It's possible that I'm looking for evidence to say, "I told you so."

That's the best explanation I have for you today but I will without a doubt be thinking about this in the days to come.

Thanks for your honest opinion and thank you for not being insulting. I do appreciate it.

Global warming is bullshit.
Co2 is good for the planet.
It's one of the four elements of life on earth.
Water. sun light, Co2, and oxygen.

If the government can tax one of the basic elements of life, they got us by the balls!
It's a scam. And it's falling apart. Thank god!

When I was a kid it was a joke that the Dems would tax air if they could. I guess it wasn't a joke.

There are some islands that are sinking. That doesn't mean ocean levels are rising.

Isn't it funny how even though there is all this talk about rising sea levels there has not been a peep out of New Orleans.

The future will not be kind to stupid peope.

"stupid peope." => stupid people.

Almost self-retorted there.

Figures from the National Tidal Centre show sea levels along Western Australia's coast are rising at a rate double that of the world average.

* * * *

And how do you know that the coast of Western Australia isn't sinking?

In your link, it says that global sea levels are rising by 3 mm a year. Forgive me if that doesn't cause me to run to the hills. Nevertheless, the sea levels in those two place are rising at 8mm per year.

Now, assuming the people who were doing the measuring weren't the same retards who have messed up the temperature readings, wouldn't that suggest that, elsewhere, sea level rises are considerably below average? And that, over the course of the next several decades, people could just move there?

That's a long way from "Happy extinction, you deserve it!"

3mm a year.

"Figures from the National Tidal Centre show sea levels along Western Australia's coast are rising at a rate double that of the world average. * * * * And how do you know that the coast of Western Australia isn't sinking?"

Australia probably still believes in Global Warming, thus their seas are still rising. No Doubt the water in Zat's pool is still rising, too. In all seriousness, though, it's interesting to note that at no time has any GW scientist actually tried to calculate the actual truth of such a statement. It should be easily discernible whether the land is sinking or the sea is rising. The Great Lakes are an excellent example. As the surrounding landmass continues to rise post the last ice age (depressed due to compression from the ice) the lake level on the south shores seems to be dropping, when in reality the land is rising. Tectonic forces, too, are far more likely than GW to be changing land/sea levels.

This is a joke, right? The four elements?

LOL no wonder you're crazy and spooked by everything, you've been transported here from ancient Greece evidently.

BTW NONE of the things you list are elements.

I'll admit it's been a while since the 6th grade but I'm pretty sure Oxygen is still one of the elements listed in science textbooks.

Maybe you should LOL at yourself?

He's referring to the elements in the Periodic Table. He means water, sunlight, CO2 and oxygen are necessary for life. While technically not complete, he would be right. The four elements of ancient times were believed to be water, air, fire and earth.

Correction.
He's NOT referring to the elements in the Periodic Table.

I am LOLing myself actually.

I saw oxygen but read air.

I can appreciate being able to say "I told you so."

For 15 years we've had to endure asses like Zat screeching and screaming about AGW, about how everything that wrong in the world is our fault: my house, my car, my food, my a/c, etc.

It's like listening to a bunch of Jehovah's Witnesses while they're smoking crystal meth.

They won't engage in any discussion, but can only scream that they are right -- and righteous -- and to disagree with them is a grave and serious thing.

So sure, it's nice to have a more reasonable attitude come to light. And if it also lets you slap some asshole across the face and say "I already told you to STFU." Well, that's a bonus.

One guy makes an error in a paper, catches said error and withdraws his paper; That's how it works. Sea levels are still rising.

That's certainly what other evidence would suggest. Even with this erroneous paper, it might prove to be an underestimate of rising sea levels, not an overestimate.

Perhaps you would be more open to the actual science if you didn't regard the whole climate change debate as a personal attack on your lifestyle. The fact that you feel defensive about your car, food and AC doesn't have anything to do with whether the science is accurate or not.

In the 15 years you feel put upon by climate change proponents, have you been required to do a single thing in your life to reduce the problem?

Hallelujah! Nanc still at 80% brain functionality!

Thank you, jackass - since most people only use 10-15 percent of theirs!

Oh, I have a feeling they know shit...quite well, as a matter of opinion.

I meant you only use 80% of what the normal person uses Nanc. Don't ever take anything I say as a compliment. It never will be.

Own it, jackass. You probably think five out of four people would agree that you are good with fractions. Accept that you complimented me and move on and have a great day!

Elcid reposted this - go compliment him now.

The water in Zat's pool is still rising. And apparently the water in Jackass' brain, too.

If you suffer misfortune I'll have a great day Nanc.

#6 - okay, let me think of something to make your day great and I'll get back to you.

After 15 years of climate change proponents telling the rest of us what will happen if we don't change our ways, I've yet to meet a single one of them who lives accordingly.

For a bunch of clowns who believe that the annihilation of the human race is nigh if we don't radically transform our way of life--FAST!--they sure don't seem to mind contributing to the problem. They're like a bunch of drunks at a party, trying to get in as much free booze as they can, before it runs out.

let me think of something to make your day great and I'll get back to you

Consider this gem stolen! I'm still wiping down my monitor from a mouthful of Dr. Pepper...

That's funny, this statement largely describes the anti-GW crowd as well.

However, the problem with the anti-GW crowd is they don't really have any data to back their position. Not even reanalysis of existing data. Just opinion pieces from newspapers and bloggers nitpicking at individual mistakes and attempting to apply that to everything else afterwards.

"Hallelujah! Earth STILL At Approximately 80% Water!"

Yeah, but you can't drink most of it.

Saying that the rise of sea levels is "unknown" doesn't mean the seas aren't rising. It could be four times the amount the report claimed. Only close minded people would think that the link said the seas weren't going to rise.

OK Nanc.

Now tell me why what you posted is irrelevant.

I know you can do it. It's been discussed repeatedly on climate change threads.

...well, when the snow melts...

"Record snowfall in Moscow..."

Record amount of precipitation in Moscow...
FTFY

Floods in Madiera.

All predicted.

"Numerous empirical observations and models of the global climate confirm the hypothesis that global warming enhances the global hydrologic cycle. For instance, a global warming by 4C (7.2F) is expected to increase global precipitation by about 10 percent. Models suggest that the increase is more likely to come as heavier rainfall, rather than as more frequent rainfalls or falls of longer duration."

Cranc's not real bright.

"Record snowfall in Moscow..."

Note that it's not record low temperature, but a record snowfall rate, as the predictions bear out.

And it's going to get more interesting fast.

And the headline is bogus. But considering the moron who posted the thread, that comes as no surprise.

Agreed.
But I think we can also agree that too much of any of the four is not good, which is the AGW argument (in very simple terms).
