Glenn Greenwald: Joseph Stack deliberately flew an airplane into a building housing IRS offices in Austin, Texas, in order to advance the political grievances he outlined in a perfectly cogent suicide-manifesto. Stack's worldview contained elements of the tea party's anti-government anger along with substantial populist complaints generally associated with "the Left" (rage over bailouts, the suffering of America's poor, and the pilfering of the middle class by a corrupt economic elite and their government-servants). ... Despite all that, The New York Times' Brian Stelter documents the deep reluctance of cable news chatterers and government officials to label the incident an act of "terrorism," even though --- as Dave Neiwert ably documents -- it perfectly fits, indeed is a classic illustration of, every official definition of that term.

It's just become a malleable, all-justifying term to allow the U.S. Government carte blanche to do whatever it wants to Muslims it does not like or who do not like it (i.e., The Terrorists).

See how simple that is?

I dont think any religion tells it's followers to go out and kill innocent non-believers.. oh wait.. Islam does..

That is simple

Vernon's post says it all. I didn't think he would ever get it even if it was his concept of satire.

Yep Christianity never did that. The Catholic church never supported religious fascist who happen to be mass murderers. Wait a second...Um, ah, just forget this post....

I guess GIF forgets the crusades and the modern day crusades you know the christian soldiers in iraq.

She also forgets Franco and church support for terror regimes in South and Central America who were led by "good" Catholics.

"It's just become a malleable, all-justifying term to allow the U.S. Government carte blanche to do whatever it wants to Muslims it does not like or who do not like it (i.e., The Terrorists)."

What is the US government doing to law abiding Muslims?

"I guess GIF forgets the crusades and the modern day crusades you know the christian soldiers in iraq."

Modern day crusade? The Catholic Church was against that war. And it was obviously all about money. And you have the nerve to talk down about someone else while saying something so awesomely stupid?

If you're that desperate (as in willing to make a complete ass of yourself) to find a present day example of Christian leaders fomenting violence on anywhere near the scale of Islamic leaders, its because such examples don't exist.

all muslims are for kiling innocents etc?

some muslims killing innocents

some christians killing innocents

"We are on God's side. This is not a war between Arabs and Jews. It's a war between God and the devil."

"I want to go on record as telling you that I believe the greatest threat to the American way of life, to the Constitution of the United States of America and to the gospel of Jesus Christ, is the religion of Islam as it stands today"

The Catholic Church was against that war.

Do I need to explain to you the relationship between bush, the pnacers and the billiionare Rev. Billy Graham?

Charles Stanley, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, whose weekly sermons are seen by millions of television viewers, led the charge with particular fervor. "We should offer to serve the war effort in any way possible," said Mr. Stanley, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention. "God battles with people who oppose him, who fight against him and his followers." In an article carried by the convention's Baptist Press news service, a missionary wrote that "American foreign policy and military might have opened an opportunity for the Gospel in the land of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob."

For his part, Jerry Falwell boasted that "God is pro-war" in the title of an essay he wrote in 2004

"all muslims are for kiling innocents etc?

some muslims killing innocents

some christians killing innocents

Sure if you want to move the goalposts and oversimplify everything to the point where nothing has meaning, then you're making great points.

But if you want to have a scrap of intellectual honesty, you would have to acknowledge:

Although there are violent members of both religions, many Muslims use Islam to justify their violence as a religious duty. The most violent Christians use secular justifications and their real goal is usually money. Their actions can't be reconciled with their stated relgious beliefs. There are Christians who use religion to advocate violence but they are a negligible minority that talks more than anything else. Muslim clerics teach jihad as a religious obligation. Millions of people chant violent slogans during Muslim religious services every day. Christian clergy enouraging violence at all, let alone during religious service, does not happen on anywhere near the same scale.

What you want to do is dishonestly take anyone who is superfically "Christian" and who harms another person and tie their actions to their religion despite the fact that the criminal in question never sited religion as a motive. You are desperately pounding square pegs into round holes in an attempt to make a point that can't be supported legitimately.

The minority of Muslims who commit violence routinely site religion as their motive for violence acts. This doesn't happen with other religions with anywhere near the same frequency. You can't deny this without being a liar or a fool.

"Do I need to explain to you the relationship between bush, the pnacers and the billiionare Rev. Billy Graham?"

What you need to do is grow up and have the maturity to acknowledge the clear differences in numbers where it pertains to violent Christian clerics and violent Muslim clerics.

And we haven't even touched on Muslim on Muslim violence, usually against women, that is justified by religion.

This is a stilly comparison.

This is sleazy. It's obnoxious and completely unsympathetic to the plight of those living in the warzone. But basically he's saying that an existing war gives him and his annoying followers an opporunity to convert people in the warzone. So he's delusional too.

He's definitely indicating God supports violence too. But he's not telling anyone it is a religious duty to kill non-Christians. Because if he did and one of his followers killed someone, he would be locked up rather than praised as a prophet.

i suggest sending some of these armchair samurai pastor cocksuckers to the front lines.

Haha. Mindless hate mongering is overflowing in this thread.

Just cause you or others say Islam allows and advocates violence doesn't make it so. If you think just spewing hate will one day make yyour vitriole true, I pity you.

I have read nothing in the Koran that advocates violence other than in self defence.

Yes there are a lot of misguided and ignorant Muslims who think it does. That doesn't mean they are correct either.

Its one thing to be supportive of the reasons behind an act of terrorism, but another thing entirely to endorse the tactics of terrorism. Which does your post qualify as?

What you really can't deny is that the book they use to justify their behavior isn't as replete with passages advocating violence as that which Christians use. Murder is in the heart, not on the page.

terror = against power

Meaningless? I guess so unless you or a loved one is maimed or die in a wonton terrorist act. Then, it has meaning at the most basic level. Words are easy to spew - until things become Up Close And Personal.

"Meaningless? I guess so unless you or a loved one is maimed or die in a wonton terrorist act."

"Wonton". lol. You read too many Chinese comic books.

In any event, what are the odds? 6,700 Americans die every day. You frightened pussies ought to use some of your duct tape on your mouths.

"...all-justifying term to allow the U.S. Government carte blanche to do whatever it wants to Muslims..."

NOT TRUE!!! Muslims are merely collateral damage in the Corpo/Fascist US Govt's ongoing conquest of Oil & Opium riches in Iraq and Afghanistan (soon to include Yemen and Iran). So TERRORISM (orchestrated and facilitated by the US Govt & Israel) is the main (contrived & manufactured) justification for these Oil & Opium Wars and also for the "fleecing" of the American taxpayers! Terrorism is definitely not meaningless to its US Govt & Zionist "manipulators & perpitrators" in fact its implementation by them has turned fictional fear into huge mountains of gold!!!

"Wonton terrorism"...

Slapped around with egg roll wrappers? Water boarded with soy sauce? Fresh ginger stuck up the nose?

"Just cause you or others say Islam allows and advocates violence doesn't make it so."

Muslims who commit violent acts routinely justify their actions using Islam.

I'm not saying it. They are. It isn't hate speech for me to point it out. It's a statement of fact.

I'm not talking about all Muslims. But in the present tense, Islam is used to justify violence more than any other religion and by a huge margin. This is undeniable to anyone who pays attention to the world.

The term now has virtually nothing to do with the act itself and everything to do with the identity of the actor, especially his or her religious identity. It has really come to mean: "a Muslim who fights against or even expresses hostility towards the United States, Israel and their allies." That's why all of this confusion and doubt arose yesterday over whether a person who perpetrated a classic act of Terrorism should, in fact, be called a Terrorist: he's not a Muslim and isn't acting on behalf of standard Muslim grievances against the U.S. or Israel, and thus does not fit the "definition."

Bingo, Mr. Greenwald. Forget the Miriam-Webster dictionary. "Terrorist" is the operative word programmed into the majority's gelatinous brains to manufacture consent to kill the boogeyman of the day. Thus, we have to be very selective about who we call that name, as not to dilute the full effect of the mind control...

I have read nothing in the Koran that advocates violence other than in self defence.

Both books are very violent.

The Quran is twice as violent as the Bible by volume.

But, I agree that nowhere in the Koran does it directs Muslims to kill Jews or Christians except in self defense.

However, Interestingly, Christians are told to kill nonbelievers over and over:

a few examples:

You must kill those who worship another god. Exodus 22:20

Kill any friends or family that worship a god that is different than your own. Deuteronomy 13:6-10

Kill all the inhabitants of any city where you find people that worship differently than you. Deuteronomy 13:12-16

Kill everyone who has religious views that are different than your own. Deuteronomy 17:2-7

Kill anyone who refuses to listen to a priest. Deuteronomy 17:12-13

Kill any false prophets. Deuteronomy 18:20

Any city that doesn't receive the followers of Jesus will be destroyed in a manner even more savage than that of Sodom and Gomorrah. Mark 6:11

Jude reminds us that God destroys those who don't believe in him. Jude 5

I think if you want a peaceful religion ya gotta go for Buddhism. Do know of any wars or suicide bombings done by Buddhists?

Stack's worldview contained elements of the tea party's anti-government anger

He also ranted against big companies. How is that 'tea party'? He was a loon with no ties to either of the two political parties.

"violent Christian clerics and violent Muslim clerics.

#17 | Posted by Sully"

He's clearly correct. The real bad Christians were a long time ago, and while they should have been wiped out at the time they are ok now. On the other hand the real bad Muslims are right now and should be wiped out now. However it begs the question whether the Chrisitians might turn real bad again, in which case preemptive action is probably necessary.

"The real bad Christians were a long time ago"

actually this is because christianity in the west has been nudered.

as it should be in the east where islam should stay in the home.

" and should be wiped out now"

really?

dude you are slow aren't you.
