According to comments by Greek Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou, beginning in January 2001 every transaction in the country above 1,500 Euros ($2,034 U.S.) involving businesses will not be considered legal if it is done in cash. "Transactions will have to be done through debit or credit cards," he said.

I always had a sneaking suspicion that L. Ron Hubbard wrote Revelations. That would explain a whole lot....

Thanks again, Goldman Sachs! When are they going to be shut down and thrown in jail?

How Goldman Sachs Helped Greece to Mask its True Debt

Look for the gift card market to explode in Greece.

That an surge in transactions at $1,499.

From 1. Jan. 2011, every transaction above 1,500 euros between natural persons and businesses, or between businesses, will not be considered legal if it is done in cash

Good luck enforcing that. Athena, grant them the wisdom to see that this policy is fucking retarded...

Ah, yes, the bible-thumping looney toons are going to weigh in on this one too. Thanks for your "insight," washboard. I know you mean well, but most people have the sense to know a 2000-year-old description of a shroom trip isn't exactly applicable today. Most people, that is...

Who in their right mind uses cash for those kind of transactions anyway?

The idea is to keep cash within the banking system to prevent runs. Keep this in mind for what could happen here.

Who in their right mind uses cash for those kind of transactions anyway?

1500 euros could be just for starters to get people used to the idea of exchange controls. It's standard MO when countries have monetary problems.

It's easy to swallow when you watch Loonie Tunes in your double-wide all day.

Greece is loosing it's sovereignty to the EU. I give the EU about another year before it goes the way of
the USSR. Who will be left standing when Europe falls? Oh what a tangled web......

Alrighty then thanks for the wisdom.

Oh and goat I use cash for everything I almost never spend that much on anything or at one time but say I were going to update my computer systems at home (which will be happening this year) and I could easily drop that much.

Oh and goat I use cash for everything

I use it for evetything < $350 or so. I seldom carry more cash than that. Oh yea, I use my CC at the gas pump for convenience.

Curious - Why use a CC for gas when a debit card works just fine?

I don't own a debit card. I've no reason to.

Look for the gift card market to explode in Greece.

Smart thing to do would be to open a gift card web site.... People could buy swipe-able phone card type cards and you would make 2%

ah... Nice.... at least it's not the cold ass north sea. I saw AXE giving you a ration of shit yesterday... He's an ass... can you Do much fishing around the rig on down time?

Nice fish there... Shrimp too....

Do much fishing around the rig on down time?

Yes. We do. Here is a pic of the second biggest tuna caught from this rig. I didn't catch it, but I helped land it.

i239.photobucket.com

I had a friend that used to work the North Sea rigs... He ran the anchor line tension systems on one. Haven't heard from him in years though, I think he moved to Scotland or Norway.

He ran the anchor line tension systems on one

The barge engineer runs the anchor winches here

Nice... I fly fish for striped bass... That's quite a fight... That tuna go on the Barby? I have Caught Albacore smalls off of long island and doll fin too on a fly rod. That shit is wild.... Nothing like that beast thought. That's an awesome fish.... Look at that Axe man was wrong too... you look like your dressed right for pulling cat-5 cable... LOL

The barge engineer runs the anchor winches here

My friend used to say they were all computerized... I guess they have to be to keep the rig level.

whats the lat and long? I want to see if I can spot it on google....

you look like your dressed right for pulling cat-5 cable

That's not me in the picture but that's what we wore then. Now it is straight coveralls -- no bibs anymore.

I guess they have to be to keep the rig level.

That is done with the ballast system, not the anchoring system. The anchors radiate about 1 mile from the rig.

My wife wants to know if there are women on the rig. She read someplace that they weren't allowed.

She likes the fish.... she said you guys should pack them in ice and sell them off to Japan to make a lot of money...

She just smacked me in the head for saying that the FedEX boat doesn't go that far.. LOL

There are women on the rig. about 10% of the people here are women.

We freeze the fish and bring it home. The freezer is almost always full of tuna and mahi mani and whoever wants it can take it home

In Greece $1500 a lot more then it is in America. We have a $5,000 limit in case you forgot. Greece has a better deal for the black market.

Why use a CC for gas when a debit card works just fine?

Credit cards have a liability limit of $50 if lost or stolen, many hold you to $0.

Debit cards have a liability limit of your bank account balance.

Debit cards have a liability limit of your bank account balance.

WHich is exactly why I don't own one. I never pay interest on the CC, so why assume the liability?

Not mine. But, I have a $0 monthly service fee minimum balance checking accounts, so maybe they're a little different. I don't know for sure.

JesusJunky, the cash limit is there to limit cheating on taxes. Greece has a VAT charge which is assessed to all transactions. Don't worry the US will also implement a VAT tax at some point, has to. Thank GW Bush for driving the deficit so high.

thats right. Don't have to say anything, when the mark comes it is time to not play the game. Digital cash system is total big brother, and if you take it you will get the plagues.

Simple proof, just watch what happens to the US when they implement it.
Everything will fall apart and there will be no recovery.
their own fault.

I bought a motorcycle cash and they never said nothing. the sellers are not polaying that game.
I bought a car cash and they just took the cash and said nothing, and smiled a lot, barter will be hot and installments at 1999 common.
big joke.
Its a free country and the laws are bad, need to put some senators into jail I think.

We live in a sea of lies, designed to transfer money from your pocket to the pockets of Wall street fraudsters who own Washington. They operate a giant Ponzi Scheme riff with special favors and fraud, at the computerized trading counters, at ratings companies, in securities marketing, and at the Treasury, Federal Reserve and SEC.

For Greece Goldman-Sachs provided currency exchanges which hid Greece's debt, then garnered commissions selling more of their bonds, then armed with inside information of the currency exchanges they executed bought Credit Default Swaps that the Bonds they sold would fail, and finally they launched a short selling attack on the bonds which includes a rumor mill. Do these practices have anything to do with the Real Estate debacle in this country? They should be facing fraud charges, instead their former CEO gives them hundreds of billions of unconditional bailout money.

What is wrong with this picture? Only a stupid idiot would conclude from these facts that the heart of the problem is that Obama is a Socialist or Communist. Even if he was its better than what we have, which is a country run by organized crime. These monster Corporations commit fraud routinely while being provided cover by bi-partisan political machinery anxious to receive more of their campaign contributions.

"beginning in January 2001 every transaction in the country above 1,500 Euros ($2,034 U.S.) involving businesses will not be considered legal if it is done in cash"

This is brilliant!

Go back 10 years in time and prevent what is going to happen.

We could spoil Clinton's self-indulgent final year, stop Bush from most of the stupidity, and prevent Obama from being elected.

The day will come when you will neither be able to buy nor sell, lest you take the mark.

You do know that Revelation is about the 1st Century persecution of Christians in Rome?

All that Rapture stuff is hogwash that started in the 19th Century, and then spread by Watchtower in the early 20th Century.

I'm not a Bible thumper and I find the parallels interesting.

In fact, I think its pretty looney to attack someone for pointing out the similarity.

January 2001? Is this thing retroactive or is this article really old? Or, is it a misprint?

For being progressives many of you sure don't understand how a trip begins and finishes.
