The unemployment rate hit 10 percent in October, and there are good reasons to believe that by 2011, 2012, even 2014, it will have declined only a little. Late last year, the average duration of unemployment surpassed six months, the first time that has happened since 1948, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking that number. As of this writing, for every open job in the U.S., six people are actively looking for work.

This is a long article but well worth the read. One thing that stuck out for me was that as the economy improves employers may chose to hire more people, but in India and China. What's there to stop that from happening? This is yet another reason why a stimulus of tax cuts would not work to drive down unemployment, in the US at least.

There can be no recovery until the massive amount of debt this country is holding is extinguished. That's going to take a lot more defaults, foreclosures, bankruptcies and unemployment than what we see now.

Will President Obama kill many of the military Keynesian jobs created by Iraq/Afghanistan? I wonder it the military as a whole will start trimming down eventually.
