This is why you have to address waiters as "monsieru" because even though they work for you, they don't feel they should submit to you as a client. This explains why American tourists report French waiters and French people in general as rude.

We all want equality, but when I am paying for something, I demand respect, and of course I return it. No sense in being a jerk to the wait staff, for instance. We may all be equal, but in a business arrangement this equality is qualified.
