Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Thursday, February 04, 2010

A Vancouver brewery has introduced Iceholes Celebration Lager in response to the recent "Don't be an Ice-Hole" campaign against Canada started by comedian Stephen Colbert. Barry Benson, co-owner of R&B Brewing, said, "We are proud syrup-sucking Canadian iceholes. In celebration of our icehole-ish behaviour we have decided to get even rather than get mad. Canadians can wreak their revenge against Stephen Colbert in a truly Canadian way and have a beer."

Spud challenges Colbert to a drinking contest at the ROO this Olympics.

/Richmond Olympic Oval
//Venue fer the speed skaters.

Already inured to the higher alcohol content of Canadian Beer Spud is aware he has a massive advantage here and thus is willing to spot Stephen 2 beers before the contest even starts.

It's only fair, eh?

Best thing about drinking contests is that there are no losers really, only winners in different states of intoxication.

Be Well.

And if lide givs you potatoes, you make frnech fires!

Canadian beer is terrible! :-)

Seriously though - the US has countless quality micro-breweries that produce seriously good, >8% alcohol beers in a variety of forms.

Yeah, Spud knows this.

Just having fun with the story.

Kinda jazzed that SC will soon be stepping foot on Spud's ole stomping grounds, in fact.

Might actually even watch the speed skaters this year.

Go Speed Racer, Go!

Be Well.

What??? Can you even name who your good brewers are?

Tater,

With my new work hours I am woefully ignorant of this year's hockey (outside of my beloved Wings having a real tough year).

How are the Canucks doing?

I ask because I truly do not know.

What??? Can you even name who your good brewers are?

Well, Spud could tell you but then Spud's hafta kill you and you nobody wants THAT to happen.

K, maybe not "nobody" but certainly the majority hold this view.

Q: Wots the difference between Moosehead in BC and Mooshead in Newfoundland?

A: In BC Moosehead is a beer. In Newfoundland it's a misdemeanor.

* bows *

More seriously, avoid anything by the major brewers ie Molsons or Labatts. Try anything by Okanogan Springs, Granville Island, Sleemans, Dead Frog, Shaftesbury, or Steamworks. Alexander Keith and Moosehead are also acceptable in a pinch.

Cheers.

Be Well.

How are the Canucks doing?

Meh, better than average but not as good as expected.

Currently sitting 34-18-2.

Beat Toronto the other day after going behind 3-0 in the first period which made Spud a very happeh tater indeed.

The Sedins are on fire and the Sedin-Burrows-Sedin line are doing good things.

Because of the soon approaching Winter Olympics the team are currently on a NHL record setting 14 game road trip so BC Place can be used fer the opening ceremonies and such.

Sorry to hear about yer Wings recent clippings.

You guys seriously need Holstrom back and healthy.

9th in the East aint bad but it aint good either.

GL with that.

Be Well.

Alexander Keith and Moosehead are also acceptable in a pinch.

Ok spud.. I'll give you that much, but as someone that runs a beer site for a living, I got to tell you that the rest on the list is missing the mark.

Check out Unibroue, Dieu Du Ciel, Microbrasserie Charlevoix, McAuslan, LAmere a Boire, and others.. If you hate the French Canadians, this list will only upset you, but this is where GOOD Canadian beer comes from.

Where are you Spud? Beer got your tongue?

Much like everything else in canada, the beer sucks.

Unibrow is all right.

The breweries that Spud listed are all from the West Coast cos it's the best coast and we make a superior product.

Since this is a thread about an event happening on the west coast the beers you mention will most likely be unavailable to the average tourist type while Spud's list will be more accessible.

Don't actually hate the French Canadians.

French Canadian chicks is teh hawt.

Poutine rawks.

A Pepsi and a Mae West with a Gitane cigarette afterwords is culture incarnate.

/K, that last one was pure snark.

Be Well.

Well if you are talking about the West Coast, then you are talking about my northern bretheren, but they don't make great beer. Sorry, they just don't. Believe me, I wish some of that Frenchy beer brewing would be passed along to the rest of you in Canada..

And if I am in the mood for a Canadian.. I go Moosehead everytime...

Kootenay mountain ale with a spliff does the trick for me, Kokanee ain't bad either.

Beer fight!

Count me in!

A Pepsi and a Mae West with a Gitane cigarette afterwords is culture incarnate.

i spent a hockey season and a half in calgary and points thereabouts. I happened to be free and single at the time, so I sampled many of the local wares and i have to agree with the talking tater toker. it's fine.

I absolutely love all of british columbia and parts of alberta. It's the only place outside the US I would like to live, but alas, the wifey hates the cold (which to her means anything north of nashville).

Except every time I look at a picture of the Athabasca glacier I remember where it was when they laid the 1992 marker.

The train we took from Toronto to Jasper might well have been a nuclear-powered electric and there's no reason we had to rent a car to see the Icefields Parkway. But you can't have the eye candy back. It's like memories of incredible, short-lived love affairs when you were young.

Do you know how you can spot someone that likes Moosehead?

The antler scars on their chest.

Ba-dum.

I also suspect that most of the better Canadian brew never makes it to the US. You can't judge Canadian beers if all you've had is Molson's any more than you can judge American beers if all you've had is Bud Light.

Speaking of bud light...

dandelion break.

Lawls! ^_^

Awwwww yeaaah! Spud just got back from one, in fact.

Spud's Colbert Beer Thread is get the greenlight at the end of the pier from the blog-god?

/Cin Cin, happy blog-bretheren (and sisteren) is the tater o' doom entering the Drudge Retort once again
stage left.

but as someone that runs a beer site for a living

What's the site if you don't mind my asking.

I also suspect that most of the better Canadian brew never makes it to the US.

Even the regulars such as Labatts and Molsen tastes better across the border.

What was painful was watching Americans buying Coors and Bud at the Beer Store.
