When I was a kid the teachers claimed I had ADD. The doctors recommended that my parents gave me coffee for breakfast. I got worse. I was either fidgeting or falling asleep. The fact of the matter I was bored stiff and much preferred day dreaming to endless math exercises which I already had mastered. The teachers finally figured it out and put me in fourth grade when I was supposed to go to third. The competition worked, and my grades went up.

These days the doctors would have given me Ritalin or something similar and missed the whole problem. Worse they might have diagnosed bi-polar disorder and it would have been lithium for the rest of my life. Anything to get a steady customer.

I believe most ADD is caused by poor teaching skills and parents who don't want to to be bothered with talking to their kids.

Autism is real but the diagnosis has (as usually is the case) been stretched in many cases--overdiagnosed. Also, agree that ADD in many cases is just a variant of normal with some extremes in behaviors (inhabits one of the tails of the bell-shaped curve) and because 2 parents often work and are stressed today it has become too easy along with complicit physicians to place these kids on medications.

Ringmaster, ADD is defined by a set of behaviors (not "caused by poor teaching skills"). However, schools and many in the teaching profession do not know how to direct these children in a way where they can be challenged, especially since their minds are unique and they're often extremely gifted. That goes for the parents, as well, who have a difficult time understanding and dealing with their "difficult child". The easy way out often are the medications.

ADD (which is a form of hyperactive disorder) is indeed real - was tested (by actual medical professionals) for it myself when I was a child. The difference between what we see now and what I went through back in the 70's is that its not clinical testing that is doing the diagnosis.

Back in the 70's I worked with severely autistic kids at a local summer camp as a volunteer. I used to take the kids boating. They could all pay attention when I got them in a boat or took the time to put them on a pony. I rarely had trouble with any of them.

The paid camp workers preferred we drugged the kids and kept them in a locked room. They fed them crap like peanut butter and jelly or hot dogs. Sugary treats was half their diet. Entertainment consisted of a coloring book. Of course they didn't respond well to paid employees. There was a tantrum every five minutes.
