Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

A small but growing number of evangelical churches that have embraced mixed martial arts a sport with a reputation for violence and blood that combines kickboxing, wrestling and other fighting styles to reach and convert young men, whose church attendance has been persistently low.

"Compassion and love we agree with all that stuff, too," said Brandon Beals, 37, the lead pastor at Canyon Creek Church outside of Seattle. "But what led me to find Christ was that Jesus was a fighter."

The paragraph at the top of the page is reproduced correctly, but key punctuation marks (dashes) were elminated so render it not quite as sensical as might otherwise be the case. Here it is with homemade dashes inserted as the proper locations:

I'm gonna punch you in the nuts....for Jesus.

Then I'm gonna put you in a double supplex with a full nelson rectum twister, so that you will know the love of God.

They should be careful with that. They could be pointing the young me to embrace eastern philosophy if they get involved with martial arts.

"But what led me to find Christ was that Jesus was a fighter."

Who Would Jesus Dropkick?

Be Well.

Yeah, I remember how Paul used to have some Roman gladiators perform to draw a crowd on Mars Hill before he debated the philosophers there.... oh, wait....

Wow.

Makes me laugh. They are thinking by promoting masculinity that they can turn hearts for Jesus. Because Jesus was soooo for violence.

I think it takes a stronger man to turn his cheek and walk away rather than hitting back. Enough said.

"Suffer the little children..."

And how!

Ahhh! The daily anti-Christian post at the Retort. I had thought it would be the story of gays protesting the Papal visit to England but the Evangelicals are the target today.

Evangelicals are the target today.

The devil is on the christians side? I knew it.

This is what Rome did before the fall: violent sports with religious blessing to distract the masses.

Free bread, too, Kanrei.

Wanton blood and violence? What's the problem here? This seems to be the first honest advertisement of christianty I've ever seen.

Perhaps they could spice up the competition with a trial by ordeal? Put the biggest guy there against the "pastor" 1-on-1, no ref. Should god see fit to save this man who claims to know god's will, he will do so. Should he not, a charlatan will get his head bashed in.

There is no way for this to go wrong. But just to be safe one of the church-goers should make a Witch Cake and feed it to a dog to be certain the Devil hasn't "consorted" with the fighters.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's time for our main event.

In this corner, out of South Boston, Massachusetts, fighting for Opus Dei, weighing in at 6"1" and 215 pounds, Father Michael "The Confessor" Delaaaaaaneeeey!

And in this corner, out of the 9th Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana fighting for Voodoo Justice, standing 6 feet tall and weighing 210 pounds, Chief Marcellus "The Nine" Jooooooonsoooon!

Gives a whole new meaning to "Bible-beating".

You can have your Gideon's, pipsqueak.
I'll take my "Strong's Exhaustive Concordance", and you're toast.

Lots of Preacher curls in order to prepare for battle.

Physical and spiritual training at the same time! now for a new low price...

I imagine they don't allow submission holds. Can't have anybody converting to Islam in the octagon...

Just an excuse for evangelical guys to touch each other with Jayzuzz' blessing.

Smite 'em, smote 'em, ass jawbone 'em

Odd that the "christians" are in favor of martial law, but I guess that's how they get their kicks.

Jesus went out into the community. Many churches offer programs to help meet needs in peoples' life... whether it's food, clothing, grief share, addiction recovery, etc. Our church does that. Heck, I even have a group which meets about job hunting tips. All these things are in addition to preaching the Word from the pulpit. These activities aren't a substitute for preaching, they complement it.

You go out and meet people where they are. As you build rapport the whole "pew" and "congregation" thing can happen later. But unless or until you make an effort to reach the unchurhed, you're mistaken if you think they're just gonna knock down the doors to get inside.

"Nondenominational evangelical churches have a long history of using popular culture rock music"

That's odd. I've seen several churches do this, and none of them are non-denominational. Make a joyful noise!

Make a joyful noise!

Practically all "Christian Rock" I've heard blows donkey nuts... all they do is play the same few chords in 4/4 and attempt to mask an complete lack of talent with sappy lyrics. Rock and roll minus the sex and drugs. Where's the fun in that?

Seriously, though... where is the Christian prog/psychedelic rock? That would get people into a church.

Well, Zombie, there IS Rick Wakeman....

Yes concerts were a real treat back in the day of "Roundabout" and "Close To The Edge".

THETOM

You're aw-ite. Really enjoy your posts

Well, Zombie, there IS Rick Wakeman....

Rick Wakeman was awesome when he was with Yes, (saw him twice with Yes) but I wasn't too impressed with his solo stuff. My best friend, OTOH loved his stuff. I hated making road trips with him because he would play Journey to the Center of the Earth over and over. I still want to puke whenever I hear Hall of the Mountain King -- no matter who does it.

I prefer Spiritual Rock like Creed.
