Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Russia urged China to dump its Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bonds in 2008 in a bid to force a bailout of the largest U.S. mortgage-finance companies, former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson writes in On the Brink, his new book about the financial collapse. Russia's five-day war with U.S. ally Georgia started on Aug. 8, the same day as the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Games. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told U.S. President George W. Bush during those ceremonies that "war has started," according to Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman. "The report was deeply troubling -- heavy selling could create a sudden loss of confidence in the GSEs and shake the capital markets," Paulson wrote. "I waited till I was back home and in a secure environment to inform the president."

I personally feel this man has a lot to answer for.

Since when did anyone pay attention to what Pat Paulson has to say about economic matters?

So the fact that Russia dumped 65.6 billion in Fannie and Freddie because we opposed them with their war with Georgia isn't important.

That our economic bucket was kicked over because on a seaport on the Black Sea? Yes, although I shouldn't be. I guess I'm surprised it's not all over the news. I know I'm not the only one who's put it together. And if this is the case, you can lay it at the feet of GW Bush.

Just another example of why being a debtor nation is a bad situation to be in. I guess the "deficits don't matter" crew can keep repeating it over and over.

When a business or nation owes money you are at the mercy of whoever holds your notes.

Just wait till the day China tires of buying our worthless junk debt, then we will be really fucked.

The fact that Fannie and Freddie exist at all, after 12 years of Republican domination of the Congress, is a national disgrace. That the taxpayer should be on the hook for private debts, and for the group of total retards running those two agencies, is reprehensible.

Shut them down, now.

Rightisright-
re: ...after 12 years of Republican domination of the Congress...

Okay, so what you said and in that time the debt has doubled and we had an economic meltdown that threatened global depression, and you will vote Republican again and again and again...

I didn't vote Republican last time. And if you think I'm going to vote for any of these douchebag Democrats, you've got another thought coming.

You will, though. Won't you. If you lived in Barney Frank's district, would you vote to re-elect him?

If you lived in Barney Frank's district, would you vote for him? Or for someone else?

Nope.

"Shut them down, now."

Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!
Shut them down without any way of predicting the effect on the overall economy???
To put it simply, you are out of your mind.

Shut them down without any way of predicting the effect on the overall economy???
To put it simply, you are out of your mind.

With shysters like these running the game, how can you even suggest with a straight face what is a part of the real overall economy and what isn't? Isn't it about time we find out?

You do realize that the US govt is going to back infinite Fanny and Freddie losses through 2010, right? At what point should these criminals be made responsible for anything?

To put it simply, you are out of your mind.

Your president just submitted a budget that has $1,400,000,000,000 in deficit spending, and in no year in the next ten will the deficit be below one trillion dollars.

Excuse me, but you guys are out of your minds. I think you're a very selfish person, Danni, to want Washington to borrow money for the next hundred years, just so you and your selfish generation can keep a sliver of equity in your home. I'm sure you justify it somehow. I just wonder how.

Danni, let me ask you, since every other libbie doesn't seem to want to answer: if you lived in Barney Frank's district, would you vote for him?

Paulson should be in prison. That bailout was nothing but a huge felony.

If congressman Frank lived in my district, of course I would vote for him.
He's well spoken, handsome & openly gay - what's not to like? LOL

Be Well.

To put it simply, you are out of your mind.

Why danni are they too big to fail?

Same with GM and Chrysler, are they too big to fail too? If so WHY?????

Paulson should be in prison!

And when did Russia sell their 65 Billion of F&F in 2008???

The Georgia skirmish was in August of 2008.

The meltdown was September 18, 2008...

Just fact checking Paulson's claim in his book.?

If they owned the bonds they were totally within their rights to sell them. I am uncertain though.... if they are talking about MBS or their straight agency bond debt.

The US STIFFED all the pfd shareholders, but backed the rest of their agency corp debt and their MBS's....Many state pension funds took a severe pounding.

And all this time the marxists tried to convince us it was G.W. Bush's fault. What's with you commies, your right hand brothers in russia does'nt know what the left hand bro in the U.S. is doing?

Tutamen Deus

That is a situation you are in when you owe everyone money. What is to say China won't do the same.

We have been digging that hole since 1961. It ain't just Bush's fault you dickweed.

"It ain't just Bush's fault"

You're right. But Bush, unlike his predecessor or his successor, had an opportunity to do something about it. Instead, we got a war of choice and tax cuts aimed squarely at the wealthiest.

Like what Obama is continueing?? lol

Of course Obama will just surrender to China..or bow--whichever..

why won't any liberals answer RisR question? would you vote for Barney Frank?

"would you vote for Barney Frank?"

It depends. Who's running against him? If it's Michelle Bachman on the opposing ticket, then yes.

even though he has clearly "stuffed" the pockets of the banks? I am no defender of Michelle Bachman but, then again she could not run for Barney Frank's seat?

When you borrow from a loan shark, don't cry when you get your legs broke and your fingers cut off.

it's hard to believe that Bachman and Franken are from the same state!

Franken is not 'really' from Minnesota.

And with all the vote cheating that went on --he shouldn't have won.

"Franken is not 'really' from Minnesota."

Franken grew up in St. Louis Park, a suburb near Minneapolis.

Thanks for reminding us you're a moron, Murphy.

It seems that the B Frank question scared everyone off!

"It seems that the B Frank question scared everyone off!"

It seems DaveJG can't seem to read post #28.

then...yes you would vote for him!

"then...yes you would vote for him!"

Great job of totally missing the point!

Personally, I'll vote for whomever the best candidate is. Asking if I'd vote for or against Barney Frank, without telling me who is running against him, is foolish.

OK, B Frank v. Jesus, Who would you vote for?

Jesus would never run for political office. He didn't in His lifetime.

"B Frank v. Jesus, Who would you vote for?"

The real Jesus, or the Republican Jesus?

True, but His activism and civil disobedience did seem to elevate Him to a position of leadership.

Jesus would never run for political office. He didn't in His lifetime.

He was not a Roman citizen

Neither did he choose to become a Pharisee or Sadducee, both political/religious positions held by Jews who worked in concert with the Romans.

You don't choose to become a Pharisee. Gos chooses you.

"Your president just submitted a budget that has $1,400,000,000,000 in deficit spending, and in no year in the next ten will the deficit be below one trillion dollars."

About 10% of that budget could have been effected by decisions of the Obama administration, your disengenuous fiscal responsiblity, so recently discovered doesn't fool anyone.

"Danni, let me ask you, since every other libbie doesn't seem to want to answer: if you lived in Barney Frank's district, would you vote for him?"

Damn right I would.

Fact Check

Idiot Saakaashvili launched an unprovoked attack on a small township, killing Russian troops and Russian speaking civilians caught offguard. It is inconcievable that this was done without consulting BushCo. Russia quickly responded with overwhelming force.

Paulson is one of the architects of our economie's planned demolition. There is no reason to take anything he says at face value. He spent last week double talking in front of the Senate, which was conveniently overshadowed by Obama's State of the Union. He is part of the CEO aristocracy which is profiting handsomely by demolishing US jobs and driving all US workers deeply into debt. Russia saw the writing on the wall, no surprise, really, given that Rubinomics left the average Russian living on turnips.

Paulson and those who aided in bailout/theft of the US citizen should be tried and sentenced accordingly.

Paulson is passing the buck (pardon the pun) like a typical creep.

Gentiles do not have control of their currency.

That's what I thought.

Do me a favor, and quit pretending to give a damn about deficits, when you would gladly vote to send back to Washington the one fat faggot responsible for $3 trillion worth.

That POS was famously clueless about what two of his gay live-in boyfriends were doing in his own house. As Chairman of the House financial affairs committee, he's responsible for oversight of Wall Street banks. A totally, incompetent failure at both, but Danforth wants to know who would be running against him before deciding.

We all know better. He's a democrat, and that's all you have to know.

"you would gladly vote to send back to Washington"

No, dumbshit, I just wouldn't vote before knowing the entire slate. Sound familiar?

"Danforth wants to know who would be running against him before deciding."

Only because the prior Republican administration gave me the worst governance I've ever experienced. Don't blame me if The Party of Responsibility can't field a better candidate. Are you putting up Michele Bachman? I'm voting for Frank. Are you putting up Jack Danforth? I'm voting JD. Sorry if you can't tell the difference.

"That POS was famously clueless about what two of his gay live-in boyfriends were doing in his own house."

Not to get pejorative, but he isn't the only person who didn't know everything that was going on "in his own house".

Umm. Sure. I mean, you hear all the time about a guy with gay live-in lover who is using his Washington townhouse as a brothel. Or that his recent boyfriend is a drug addict. No idea.

By all means, that's the kind of person we should have overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. What could go wrong?

I don't know who Michelle Bachman is. But it's hard to imagine she could do a worse job than that POS.

"I don't know who Michelle Bachman is"

You're joking, right?

"But it's hard to imagine she could do a worse job than that POS."

Oh...you're not joking. You really don't know who she is....

"Sure. I mean, you hear all the time about a guy with gay live-in lover who is using his Washington townhouse as a brothel."

No, I mean he wouldn't be the first person who didn't immediately know everything that was going on under his roof. Present company included.

Speaking of not knowing what was going on under his own roof.

Okay, I just googled Michelle Bachman. She's that rep from Minnesota.

So you're saying that if Michelle Bachman moved from Minnesota, changed her residency to MA, and ran against Bawney Fwank, you would vote for Fwank. I see.

I just assumed you were talking about somebody who could actually run against him. Whatever. Still hard to imagine that she's so completely stupid that she would have pissed away $3 trillion. But maybe you're right. Go Bawney! Danniforth is behind you! In a way, I mean.

"So you're saying that if Michelle Bachman moved from Minnesota, changed her residency to MA, and ran against Bawney Fwank, you would vote for Fwank."

Yes, I would. And I would hope any person with a cogent thought in their heads would do the same.

"Go Bawney! Danniforth is behind you!"

No, I'm not, and you're an asshole for making that equivalency. You've either missed, or chosen to ignore the salient point: are you running MB, or JD?

I realize you'd love to pretend I'd close my eyes and vote for the guy with the (D) after his name, but I've never done it yet, why should I start now?

We are beginning to sound like a specific gender. It's never our fault.

"Do me a favor, and quit pretending to give a damn about deficits, when you would gladly vote to send back to Washington the one fat faggot responsible for $3 trillion worth."

Your hate speech disqualifies you from rational discussion. When you can't win with ideas just resort to insults. What a joke you are.

The joke is on your grandkids Danni.

How much money do you have to piss away to wrestle the "King of Pork" title from Byrd? Godalmighty. And BTW---if a guy wants to have his gayness define him, how is it an insult to refer to him in that way?

Whatever. Good thing for you there are plenty of Dannis in his District who will vote for him because they think they're being open-minded. Too bad for the rest of the country, though.

Your share of his Fannie Mae debacle is $10,000, and climbing. And $10,000 for each person you pretend to care about. Tack on the other Wall Street bailouts, it's another $3,000. Each. But yeah--when I say it should stop, I "can't win with ideas."

You're despicable. You would rather this go on for years and years and years, just because he's a Democrat. Unbelievable.

Franken grew up in St. Louis Park, a suburb near Minneapolis.

Where did little o grow up? Wasn't that NOT in the US?

RisR still pretending Democrats were in charge when the bubble was created. Pretends minority members of committees make laws. Talking point after talking point won't change the FACT that it has been primarily Republicans who created all the debt my grandchildren will have to repay, Presidents Reagan and Bush with their tax cuts have virtually bankrupted our government. Spin it like a top but it won't change the facts liar.

dan, revenues wen up after the tax cuts you bitch about. Sad part is spending also went up and you forget that little FACT.

I got a $69.00 a month raise so I can spend $169.00 a week more. Do you know who sets the REAL budget for the US? Hint, it ain't the pres, he just proposes one. You realy need to read the constitution and study history. Listening to mathews on TV doesn't cut it.

Bernanke refused to enforce the most basic "common sense" regulation, that loan applicants be able to prove that they have the ability to repay their mortgages. No wonder Bair's testimony appears nowhere in the mainstream media; it provides concrete evidence of the Fed's culpability.

But, why? Why would Bernanke refuse to act even though he could see that markets would plummet and millions would lose their homes in foreclosure?

William Seidman, the former head of the FDIC, figured it out back in 1993 when he was cleaning up after the S&L crisis. He said: "Instruct regulators to look for the newest fad in the industry and examine it with great care. The next mistake will be a new way to make a loan that will not be repaid."

That's it in a nutshell. The banks didn't care if the loans were repaid because they got their money "up front" on volume originations. That's why they were so eager to issue mortgages to people with no income, no collateral, no job, and a bad credit history. It was all a gigantic skimming operation, where banks and brokers got their cut and then bailed out before the whole thing blew up. Bair's testimony shows that the Fed knew what was going on; knew that the loans were garbage, knew that people were being victimized, knew that eventually the bubble would burst and the economy would go into a long-term nosedive.

Bernanke's job was simple; just look the other way while fatcat banksters steal as much as possible.
Don't believe me? Read Bair's testimony.

Excerpted from Mike Whitney

"dan, revenues wen up after the tax cuts you bitch about."

Not once you factor for inflation, which every Econ 101 student must learn if they hope to pass their midterm. Anyone pointing to the Bush tax cuts as proof "tax cuts increase revenue" is a moron.

And Bernanke just got confirmed for another 4 years.

THAT is what's really wrong with American politics.

I don't recall stating that I'd vote for or against Frank. Don't assign positions that don't exist. For what it's worth, I said I'd even vote Obama if Palin is the nominee in '12. (something that would pain me deeply)

But you make exactly my point. The "Damn right I would [vote for Frank]" came without any information on who was running against him. Partisanship makes people keep voting in the same crooks as long as they have the right letter after their name.

"Don't assign positions that don't exist."

My bad. Apologies.

No worries.

I did not know Franks and Dodd were Russian!

The Russians had about as much to do the "controlled implosion" of the American Economy as People driving SUV's have to do with melting ice caps on Mars

If you deny the Russians quick-sold Fannie/Freddie stock to the tune of $65.6 billion, perhaps.

Paulson is whining now cos the Ruskies convinced the Chinese to sell off their FM//FM debt before the whole sub prime debacle caused a meltdown?

LOL.

Sounds like they got out just in time.

The housing bubble was more the result of corrupt corporate practises in the US and a government committed to the notion of socialized risks and privatized profits than because of a Russian promoted sell off.

Paulson was more to blame fer the economic crisis than the Russians despite the assertions in his new book out which portrays him as a victim.

Not sure who he thinks he's fooling with that stuff.

Be Well.

I wonder if there is anyone with connections at a high level in Russia and is also well connected in Washington. I also wonder if there is a person with such connections in a position to capitalize and profit from a melt-down. Soros.

I am looking for a link to this story I heard yesterday on the NUMBER ONE NETWORK...
