Federal consumer safety regulators announced the recall Friday of Chinese-made The Princess and The Frog pendants sold at Wal-Mart because of high levels of the toxic metal cadmium -- the first time any consumer product has been recalled in the United States because of the carcinogenic metal.

Who cares?

Isn't Cadmium what makes Edward and Jacob sparkle in the sunlight?

How much longer will we put up with killing our babies and children for the almighty dollar?

First lead in their toys...

now cadmium

millions of their pets poisoned with contaminated pet food

Ain't deregulation and free trade just grand.

Uhhh... and just how many of truck loads of these things would a kid have to eat in order to be affected? That's what I thought.... More panic and running in circles by helicopter parents and the great undereducated masses that hate Walmart. Jeeze.....

Acute exposure to cadmium fumes may cause flu like symptoms including chills, fever, and muscle ache sometimes referred to as "the cadmium blues." Symptoms may resolve after a week if there is no respiratory damage. More severe exposures can cause tracheo-bronchitis, pneumonitis, and pulmonary edema. Symptoms of inflammation may start hours after the exposure and include cough, dryness and irritation of the nose and throat, headache, dizziness, weakness, fever, chills, and chest pain.

Inhaling cadmium-laden dust quickly leads to respiratory tract and kidney problems which can be fatal (often from renal failure). Ingestion of any significant amount of cadmium causes immediate poisoning and damage to the liver and the kidneys. Compounds containing cadmium are also carcinogenic.

The bones become soft (osteomalacia), lose bone mineral density (osteoporosis) and become weaker. This causes the pain in the joints and the back, and also increases the risk of fractures. In extreme cases of cadmium poisoning, mere body weight causes a fracture.

The kidneys lose their function to remove acids from the blood in proximal renal tubular dysfunction. The kidney damage inflicted by cadmium poisoning is irreversible and does not heal over time. The proximal renal tubular dysfunction creates low phosphate levels in the blood (hypophosphatemia), causing muscle weakness and sometimes coma. The dysfunction also causes gout, a form of arthritis due to the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints because of high acidity of the blood (hyperuricemia). Another side effect is increased levels of chloride in the blood (hyperchloremia). The kidneys can also shrink up to 30%.

Other patients lose their sense of smell (anosmia).

What was that about undereducated masses?

THRESHOLD LIMIT VALUE (TLV/TWA): 0.05 MG/M3 (PPM)

PERMISSIBLE EXPOSURE LIMIT (PEL): 0.2 MG/M3 (PPM)

You can think Clinton for this mess. The Clintons just love the Chinese.......

They were putting industrial waste in their own baby formula - tens of thousands of Chinese babies got sick and only a couple thousand died. The Chinese are not trustworthy businesspeople and should be handled with extreme scrutiny.

Until we can inspect 100% of their cargo we really do need to boycott all Chinese imports. Less than 1% is inspected and from what we've seen during the BushCo administration a complete handover of our well-being to these people means poisonous childrens toys, contaminated vaccines and poisoned pet food.

China is not a good partner, particularly if BushCo find them appealing!

I hope that doesn't sound racist - I mean that the business arrangements we have are allowing for seriously heinous violations of our trust and they all seem to stem from one place, repeatedly.

This makes me want to only allow my daughter to play with rag dolls and coloring books. Can I still trust Crayola?

How was Wal-Mart attacked? It's one of hundreds of retailers that would eventually stock this crap. This kind of kiddie whore-bling ends up at every place from Family Dollar to 7-11.

The telling part of the story is that you keyed in on the Wal-Mart 'connection.' Obsessive and pathetic. Completely ignorant of the world of logistics.

Though your ignorance doesn't stop you from posting.

Oooooooooo!

Wal-Mart! Wal-Mart! Wal-Mart!

Don't like Wal-Mart? Go to Target. Same stuff.

The big problem you run into is that China produces a LOT of intermediary components. I just had a DVD player die on me (made in Malaysia) but inside the parts were from China.

What about food from Indonesia or Hong Kong? Chances are they are made with Chinese ingredients.

Toys from Singapore, Korea or Vietnam? The plastic and paint may be Chinese in origin.

And so it goes on. Clothes from Haiti or the Dominican Republic: The cotton may be from Turkey or Khazakstan, but the dyes and inks are Chinese, and the fabric was printed in Madagascar.

And people are subject to the quality control -- or lack of it, from every one of these places

Trashing China on a blog may make you feel better, but the problems are much more complex

I respect the complexity, and understood that when I started trashing - you are right.

It's also true that we wouldn't necessarily know what the intermediary parts are or that they pose any form of health concern.

But after years of the same infiltration we need to consider new operational standards for Chinese imports. I don't believe we've ever had issues from Malaysia, Taiwan, or Vietnam but maybe Hong Kong since the re-acquisition.

Either way, there are toxic assets being distributed among our children and the ports and manufacturers aren't doing a good enough job inspecting.

Country of Origin labeling could help here, especially in the area of foods. Make them list all the countries for the constituent ingredients.

I'd pay more for US grown food.

Too bad the greedfucks would never let this pass.
