Wel, during the campaign he said Reagan had ideas that made an impact on America, snubbing Bill Clinton, remember that?

Stay the course is also something Bush would say.

Obama actually gave a very good speech. I especially liked his setting a date for getting out of Iraq. He disappointed me in not answering the big question: How in the hell do you pay for socialism??

"Yet despite the stinging defeat his party suffered in Massachusetts, the erosion of his own political support and calls from Republicans and moderate Democrats to change his agenda, Obama signaled that he'll make no abrupt turn from the path he set more than a year ago.

Nothing like the change that the first President George Bush made when he bowed to soaring budget deficits in 1990 and broke his "read my lips" campaign promise not to raise taxes. Nothing like Bill Clinton's move to the center after the Democrats lost Congress in 1994, when he declared in his 1996 State of the Union that "the era of big government is over."

Rather, Obama in 2010 channeled a bit of Ronald Reagan, circa 1982."

"How in the hell do you pay for socialism??"

what socialism?

public schools?

public roads?

police and firefighters?

which socialism?

I thought it was more like channeling Bubba during the early days of the Lewinski scandal.

which socialism?

Like most wing dingers he doesn't have an idea but keeps spouting it cuz it feels good to do so.

I like to call them babblerbots.

Rather, Obama in 2010 channeled a bit of Ronald Reagan, circa 1982."

That's actually a pretty good analogy.

Obama is only 1 year in. While I, and apparently most of the public, disagree with his policies, he is actually showing some backbone, and...dare I say it...ahem...leadership...by not pivotting toward center as so many would like him to. While I personally predict this decision will only accelerate his downfall, I have to give him kudos, as a leader, for sticking to his guns and continuing to push for what he believes in.

If FDR had lead by polls, we'd all be speaking German now.

And if W had, Iraq wouldn't be a sucessfull democracy.

-a sucessfull democracy

Your wife did mention something about you being, "premature".

What was your overall reaction to President Obama's speech tonight very positive, somewhat
positive, somewhat negative or very negative?

Very
positive 48%

Somewhat
positive 30%

Somewhat
negative 15%

Very
negative 6%

Jan 27, 2010 CNN Opinion Poll (5% margin)

So, most of our wingers here are 6 percenters, eh?

Cork,

One of Obama's biggest strenghts is his ability to effectively deliver a prepared speech. Nobody is disputing that; in fact even his most ardent critics grudgingly acknowledge his oratory prowess.

The problem he has is that governing and campaigning are completely different animals. So far, when he struggles with the former he reverts to the latter with predictably poor results. While I like the fact that he's in front of the camera a lot; it's almost ALWAYS under controlled-circumstances.

And 48% are still buying the lies he's selling.

Jeff

The poll is not about the ability to give a speech, the question was, "What was your overall reaction to President Obama's speech tonight?"

Which is a substantive question.

-The problem he has is that governing and campaigning are completely different animals.

GW epitomized the old saw about Repubs being able to campaign, but not govern.

Obama traveled mostly world-wide and not much at home his first year, understandable after a long campaign and lots of exposure.

But that won't be the case this year, with him already on the road bucking up his original message instead of changing it, which is what this thread article is about.

Poll: 83% of Speech Watchers Approve of Obama's State of the Union Proposals

A large majority of Americans who watched President Obama's State of the Union Address generally approve of the proposals he outlined in his speech, according to a CBS News Poll
