Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Wednesday, January 27, 2010

President Obama touted his economic recovery plans in his first State of the Union address -- and also vowed to keep fighting for health care reform and to work toward repealing the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military. "This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are," Obama said.

It's Showtime

AT THE APOLLO!

(sorry I couldn't resist)

Really have to go. Later all!

Words do not cut the budget - congress does. Words do not create jobs - private industry does. Words do not create national security - action does.

Teleprompters provide the words, Obama provides the delivery - all we need to know going into this bad sitcom tonight.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time!

I forgot the banana was still there.

I haven't heard a word of his speech yet but I'm against everything he says.

The right.

If I wanted to watch a black president on tv without a clue on how to run the country I'd watch Dennis Hasbert in the AllState commercials.

I prefer Morgan Freeman...he has freckles.

America, I inherited a real mess! For the last 8 years it's been hell. I had to fix it. I had to take vigorous action. I had to do this. I had to do that. I didn't take on this job for the polls. I didn't become president just to get re-elected. I inherited a real mess. This isn't about me!

Thank you, and God bless America!

"What you will hear the president discuss tonight, for about two-thirds of this speech are the circumstances that our economy is in, and his way forward to getting our economy moving again,"

"It's the economy, stupid"?

Makes sense.

He also needs to address the HC reforms, the two wars and Gitmo and how all that ties in.

He needs to totally nail this one.

Be Well.

Hellfighters isn't on until 8pm CST.

Black people with freckles are spooky (no pun intended).
He's an awesome actor though.

Who is the black congresswoman that camps out in the aisle seats so she can snag camera time by shaking the Presidents hand? Repub or Dem, she makes a spectacle of herself trying to mug for the camera.
Is it Shelia Jackson Lee?
Anyway, between her and the goofy clapping, I just can't tune in.

At least actors such as Morgan Freeman are far more believable than Obama. He's crapped out so far, why should we believe him now? He's given 411 speeches so far since elected, why will this one be any different? But the left will fawn and swoon the every word he says. Let's hope the Republicans treat Obama with the same respect the Democrats showed Bush.

I already can't wait for Rush tomorrow...

...that way I'll know what he said without...

...wasting the time to hear it (again) myself.

Thank God for Rush.

A true time saver if there ever was one!

"Hellfighters isn't on until 8pm CST"

I have the DVD.

Ok...lets see...per Obama we needed government spending to pull us out of the crisis. But we need to stop government spending to keep us from going massively in debt.

To do that we will cut 3% from the bloated current budget but NOT put the 500 Billion that has not been spent on the stimulas package back to the treasury.

We will spend billions more on a high speed rail system - when we have airlines with 1/2 empty planes and most rail lines virtually empty - and the one place it currently works - the NE corridor - already has a high speed train.

Does the shining lack of logic in this administration bother anyone other than me?

When you have never managed anything - never made any hard decisions (how many times did he vote "present") and have no core values to make decisions on - you get this clearly non-sensical approach to government

New drinking game (water for me please) - everytime Hussein says "I", take a drink - or a toke for you pot heads - guessing most won't make it sober through the first 5 minutes of the speech.

But the left will fawn and swoon the every word he says.

Just like partisans on the right will automatically discredit anything he has to say.

Just another example of how partisanship is tearing this country apart.

Is it Shelia Jackson Lee?

I think so.

So if the speech is really bad will the crack head from Showtime at the Apollo come out with his big hook?

If I wanted to watch a black president on tv without a clue on how to run the country I'd watch Dennis Hasbert in the AllState commercials.

Yeah Chairpunk... you are the go to man on this one.. you were right about Iraq, WMDs, Bush's ability about war, economy, Hurricane Katrina... your opinion is gold.

"I haven't heard a word of his speech yet but I'm against everything he says."

Seeing as his advisor has no answer, why should anyone believe Obama will?

MR. GREGORY: You talk about the economy. What specifically is the president prepared to do this year to create jobs?

MS. JARRETT: Well, as you mentioned, he's going to be giving his State of the Union address this week, on Wednesday, and he'll have an opportunity that he's looking forward to speak directly to the American people, something you know that he always enjoys doing. And he'll be able to set forth his priorities, and they will be focusing on the middle class. Our middle class is struggling out there. They're frustrated, they're angry, they're working hard to try to make ends meet. They're having to make terrible choices between paying their rent and putting food on the table and paying for their health care and sending their kids to college. These are the same principles that the president advocated in the course of the campaign. They're the same principles that he's carried with him throughout the course of this year. And we've taken several bold steps over the course of the year. The recovery act saved thousands and thousands of jobs. There are school teachers and firemen and, and teachers all across our country, policemen, who have jobs today because of that recovery act. We are investing in infrastructure. We're investing in public education so that our kids can compete going forth into the next generation. We're investing in renewable energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. These are all connected to the economy. And what we have to keep in mind, David, is that, is that we need to have a sustainable, healthy, long-term economy.

For government to create jobs, it has to withdraw capital from the private economy. Government is dependent on the private economy for its revenue; it can't replace it without destroying it (Soviet Union, Cuba).

The more he spends, the more he sucks capital out of the private economy. This mess was produced by the culture that permeates Washington. Only a fool could imagine they know what they are doing, or that the'll do anything meaningful.

Tonight, he'll read from a script that was composed by his pollsters. It's all smoke and mirrors.

Uh, remind me again what my opinions on Iraq, "Bush's ability about war" (whatever the fuck that means) and Hurricane Katrina were again?
I don't recall those.

As a poster I've never heard of seems to know my opinions, I'd appreciate if you'd share those with me.

If he comes out doing the Arsenio "Woof! Woof!" I'll consider it a success!

You know he's going to have 1 woman in the balcony that he can tell a Health Care story about. Of course he won't mention that she has 22 kids and is a diabetic living on twinkies.

OK, I am a self-admitted Obama supporter (one of the few remaining obviously, but I really think he is a centrist), but isn't it time to move on? Let's talk about coming together and making the country better rather than passing blame all the time.

I'll bet he's gone through half a carton of Kools today.

Kools

Blech!

Let's talk about coming together and making the country better rather than passing blame all the time.

Let's see...the last few times we've come together, we cut a blank check for scumbag bankers, locked ourselves into eternal war and fucked The Bill of Rights in the ass.

Yeah...ummm...no thanks.

"For government to create jobs, it has to withdraw capital from the private economy."

And that money ought to be used creating jobs in India and China!
Tell you what, when they stop outsourcing the jobs then the tax base will rise and perhaps we can stop borrowing, if they don't stop all the outsourcing we're just slowly swirling in the toilet as our economy is flushed.

You're dreaming. The feds are beyond all means of getting control of their debt (the $12 trillion bonded debt is a tiny fraction). If the tax base included the entire world population, it wouldn't be enough.

"I don't know what they have to say,
It makes no difference anyway,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
No matter what it is or who commenced it,
I'm against it.

Your proposition may be good,
But let's have one thing understood,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
And even when you've changed it or condensed it,
I'm against it.

I'm opposed to it,
On general principle, I'm opposed to it.

For months before my son was born,
I used to yell from night to morn,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
And I've kept yelling since I first commenced it,
I'm against it!"
- Groucho Marx in Horsefeathers

Obama doesn't even need a new speech written. Since he hasn't actually accomplished anything, he can recycle his speech from February last year (recycling is "green," right?):

"Over the next two years, this plan will save or create 3.5 million jobs. More than 90 percent of these jobs will be in the private sector, jobs rebuilding our roads and bridges, constructing wind turbines and solar panels, laying broadband and expanding mass transit,"

"Let there be no doubt: Health care reform cannot wait, it must not wait, and it will not wait another year,"

"make hard choices to bring our deficit down."

"With our friends and allies, we will forge a new and comprehensive strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan to defeat Al Qaeda and combat extremism, because I will not allow terrorists to plot against the American people from safe havens halfway around the world. We will not allow it,"

"We'll eliminate the no-bid contracts that have wasted billions in Iraq,"

"It's Showtime"

How appropriate, the most concise title I have seen on the DR.

May the force be with TOTUS.

"Good evening everyone. It's Bush's fault. Good night.

Great post. I'm very jealous.

Specifically, he will call for the elimination of capital gains taxes on small business investment and push for tax credits for both new hiring and investments in new equipment.

Seeing is believing. He can push all he wants but if the right doesn't cooperate it's a fools quest. The real power in the right wing doesn't want small business to succeed. Just ask their defacto leader Rush Limbaugh. In America these days legislation is bought and sold by big business and all the "conservatives" supporting them. They don't need capital gains taxes cut. They already cheat the system by hiring the best tax lawyers. They already made investments in new machinery in foreign countries. They are making a killing already. Competition is their enemy.

Ringmaster, that's about the most stupid post I've seen today. What a fucked up belief. Are you still sniffing that poisonous CO2? You don't have the first fucking clue as to what the "right wing" wants, your mind is far too muddled with liberal bias and manly love for your great Messiah Obama.

...that's about the most stupid post I've seen today

You can always tell a stupid left wing post because it'll contain their talking point, "de facto leader of the Republican party, Rush". I pretty much discount any true relevance to the post after that.

It cracks me up to see all the posts ridiculing the use of the word "inherited"... Speaking the truth about how we got here just KILLS you Righties, doesn't it?

You guys are like a bunch of frat boys that blames the housekeeper that is trying to clean up after your 8 year "kegger".

Everyone that pays attention at all knows you're the a-holes that thrashed the place. Sure, the housekeeper may not be "cleaning up" as effectively as we all want, but the fact remains she's STILL trying to clean up YOUR mess.

Speaking the truth about how we got here just KILLS you Righties, doesn't it?

No. I think the point is that everyone knows how we got here. Do you agree? or do you think that there might be someone out there who doesn't?

That being the case, to hear Obama state the obvious sounds more like him making an excuse than to inform the American public of a fact they may not be aware of.

Americans are sick of excuses. We know how we got here. We know that boogeyman no longer hides under our beds. Get over it and move on already. We want to see positive changes, not yet another history lesson as to how we got here

***"That being the case, to hear Obama state the obvious sounds more like him making an excuse than to inform the American public of a fact they may not be aware of."

But Goat, when there is this incredible anti-(anything)-Obama rhetoric coming from the Right, as if the last administration DIDN'T cause the difficulties we are now enduring, wouldn't it seem reasonable, and even politically necessary for him to want to set the record straight???

***"Americans are sick of excuses. We know how we got here. We know that boogeyman no longer hides under our beds. Get over it and move on already. We want to see positive changes, not yet another history lesson as to how we got here"

Americans have an attention span of about fifteen seconds and a memory about twice that long; it seems reasonable for him to feel the need to remind them...

It would be nice if, for once, everyone would withhold judgment until they have had time to hear what the President has to say, and consider it for a while before declaring an opinion.

It also would be nice if everyone did not simply parrot either rightwing or leftwing pundit talking points after the speech. Nobody should have to listen to Limbaugh/Hume or Maddow/Matthews before forming an opinion about the substance of the speech.

In short, it would be nice if for a change everyone actually thought for themselves.

Why is Hillary not attending the State of the Union tonight?
Probably planning her primary run and doesn't want to be associated with this disaster.

... simply have your talking points directly downloaded into your brain each morning?

LOL You just put a mental image in my head of them sitting up in their bed motionless for a few minutes 'rebooting' after the alarm clock goes off just like my PC does after Microsoft has downloaded an OS update in the middle of the night.

#72: Valid points, but I don't recall any president blaming his predecessor for the issues he is currently dealing with. Even Nixon didn't blame Johnson for inheriting VietNam. Reagan never blamed Carter for inheriting 13.8% interest rates and inflation. Clinton didn't blame Bush for the economic problems he inherited.

Obama is breaking brand new ground with this blame-game and it makes him look weak IMO

"It would be nice if, for once, everyone would withhold judgment until they have had time to hear what the President has to say, and consider it for a while before declaring an opinion."

So everyone should ignore the plethora of promises that have been broken? BTW... He has had a year to speak about jobs and the economy, instead he wasted the time talking about healthcare reform.

"LOL You just put a mental image in my head of them sitting up in their bed motionless for a few minutes 'rebooting' after the alarm clock goes off just like my PC does after Microsoft has downloaded an OS update in the middle of the night."

That would explain the BSOD look half of them walk around with.

It would be nice if, for once, everyone would withhold judgment until they have had time to hear what the President has to say, and consider it for a while before declaring an opinion.

Talk to the boss...he's the one who put the "It's Showtime" thread 5 hours before the speech.

Having some rubric by which to measure the success or failure of the speech (BEFORE it is given) might be useful. Without such rubric, a listener will probably be inclined to judge the speech based on pre-existing biases which then are customized to fit whatever it is the President actually ends up saying.

Unfortunately in this case the housekeeper decided to turn the place into a Soviet-style dormitory, then burn the whole fucking thing down, all the while blaming the fire on the previous a-holes.

Having some rubric by which to measure the success or failure of the speech (BEFORE it is given) might be useful. Without such rubric, a listener will probably be inclined to judge the speech based on pre-existing biases which then are customized to fit whatever it is the President actually ends up saying.

The "success of a speech" is for retards and political commentators. We all know he's great at saying things...he does it all the time.

I've heard plenty of speaking about transparency and accountability...then I get Crooked Timmy Geithner. Frankly, if you believe much of anything that he says, you haven't been paying attention.

Iraqi: You are wrong. Pretty much everyone, rightwing and leftwing, will be spinning after the speech, declaring it either a success or a failure. Having an objective rubric by which to measure it will help each person individually cut through all the partisan bullshit.

I heard a rumor Obama may do away with "don't ask, don't tell" for the military. If he does do that, I for one will extremely impressed and satisfied with the speech.

Once again the man will read the platitudes from the teleprompter placed in front of him. Speaking abstractly with no details in any manner what so ever. After all, that's what politicians do.

I think I'll just cheer now by the time he's finished droning along I'll be too tired. That's what getting up at 3 am'll do to you......

Anyway, here goes, yea!

All I can say is, this better be good. If he resorts to generalities or fails to address issues like jobs, the health care debacle, Geithner, etc., it's going to be very, very damaging.

Something tells me Rush has already taken Cialis in anticipation of tomorrow's GOP circle jerk.

Only 27 percent of the people blame Obama for US having gridlock, no solutions to our problems, and 43 percent blame Dems.... but, surprisingly enough, 48 percent see thru the Republican spin about how they are just innocent bystanders, and the people blame Republicans.

Obama is going to extend his hand to Republicans again tonight, and if they again refuse to accept it... slap it again instead, they'll be up to 60 percent blame by November.

Or.... maybe they'll just be voting for their Tea Party masters?

Is this deja vu??? What was the percentage of those interested in November's election that prefer a republican led House?

Seeing as Obama is finally deciding to talk about the economy, maybe the five percent who think he has talked enough about the economy will go to ten.

Make the banks pay for their bailout. Amen, brother.

#156 | POSTED BY RCADE

YAY!!! Costs passed onto their customers... who wouldn't want that!?

A fee for banks. Who does Homey think pays these fees?

Republicans are sitting down as he reports all those tax cuts. They hate tax cuts!

Haha! Reid's about to fall asleep....

Harry choked back a yawn!

What a great set-up by Obama, making Repubs sit on their hands while the Dems applaud a fee on banks.

Taxiing banks, taxing energy and everything that uses energy, taxing healthcare benefits, etc etc etc. This guy is an idiot

I was hoping to hear about health care.

He is so full of shit

YAY!!! Costs passed onto their customers... who wouldn't want that!?

How is that worse than having the U.S. taxpayers foot the bill? The banks have enough money to pay out millions in bonuses to their execs. They can pay every last dollar of the bailout that they made necessary through their incompetence and risk-taking.

Lamont is running for state assembly in the Sanford and Son episode I'm watching instead of this. Gee, Red Foxx was funny!

New jobs bill full of pork and they all stand up for that one.

New jobs bill! Yeah! Line up, Union organizers...here come federal dollars!

Jobs created or saved. So I guess since I still have a job I have Obama to thank. What an arrogant fuck

A new jobs bill!

Because the first "shovel-ready" stimulus only left us with 10% unemployment. LOL

How is that worse than having the U.S. taxpayers foot the bill?

Haven't we already footed the bill? Are we really going to get that money back in these bank fees? Will I get a check in the mail for my part of the bailout?

Or will the government just take that money, and not only will I pay for the bailout, but now the bank fees to cover what the government charged them?

If I'm getting a check then cool.

have enough money to pay out millions in bonuses to their execs

And they'll continue to do so...all the while gouging their customers a little deeper...nothing will change.

Make the banks pay for their bailout. Amen, brother.

Where was he a year ago to deal with the economy? He went full afterburner into a Marxist socialist agenda and wasted a year and trillions of dollars

This man is so full of shit. He just said he wanted to punish the banks with fines, then he just said he doesn't want to punish the banks.

Was he lying then or is he lying now? Maybe if his mouth is open and words are spewing, he is lying.

Perhaps Joe Wilson was right.

Fuck solar panels... go nuclear faggot!

This fuckin' clown is so full of shit it ain't even funny!!

Whoa ... he wants nuclear power plants?

See how gray Obama's hair has gotten since he's been in office and it's only been one year. That happens to every single President -- with all the weight and problems they have on their shoulders they age 5 years for every 1 year.

Guess that's why no woman ever really wants the job. lol

Obama looks good with the gray hair - distinguished.

I think he's been a good President so far and has made most of his decisions governing kinda from the middle -- not too far to the right or left. So far Obama seems to be trying his best to do a decent job and you can't ask more from a man than that.

As some folks would say -- he's done us proud.

"I won't settle for a second place America"

Naaah...I think he's shooting for 10th or 12th...

did obamee just say the N word?

He will never build a nuclear power plant..

That worked so well with the auto industry and teh bank industry..

Seriously someone needs to get Joe and Nancy way the fuck off camera... their acting is horrendous

Friggin' awesome, I'm pissed you got that & I didn't!!!!

So the Repubs stand up and clap for CAFTA

Sure, they would. CAFTA is the next extended version of NAFTA. Millions more American jobs go south of the border. Republicans LOVE it when that happens -- as do most corporatists.

Anyone who stands up and claps for CAFTA is a globalist -- one of those who fancy themselves as being a "citizen of the world" -- not an American citizen.

As a dem that supports Obamas social programs, I agree with you. We have different views of what is best for America, and those views will never coincide, never waver, for those who think like me, or yourself. The only rational solution is two countries. Your country would be free of socialist programs like Social Security, Affirmative Action, Welfare, Workmens Comp, Unemployment Insurance, Universal Health Care and more. No deductions from your paycheck for any of those programs. You could have McCain as your President, or Chuck Norris, or Schwarzenegger, or Romney, or Palin,or Pawlenty, or anyone who is not a liberal. You would have no liberals in your government--none in congress, nevfer a liberal President. The Supreme Court would be liveral free, and you would have the same Constitution as the other America. You could even call yourself the Confederate States of America.

Other than that, you should resign yourslef to the future socialism of America, which is what the majority of those living in this country want. The majority wants the social programs I listed, and the majority wants Universal Health care---especially Single Payer, and it will be Single Payer in time. Those are the options.

With all the hate I see coming from YOU and your kind for our President and America, I see no other alternative. You will always hate libs---why not man up and get your own country and STFU? Why are you and your kind sticking around here and fucking this country up? You have your vision of the future, and liberals have theirs---the two concepts will never agree---let's split before the bloodshed starts again. The Civil War never ended. You and your kind are insurgents---domestic terrorists without the bombs. The bombs will be coming soon, and you'll probably help build them.

He is not prosecuting Black Panthers

Guinea? Is he ripping on the WOPS?

Alito was the Supreme who scowled and muttered after Obama criticized the Citizens United decision.

Other than that, you should resign yourslef to the future socialism of America, which is what the majority of those living in this country want. The majority wants the social programs I listed, and the majority wants Universal Health care---especially Single Payer, and it will be Single Payer in time. Those are the options.

Buffalo Boob is a fucking moron, spending the last decade in a drug induced coma he dreamed it therefor it is true to him, cant argue with him he is a fucking retard.

I know. We need to end them both. Waste of money. Waste of lives. There's nothing we can accomplish there in the next two years we didn't accomplish in the last seven.

The Afghanis don't want our way of life. 7 years, like you said. If they wanted religious freedom, tolerance and a free open government and society they'd have it by now. Just bring everyone home and dump that money into homeland security.

You are pathetic--but that's besides the point.

Go argue with someone else..

Boo Obama on strengthening hate crimes. Prosecute crimes based on the acts committed, not on whether the victims belonged to a specially protected class.

Wow, those high level soldiers don't look happy

More platitudes....

Thanks Rcade.

BTW, has anyone noticed that Nancy seems to wear the same outfit and has that same expression on her face when she wears it. Do you think she is wearing a dildo under that outfit to keep her eyes open?

Oh yeah, just what we need: Amnesty for illegals so they can vote for Democrats. Just what we need, more uneducated, poor people looking for a handout.

And, what does this man know about American values!

What a phoney bastard.

ok, lets see at least 60 promises he made...... what a joke.

That's it? That speech is supposed to create jobs and help the economy?

WhooHoo! It's over!

Thank God, Its over, he's stopped talking (Is that still allowed in America?)

Bob I agree, Murphy is full of hate and rage. I assume it stems from her life being such a failure. When she realized she would be a loser until the day she died she lost it mentally. Murphy now attempts to drag everyone down to her pitiful level. Thankfully she won't succeed. Everyone has become wise to her mental defect.

Incongruent

I changed my mind about hate crimes this year. One of my Democratic friends has been working on me for a long time. I think they make things worse, and just provide a chance for prosecutors to increase their profile and juice up sentencing. I don't think they further justice.

Hey--if gays follow the rules like the other soldiers and want to kill the enemy--I am ok with it..

27th of Jan?

It's my birthday!

Can't agree, Blog-God. If a gay man is beaten up during a mugging for his watch and wallet, that's one kind of crime - profit is the motive. If the same guy is beaten up coming out of a gay bar because he's gay, it's another kind of crime - making him feel bad about himself and a lesser human being than others is the motive. It's a different crime.

Revenues are falling fast on the state and local level. God can't stop the mass layoffs to come.

IS he a Republican, or one of their Tea Party masters?

I treidd tahgt drinking game adn it was fun.....

Don't they usually have the opposite party speech in a room with no applause??

OBAMA: "Starting in 2011, we are prepared to freeze government spending for three years. Spending related to our national security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will not be affected. But all other discretionary government programs will. Like any cash-strapped family, we will work within a budget to invest in what we need and sacrifice what we don't."

THE FACTS: The anticipated savings from this proposal would amount to less than one percent of the deficit - and that's if the president can persuade Congress to go along.

www.washingtonpost.com

And yeahh.. . that black chickj is HOTT!

roflmao!! He's Quoting Scott Brown? In public?

OBAMA: "I've called for a bipartisan fiscal commission, modeled on a proposal by Republican Judd Gregg and Democrat Kent Conrad. This can't be one of those Washington gimmicks that lets us pretend we solved a problem. The commission will have to provide a specific set of solutions by a certain deadline. Yesterday, the Senate blocked a bill that would have created this commission. So I will issue an executive order that will allow us to go forward, because I refuse to pass this problem on to another generation of Americans."

THE FACTS: Any commission that Obama creates would be a weak substitute for what he really wanted - a commission created by Congress that could force lawmakers to consider unpopular remedies to reduce the debt, including curbing politically sensitive entitlements like Social Security and Medicare. That idea crashed in the Senate this week, defeated by equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans. Any commission set up by Obama alone would lack authority to force its recommendations before Congress, and would stand almost no chance of success.

OBAMA: Discussing his health care initiative, he said: "Our approach would preserve the right of Americans who have insurance to keep their doctor and their plan."

THE FACTS: The Democratic legislation now hanging in limbo on Capitol Hill aims to keep people with employer-sponsored coverage - the majority of Americans under age 65 - in the plans they already have. But Obama can't guarantee people won't see higher rates or fewer benefits in their existing plans. Because of elements such as new taxes on insurance companies, insurers could change what they offer or how much it costs. Moreover, Democrats have proposed a series of changes to the Medicare program for people 65 and older that would certainly pinch benefits enjoyed by some seniors. The Congressional Budget Office has predicted cuts for those enrolled in private Medicare Advantage plans.

At least we don't have a lot of naysayers here...

THE FACTS:

Obama would have that commission had the 7 Republican sponsors/cosponsors for the bill not voted "NO!"

53 votes. 7 would have made it 60...

That opposition response was interesting, but not very informative as to anything the GOP is willing to actually do.

And yeahh.. . that black chickj is HOTT!

#437 | Posted by ZombieHunter

I thought you woulda liked the skinhead or the Asin dude better, but, hey! It's all good...

OBAMA: The president issued a populist broadside against lobbyists, saying they have "outsized influence" over the government. He said his administration has "excluded lobbyists from policymaking jobs." He also said it's time to "require lobbyists to disclose each contact they make on behalf of a client with my administration or Congress" and "to put strict limits on the contributions that lobbyists give to candidates for federal office."

THE FACTS: Obama has limited the hiring of lobbyists for administration jobs, but the ban isn't absolute; seven waivers from the ban have been granted to White House officials alone. Getting lobbyists to report every contact they make with the federal government would be difficult at best; Congress would have to change the law, and that's unlikely to happen. And lobbyists already are subject to strict limits on political giving. Just like every other American, they're limited to giving $2,400 per election to federal candidates, with an overall ceiling of $115,500 every two years.

#12 spookann jim: Let's hope the Republicans treat Obama the same respect the Democrats showed Bush.

Sure we will, we'll paint the dumb worthless piece of shit the color he truly is, just like all you dense Democrats painted Bush...

I think its time to lean the fonts of "Drudge Retort" the other way. This place is lost.

Great speech..... can't think of a pol in the other party that could have done as well.

Good for you.

Nobody's buying any of his shit.

2 weeks he'll be down about 3-4 more points.

right now, SIX times as many people that are watching the second place network are watching FOX.

And Juan Williams is struggling and sounding retarded as the FOX pundits destroy Obama.

Funny.

Another of the same...but, what could one expect.. he is desperate, but shallow..!!!
Nothing new here... just another 70 minutes of very much repeated rhetoric...
axelrod and gibbs are probably 'high fiving', thinking they have 'swayed' the American people into once again swallowing his rhetoric...and, you will find those dazed supporters thinking that he has made the greatest speech in time..
no real strength in any solutions...rubber stamping mostly of common knowledge..!!!

He holds so true of the old story of the rancher talking about a 'post turtle'..(picture a small fence post, with a large turtle sitting on it with no way to gain footing)..

The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle'.

'You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, and he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with'

The sheer LENGTH of this catastrophe of a speech ( 70 mins) and the way he went ON and ON about "me" and "I" .... in a sophomoric defensive response to the pure disdain that America has for him is the lowest point yet in the putrid train wreck that is this embarassing Presidency.

It is soooo cool to watch Obama read in HD wide screen TV. AWESOME!!!!! You get an excellent view of both teleprompters and can see his eyes move as he reads. My hero!

In the body of law makers tonight I didn't see a lot of hope but resignation---I feel even amongst democrats the feeling of zest has disappeared---eery feeling.

Corky obviously has the intellect of a 5 year old, but is probably just an old man sitting in his basement in his skivvies.

Corky: Why don't you come up with a cogent thought instead of indulging in your so-called potty humor that is meant to put people down and just makes you look foolish and intellectually deficient.

After tonight, we're going to do something about earmarks.

agreed Mary. i will give that there is balance... as always... in all things justice.

just as jurors may use their consciences and may consider and punish for such, the people's legislators may also legislate similarly.

therein, between the conscience of one peer and the law, one might glimpse where balance is always mandated. one [should] checks the other, both valid.

You've obviously never watched a SOTU speech or any other Presidential speech for that matter. They've all used teleprompters.

What else ya got?

THIS PRESIDENT had to use a teleprompter with 6 year olds! What a tool.

Justice Alito will be the next Joe Wilson---they have him on camera mouthing "not true" when Obama was talking about the recent supreme court decision--in fact the cold response of all court members was palpable.

It'll be interesting when the pundits parse Alito's response to what Obama said---he evidently disagreed with something he said and if it was communicated poorly it's one thing but if Obama said something notably false then I feel Alito knows what he was talking about--it'll only destroy Obama's credibility more then it is already destroyed.

Interesting Matsop, but considering Obama was a con law prof, and law review editor at Harvard and Magne Cum Laude graduate would he not know law at least as well and likely better than Alito?

Hmmmm?

It'll be interesting when the pundits parse Alito's response to what Obama said---

President Wrong on Citizens United Case [Bradley A. Smith]

Tonight the president engaged in demogoguery of the worst kind, when he claimed that last week's Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC, "open[ed] the floodgates for special interests including foreign corporations to spend without limit in our elections. Well I don't think American elections should be bankrolled by America's most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities."

The president's statement is false.

The Court held that 2 U.S.C. Section 441a, which prohibits all corporate political spending, is unconstitutional. Foreign nationals, specifically defined to include foreign corporations, are prohibiting from making "a contribution or donation of money or ather thing of value, or to make an express or implied promise to make a contribution or donation, in connection with a Federal, State or local election" under 2 U.S.C. Section 441e, which was not at issue in the case. Foreign corporations are also prohibited, under 2 U.S.C. 441e, from making any contribution or donation to any committee of any political party, and they prohibited from making any "expenditure, independent expenditure, or disbursement for an electioneering communication... ."

This is either blithering ignorance of the law, or demogoguery of the worst kind.

Bradley A. Smith is Josiah H. Blackmore II/Shirley M. Nault Designated Professor of Law at Capital University Law School

Interesting Matsop, but considering Obama was a con law prof, and law review editor at Harvard and Magne Cum Laude graduate would he not know law at least as well and likely better than Alito?

Hmmmm?

NO---see #474---Hmmmmmmmm?

By the way, Obama essentially sat on his rearend as law review editor and had no notable reviews by himself.

Also, as far as known at this point in time, Obama as law review editor didn't produce any research, law reviews, or articles----maybe he was too busy giving speeches.---Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

That's supposed to be the standard SCOTUS behavior at the SOTU: impartial. Figures alito would fuck it up.

"This is either blithering ignorance of the law, or demogoguery of the worst kind.

Bradley A. Smith is Josiah H. Blackmore II/Shirley M. Nault Designated Professor of Law at Capital University Law School"

I dunno anything about any Capital University School of Law and will have to go with the Magna Cum Laude grad of Harvard till more convincing proof comes in.

Got any?

Obama was a con law prof, and law review editor at Harvard

Obama was a "lecturer", not a professor. Professors are scholars, and scholars produce works of scholarship.

There's no evidence of Obama having done so.

The "law review" bullshit is a popularity contest.

In time, one of the greater scandals of history will be how the popular culture allowed someone so atrociously unqualified to acquire the office he did.

re: The "law review" bullshit is a popularity contest.

Evidently one you didn't win. Did you at least find a nice position in your fraternity? Tapper of the keg, or something... (did you get a special hat?)

I dunno anything about any Capital University School of Law

Seems to me that's your problem.

Your "magna cum laude" didn't tell the truth.

Given the facts, that's shouldn't be a particularly contentious assertion.

But I guess, in your case, looking like a dumbshit is the price one has to pay for being a sycophant.

"Interesting Matsop, but considering Obama was a con law prof, and law review editor at Harvard and Magne Cum Laude graduate would he not know law at least as well and likely better than Alito? "

In short, no. A con law professor is nothing, anyone one can teach that course, it's nothing more than opinion. He was one of 85-90 "editors" of the law review. And what has Obama done in real world law other than advise ACORN? Alito was educated at Princeton University and Yale Law School, served as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey and was a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit prior to joining the Supreme Court. He previously argued cases before the Supreme Court. Alito is one justice of 5 which made the decision after seeing all evidence and hearing all the testimony and argument. Obama is nothing more than a law school graduate with community organizing and a lot of "present" votes. Interesting that the left is screaming over this decision but still revere Roe. Are they not both, being SC decisions, deserving of equal consideration?

I thought Obama's speech was very enlightening. It solidified for me, the fact that he is an empty suited, narcissist. The first half he was very conscious of his failures and then halfway through, he began to believe what his teleprompter was saying, forgot about reality, and started spewing his confident, bullshit verbage, we all know him for.

And wow! Michelle my bell is one angry bitch! Her herb garden must have died. That, or she is so pissed at the right for dissing her hubby, she is ready to kill. She's got looks to kill!

Oh, so...you were turned down in your bid for the official keg-tapper of your frat.

Another popularity contest, I'm sure.

Just like admission to Harvard, the Harvard Law Review, etc.

I can see why you are so bitter.

Jim-

I'm sure you applied and they turned you down because you were overqualified.

BetelG,

Can you point to anything scholarly that Obama produced while at law school and when he was editor of Harvard Law review?

Do you have any clue what a sentence is?

I'm sure you applied and they turned you down because you were overqualified.

Never applied to Harvard. Could have been interesting, though. Never bothered with Law Review, either, I actually had a life, and didn't feel like spending my days examining citations of other people's work. Yes, that's all that law review is, looking at real lawyer's work, not doing anything on your own. Not the big resume bling that so many believe. Editor is a bit better, but one of 90? Looks like Harvard likes to prop up their students a bit.

Jim-

re: Never applied to Harvard. Could have been interesting, though.

I'm sure the thin reply would have been quite interesting.

What do you mean by "one of 90"?

What do you mean by "one of 90"?

I think he was referring to the number of editors Harvard has had in totality.

Do you have any clue what a sentence is?

Did I over-use the comma? Damn! I wasn't sure where to put them all. I'm glad grammar checking liberals like you are around to correct us hard working folks. Did I spell everthing okay?

Thank you, JeffJ.

And he was eliding the fact that Obama was in charge of the other ninety (eighty, in fact)

Where do you suppose Jim was given his risible talking points?

Beachbuzz-
Work harder.

If his "talking points" are so risible, you could actually refute them in a substantive manner.

I know, I know - crazy talk.

What do you mean by "one of 90"? - I think he was referring to the number of editors Harvard has had in totality.

Correct. While most law schools have a few, for some reason Harvard needs 85-90 editors at a time. The Harvard Law Review has some reasonable recognition in the law world, but it's not really known for anything in particular. I'm not sure I ever used an article from Harvard for any of my papers, motions, etc. Interesting note I had forgotten, one of my Con Law Profs was a Harvard Grad. She was run out of the school on a rail. So much for that.

BetelG,

I recognize you are going back and forth with 5 different people simultaneously (which is no easy task), so I am going to re-print a question I asked above.

BetelG,

I stated it quite clearly.

President of the Harvard Law Review: not based on academics, but on what goes on inside the club. Cling to that if you wish, Betelg, doesn't account for much. But at this point, anything will probably help.

Jim-
re: I'm not sure I ever used an article from Harvard for any of my papers, motions, etc.

I don't doubt that for a moment.

I stated it quite clearly.

I missed it.

Sorry.

I recognize you are going back and forth with 5 different people simultaneously (which is no easy task), so I am going to re-print a question I asked above.

And when you are through with that one, boy(d), please tell us why we should mask the details of a procedure that is no more significant than clipping our toenails? I'm talking about abortion of course.

But get to jeff's inquiry first. I can wait.

Jim-

re: President of the Harvard Law Review: not based on academics, but on what goes on inside the club.

And you were never really "inside the club", were you?

I'm sorry.

I bet your momma knows your worth, though. It's just those other mean competitive kids who didn't see your brilliance...or maybe they resented you for it.

Obama's lack of academic and professional accomplishment nothwithstanding, I can't help but notice a dearth of leftist shit singing the praises of his SOTU speech.

In fact, I heard a lot of Bitch Crickets afterwards.

And so we started talking about Obama's lack of academic and professional accomplishment.

Very telling.

It's beyond comprehension to me that the rightards that fawned over every mutilated word that came out of Bush's twisted, spoiled, reprehensible mouth for 8 years now decide to hold a leader accountable. You're the reason president Cheney was able to run roughshod over this country to empower his buddies at the expense of the masses. Now you decide to act? Where the fuck were you 8 years ago? 7? 3?
It was only by sheer luck that the Bush/Cheney attempt to twist this country into a right wing, christian, theocracy failed. Your righteous indignation rings pretty hollow after the way you acted when Bush was talking his shit. I know hearing Obamas thoughtful, cogent arguments confuses you. Never fear. By tomorrow Rush, Hannity and your other gods will have it all translated and ready to be spoon fed into empty little heads.

Just sayin'

Betleg - add number 6 to your conversation list...you are kinda like a whore on New Years Eve!

You think Obama did okay tonight?

re: Obama's lack of academic and professional accomplishment nothwithstanding...

LOFL, and you voted for "W" twice (at least)!!!

ROTFLMAO!

"I bet your momma knows your worth, though. It's just those other mean competitive kids who didn't see your brilliance...or maybe they resented you for it."

Typical lib, once he runs out of arguments he just jumps into personal attacks. But keep up your support of nObama, he needs people with no brains and less common sense, everyone else sees him for the fraud he is. And frankly, I had no competition. But then again, likely neither did you, as holding up the bottom doesn't typically garner very much.

"W" was a more accomplished human being than Obama when he was elected.

The truth hurts.

So now you are relegated to Bush deflections?

Again, please tell us what academic writings Obama produced.

Revised for grammar boy...

I thought Obama's speech was very enlightening. It solidified for me, the fact that he is an empty suited, narcissist. The first half he was very conscious of his failures and then halfway through he began to believe what his teleprompter was saying. Losing grasp of reality, he then started spewing his confident, bullshit verbage we all know him for.

And wow! Michelle my bell is one angry bitch! Her herb garden must have died. That, or she is so pissed at the right for dissing her hubby, she is ready to kill. She's got looks to kill!

once he runs out of arguments he just jumps into personal attacks

Right now he's "ROTFLMAO".

Give him a minute to compose himself.

Right now he's "ROTFLMAO".

It'll take longer than that.

Should I just call you my bitch now, or do you want me to kiss you first?

"W" was a more accomplished human being than Obama when he was elected.

Yeah. He landed on that carrier, doubled the debt, handed his balls (such as they were) over to Cheney, brought the US and the world to the brink of global depression, but most of all his last name was Bush.

Hard to top that, or your support for him.

Still, ROTFLMAO

Wish I could keep this up all night, but the conservatives of the group have to get up and make a living so the liberals have something to spend. Night y'all, it's been a hoot.

Mao-
My favorite part of the Bush legacy was when he muscled through Medicare Part D without even attempting to pay for it and I didn't hear from you. Wait, maybe it was the wars that he didn't even attempt to pay for. Wait, maybe it was the lying us into Iraq. Wait, maybe it was the illegal spying powers that have now been passed on to Obama...

Mostly though, it was that you were largely silent through all of this until you lost a few elections, and only now you wet your pants.

Goodnight Jim, I'm off too.

"Obama: You liked my speech? Please send money."

"About an hour after the end of his State of the Union address, in which he called for an end to the partisan conflict that has plagued his first year in office, President Obama sent out a political fundraising appeal through his permanent campaign organization, Organizing for America.

"I just finished delivering my first State of the Union address," Obama wrote in the letter, which was headlined "I cannot do it alone." "I set out an urgent plan for restoring economic security for struggling middle class families. This is my top priority, but I cannot do it alone -- and that's why I'm writing to you now."

Obama discussed his economic proposals and also vowed not to walk away from the goal of passing a national health care bill. And then the pitch. "I need your voice. I need your passion," he concluded. "Can you help fuel our fight for the middle class with a monthly donation of $15 or more?"

Odd that you would call Police and Firemen 'douches'....but hey....that's where the 'A-hole' part of the name comes from I guess.

Poll: 83% of Speech Watchers Approve of Obama's State of the Union Proposals

I really enjoyed seeing obama give the SCOTUS, The republicans, and his own party shit where they deserved it.

SCOTUS ruling WAS terrible.
The dems have been running for the hills, like the spineless jerks they are.
And finally, using the power of obstruction gives the republicans some responsibility in its outcome. "NO" is not leadership, indeed.

GOP: Nation can't afford Democrats' policies

"WASHINGTON - The nation cannot afford the spending Democrats have enacted or the tax increases they propose,"

(THE TRUTH: The nation couldn't afford the drunken-sailor spending the Republicans actually engaged in or the tax decreases on the wealthy, a trillion dollar wars, or unfunded Medicare Part D. Now, we want to cut social programs.

SEE: "Starve the Beast", a concept conceived by David Stockman, Ronald Reagan's WH Budget Director. To wit: run up massive deficits so we can't afford anything and can point fingers at Democrats as big spenders and cut social programs while spending like drunken sailors on what WE want to")

Lines of the night:

"To Democrats, I would remind you that we still have the largest majority in decades, and the people expect us to solve problems, not run for the hills. And if the Republican leadership is going to insist that 60 votes in the Senate are required to do any business at all in this town -- a supermajority -- then the responsibility to govern is now yours as well. Just saying no to everything may be good short-term politics, but it's not leadership. We were sent here to serve our citizens, not our ambitions. So let's show the American people that we can do it together."

That sound you just heard was one of the major elements of this fall's congressional campaigns being hammered into place.

Next best line of the evening came when members of the Party of No's reaction at one point seemed to indicate they didn't know what a fiscal year is or when it begins and ends:

"That's how budgets are done."

"Budgets?
We don' need no steekin' budgets."
~Boehner, Cantor & Crew
Party of No

The SCOTUS ruling was spot-on, Alex.

Read the first Ammendment. It protects speech and makes no differentiation of speaker.

As Sniper might ask, "Where in the Constitution does it stay that corporations are people?" Oh, I know there's SCOTUS precedent for that, but the Roberts-Alito-Thomas-Scalia-
Kennedy axis has already shown what they think of precedent.

Read the first Ammendment. It protects speech and makes no differentiation of speaker.

The first Amendment applies to people. Once those on SCOTUS decided the fictitious person of a Corporations are actual "people" the premise ensured a flawed conclusion.

I find it quite humorous that the same folks on the Right that were vehement on the 2nd amendment specifically pertaining to individuals, not militias (an organized entity), appear now to offering the opinion that the first 10 amendments (The Bill of Rights) isn't about the individual, but about the Corporation.

"Read the first Ammendment. It protects speech and makes no differentiation of speaker."

Think it applied to slaves Jeff???
Thus, no it is not a right applicable to anything except people which, at the time, slaves were not considered to be.
Not surprisingly, the fifteenth amendment which granted slaves rights is what the corporatists base their ridiculously flawed argument for corporate personhood on.

er, I mean fourteenth amendment.

isn't about the individual, but about the Corporation.

Ain't it grand. Soon we'll all be working for the same five people.

Jeff, Money is just money, it is not speech. Read up on Renquist sometime.

Ted,

Prohibition of the publishing of political opinion sure as hell is the suppression of free speech.

Also, the speech that the founders were most interested in protecting was political speech.

The first Amendment applies to people.

No, it doesn't.

It applies to speech.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

It doesn't say, "or abridging the freedom of speech except for some corporations."

Roberts-Alito-Thomas-Scalia-
Kennedy axis has already shown what they think of precedent.

#528 | Posted by Doc_Sarvis

There's a huge chasm between Starre Decisis and a complete abrogation of responsible jurisprudence.

Precedents are overturned all of the time.

Hell, the New Deal overturned 150 years of judicial precedent, but I sure don't see many lefties bitching about that.

isn't about the individual, but about the Corporation.

#529 | Posted by YAV

No, it's about the text itself.

It makes no differentiation among speakers.

"Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."

Jeff, name the speaker.

Nah, not a founder. A little later.

The idea that prohibitions against corporate money pouring into political contests is a prohibition against freedom of speech is ridiculous. I'm sorry but you have to be an idiot to allow them to sell that ridiculous concept to you, it reduces the worth of a human being to that of an entity created on paper without blood or flesh that can't feel pain or shame. My father and his father before him fought for this country, many people died in those wars but I don't remember reading of any similar sacrifices made by corporations. All the SC has actually accomplished by this decision is to reduce the public's respect for that institution, they have become no better than our Congress which is bought and paid for by those same corporations who have now done the same thing to our courts.

in a nutshell, barry said, shut up i am tired of your bitching i won, i am president, i know what is best despite my failure of a first year.

regarding the supreme court, this arrogant piece ov shit pres is going after them but soros' money is ok? shut up you one term, narcissitic douche, you are a joke and you cant even hide your distate of anyone, anyone that challenges you. all that you said was lost when you, a joke of an attorney slammed the greatest legal body in the world. you are fucked in nov of 2010 and 2012. what a jackass

Ted,

Nice quote but it has nothing to do with the constituational issue at hand.

It looks like this President wants his party's ass kicked in November. Condesending POS.

The idea that prohibitions against corporate money pouring into political contests is a prohibition against freedom of speech is ridiculous.

A movie about Hillary Clinton was produced (it was funded by a corporation) and it was not allowed to air just before the primaries. That sure as hell is a prohibition of free speech. Just because you don't like the speaker doesn't give you the right to suppress their views in the eyes of our constitution.

#539 | Posted by danni

The majority opinion didn't ask "Is it right?" (name the speaker, Ted).

No, they actually did what they were supposed to do - interpret and apply the constitution.

True enough. But you claim to know what was in the hearts of the founders. Don't much think they'd be agreeing with you or this decision.

I am about to switch from Wine to Whiskey. Anyone with me?

mam up my man

Nice quote but it has nothing to do with the constituational issue at hand.

Perhaps you should review the history of the Corporation in the United States. Particularly around the time the Constitution was written. The Founders would never have stood for this SCOTUS interpretation.

With that, I'm off to visit clients. Have a good day everyone!

But you claim to know what was in the hearts of the founders. Don't much think they'd be agreeing with you or this decision.

I disagree.

When they penned the 1st Ammendment they weren't concerned with protecting one's right to burn our flag. Their biggest fear was that government would use its powers to suppress political speech which is precisely why they authored the 1st Ammendment to strip away that power from government.

The Founders would never have stood for this SCOTUS interpretation.

Perhaps you should review the history surrounding the 1st Ammendment, or just read the text itself.

that tax cut obama gave you, well he didn't lower your tax rate so you will owe the same amount of tax as before, obama will get it back when you pay your taxes.

"That sure as hell is a prohibition of free speech. Just because you don't like the speaker doesn't give you the right to suppress their views in the eyes of our constitution."

If the cowards who made it were willing to do it as individuals with the risk of being personally sued for libel and slander then I might say you have a point but since they hid behind the corporate veil which enabled them to lie with impunity I think your point of just nonsense. Corporations have no place in American politics, they will just further destroy our citizen's belief that they have any connection to their government.
I seem to remember a slogan: "of, by and for the people," I don't remember it ever being "of, by and for the corporations."

If the cowards who made it were willing to do it as individuals

They WERE doing it as individuals. They just got their funding from a corporation.

Corporations have no place in American politics,

The first ammendment says otherwise. If you don't like it then put together a petition to ammend the constitution. That's how the process works. You don't get to pick and choose which portions of the constitution you want to follow, or ignore. It doesn't work that way.

I am so glad Obama called out the obstructionists party. Fuck them all. Do everything by reconciliation and screw the party of no.

"I hope [that] we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial by strength and [to] bid defiance to the laws of our country."
~Thomas Jefferson

While I'm quoting Tom: "I place economy among the first and most important virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers.
To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt."

"If you don't like it then put together a petition to ammend the constitution."

I've already signed on with thousands of others, that movement will be growing, you'll see. IT won't be long before even you will see the error of your ways and sign right along with the rest of us.

"To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt."

Too bad Ronald Reagan didn't believe that.

"deficits don't matter."

The three most feared words in the English language.

And wow! Michelle my bell is one angry bitch! Her herb garden must have died. That, or she is so pissed at the right for dissing her hubby, she is ready to kill. She's got looks to kill!

Here's the real problem. Can you pick it out?

"LAURIE KELLMAN

Associated Press Writer= WASHINGTON (AP) The Democrat-vs.-Democrat anger roiling the ranks of Congress is being wrapped in smiles and standing ovations Wednesday as President Barack Obama outlines the nation's top priorities in his first State of the Union speech.

But for most of the Democrats cramming the House chamber, there is no issue more pressing than getting re-elected in November. And it's not clear that pursuing Obama's priorities will help them achieve theirs.

In personal and profane terms, House and Senate Democrats have huddled behind closed doors to list the debacles: The stunner in Massachusetts that cost the Democrats a Senate seat. The slow-motion collapse of health care talks. A government bailout of Wall Street while unemployment sits in double-digits."

The problem exists with both Repubs and Dems.

Answer: But for most of the Democrats (and Republicans = my insert) cramming the House chamber, there is no issue more pressing than getting re-elected in November.

Too bad that's the priority and not what is best for the country.

"that tax cut obama gave you, well he didn't lower your tax rate so you will owe the same amount of tax as before, obama will get it back when you pay your taxes."

Sorry, but I think you are wrong, that was true with the Bush stimulus but it is not true of the Obama tax cut for 95% of the American people.

If I'm wrong here then post a link to prove it, I actually checked a few articles and I believe I am correct on this.
Also I just did my taxes and found that it is true.

The New York Times is a corporation. I don't recall the liberals here pissing themselves when they endorsed Obama for president.

And didn't Obama campaign against freezes in discretionary spending?

More tax cuts, taxing the cadillac health care plans, freezing discretionary spending--is there any part of McCain's economic campaign platform that Obama hasn't adopted?

State of the Union's don't matter

Bill Clinton and George W. Bush's annual addresses combined, on average, changed their Gallup approval rating one point. The last five presidents combined averaged no change (polling was too infrequent to measure before Jimmy Carter).

Not encouraging news for Obama, then. Approval rating continues to circle the bowl.

"The New York Times is a corporation. I don't recall the liberals here pissing themselves when they endorsed Obama for president."

So's The Washington Times -- a Moonbat corporation, too -- and I don't recall any of the liberals here pissing themselves when they endorsed McCain.

How much money did the NYT give Obama? How much di the WT toss McCain's direction?

Influence? Yes. Money? No.

Apples, meet the oranges.

You must never fly because the airlines have scaled back flights so much that I haven't been on a 1/2 empty flight in years.

The reason the rail lines are empty is because of the time involved in using rail and the cost.

jak se mao,

Its obvious to the most casual observor that Corporations already have complete control of Government policy. They write the fucking laws we are being forced to live by, whether it involves your Bank, eye exam requirements to refill a prescription, health care reform... Finance, Insurance & Real Estate have swindled the productive sector of our economy through campign bribery. They just stole $13 trillion with virtually no discussion. Doesn't that bother you?

Obama didn't make his points regarding Corporate personhood accurately in every detail but it doesn't change the fact that the points he made go right to the heart of the problem with our Democracy. It was a speech made to the general public and any attempt to maintain detailed accuracy would have gone over the heads of the majority of listeners.

It was another 5/4 decision by the same five skanks that put Shrub into office against the will of the American people and let Exxon off the hook for the Valdez gross violations of law. Those five were appointed by the Bush Crime Family and should have recused themselves from the electoral sqaubble because of that obvious conflict of interest. But since they are untouchable partisan hacks they didn't.

How ironic that you consider Obama unqualified after an alchoholic, corrupt, dyslexic, black sheep of the Bush Crime Family just lost two wars, turned bankruptcy law into another subsidy for rich banks by providing them free legal services to beat up poor people with, suspended habeaus corpus and trashed our economy. Your partisan logic is profoundly flawed.

So while SCOTUS continues to deny full legal rights to minor criminals the Bush Crime Family has enjoyed immunity from law while they plotted a coup against Roosevelt, traded missiles for Iranian hostages behind the back of our elected President Carter, started an illegal war with mercenaries and private Contractors that cost more than WWII and accomplished nothing except murdering a million innocent people.

State of the Union's don't matter much.

Bill Clinton and George W. Bush's annual addresses combined, on average, changed their Gallup approval rating one point. The last five presidents combined averaged no change (polling was too infrequent to measure before Jimmy Carter).

"The New York Times is a corporation. I don't recall the liberals here pissing themselves when they endorsed Obama for president."

If the NYT says John Boehner is a child molester without any proof they can be sued and rightly so.
If Exxon sets up a shell corporation without any real assets specifically to run ads slandering politicians then who can really be sued???
Freedom of the press is not freedom without responsibility for whay you print, allowing corporations to print any disgusting, untrue, slanderous thing they want, with access to huge amounts of money, will undermine democracy as we know it and those five bastards on the court understand that as well as I do, they have a corporate agenda and should be impeached.

As I said in another thread, I hope someone with a few bucks sets up a corporation specifically to assasinate the characters of those five bastards.
Run ads claiming all five worship Satan or that they own child pornography businesses. Let those bastards feel the pain that their evil decision will inflict on politicians.

Influence? Yes. Money? No.

Apples, meet the oranges.

unless I am a media outlet, how else do I buy influence? the media can provide their own through their outlets themselves (at a huge discount)

..unless I am misunderstanding your argument.

pain that their evil decision will inflict on politicians.

Both fruits. The lesson to all us non-libtards, apparently, is that if you want "influence", buy a newspaper.

I wonder if the libbies--you know, the 26-percenters--would mind if the Chamber of Commerce bought a controlling interest in the NYT or the WaPo, and fired the liberal columnists. You know, 92% of them. And replaced them with pro-business conservatives.

I'll bet not. But it doesn't matter. Obama can't keep his head over 50%, even with overwhelming media support. That's because Americans, on the whole, are smart. And he isn't.

"You have yet in any way, shape or form formulated an argument as to how their ruling doesn't fit the constitution."

Baloney Jeff, I posted a while ago that the basis for their argument rest on the fourteenth amendment which was to give former slaves the right to vote, no where in the constitution or in the amendments is "corporations" ever mentioned and the founding fathers' views on corporations are well known and documented. These five bastards have knowingly created new rights for corporations as part of an agenda and as I posted above I hope someone uses this new right to spread filthy lies about every one of them and laughs at them as they do it.
Some people say Justice Thomas is a murdering child molester.

You know, its speeches like I heard tonight that remind me why I voted for Obama.

Yeah. Gotta protect the politicians. Bawney Fwank is probably tired of the very occasional letter to the editor back home who accuses him of being a dumbass turd in the pockets of big bankers.

Since you brought up the point, I wonder how Satan-worshippers tend to vote? I already know how the baby-killers do--Planned Parenthood are big libtard donors. Quick glance over at the Tim Tebow thread is a reminder that "pro-choice" doesn't really mean that at all. But I wonder if you took a poll of wiccans and Satanists, if you'd find a lot of conservative voters? Or a bunch of liberals?

Mao bags another one.

He's having way too much fun with this.

Danni,

Actually, they cited the 1st ammendment, which protects speech but, in the process, doesn't make any differentiation among speakers. The 1st Ammendment prevents government from prohibiting free speech and it doesn't anywhere say, "except for corporations".

No baloney at all.

You know, its speeches like I heard tonight that remind me why I voted for Obama.

Okay then...lets see...

...corporations are persons...but...

...a fetus isn't a person.

You're right.

A strange world exists here. Care to trade definitions?

These five bastards have knowingly created new rights for corporations

Actually, they struck down certain portions of a piece of legislation that was signed into law in 2002. They didn't create "new rights". They correctly re-instated previously-existing rights in accordance with the constitution.

Let me ask you this:

Where in the hell do you think the slush-fund money was coming from to finance all of those shadowy 527 ads?

Elected judges all over the country will have moneyed interests threatening to spend whatever it takes against them unless they play ball.... now that's good for the county.

btw- Really liked Chief Roberts EXXON and AETNA logos on his robe sleeves.....

soon we'll have Congresspeople covered with corporate logos like NASCAR drivers.

"Chris Matthews, I, too, forgot Obama was black for a moment"

My guess is Matthews's message runs something like this: "Obama was presidential, not the first black president, but a president."

Your message, on the other hand, it quite different and probably odious.

It's like they say, Jackie, someone can put lipstick on a pig but you're still a pig.

No, which was clearly a violation of the 1st ammendment. Was suit ever brought before SCOTUS prior to Emancipation regarding slaves and the 1st ammendment?

#587 | Posted by BENDOR

Ergo, a fetus has freedom of speech?
ROTFLMAO!

My point being Danni, is that it took a lawsuit to shoot down the unconstitutional portions of McCain/Feingold.

A fetus, like a Republican, has the freedom to suck.

"And there's the rub. The left in general, and danni in particular want corporations as slaves to their glorious Peoples State."

ER...Corporations are slaves, they are property, they can be sold, they can even be "killed" at will by their owners. If the fourteenth amendment was intended to grant them the same rights that it granted to former slaves it would be stated in that amendment.
You can argue all you want but constitutionally these five bastards ignored the constitution and they were fully aware of it and were carrying out an intended agenda.

Some people say Justice Kennedy murdered his mother.

Yeppers. Judicial activism is fine when rightwingers do it.

Especially when they do it in order to enhance the rights of corporations at the expense of the rights of We the People.

Or did Lincoln say government of, by, and for the corporation?

I forget.

"No, which was clearly a violation of the 1st ammendment."

That is ridiculous. The first amendment was written by slave owners. It took another amendment to grant former slaves rights. Slaves did not have rights Jeff no matter how convenient it would be for your attempt to justify the SC decision.

No judicial activism in this ruling, Cork.

Sorry.

It's Ok Danni, Your glorious leader knows better than the Supreme Court and Congress. Soon, He will not need them anymore.

That's a great idea, actually. Americans shouldn't have to go to Google to find out who bankrolls politicos' campaigns--if they're willing to cash the checks, they should wear it proudly. Obama, Geithner, and Fwank can wear Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and AIG banners on their jackets. Some libtard running for president and giving a speech in Mississippi or Tennesse or Georgia should have to explain his UAW sign on his campaign car.

What a concept! Roger Federer gets big checks from Nike and Rolex, and wears them. Bawney Fwank should have to explain, every day, what Wells Fargo and JPMorgan and AIG stickers are doing on his suit coat, when he's hustling votes down on Main Street.

It was so awesome to watch this State of the Union. There has never been such a polarizing president, or one that spins the truth so much, and so obviously. He religiously believes that the government is the only way to fix all our problems and is incapable of thinking any other way. This country is built around the capacity of the individual. Socialism and capitalism are not compatible.

The great news is that he won't change and move to the center, so the democrats are fucked. They bad news is that there is still almost a year before they are deposed.

The left in general, and danni in particular want corporations as slaves to their glorious Peoples State.

I can own a corporation. I can make a corporation do what I want. I can dissolve (kill) a corporation. A corporation cannot have independent thought.

Sure sounds like an individual worthy of free speech rights ($1.99 sarcasm flag).

There has never been such a polarizing president, or one that spins the truth so much,

Did you sleep through 2001-2008?

"Chris Matthews, I, too, forgot Obama was black for a moment"

My guess is Matthews's message runs something like this: "Obama was presidential, not the first black president, but a president."
* * * *

Maybe. But it was Obama's blackness that got the libbies all excited in the first place. It was probably Matthews explaining that the thrill is gone, that an Obama speech doesn't give him a boner anymore, and that he's just another pol. I wonder how many libbies are secretly wishing to themselves, boy--I wish I had my primary vote back. Wouldn't Hillary probably have been better?

That is ridiculous. The first amendment was written by slave owners. It took another amendment to grant former slaves rights. Slaves did not have rights Jeff no matter how convenient it would be for your attempt to justify the SC decision.

Then your argument basically boils down to certain classes of speakers that you don't like should be treated exactly as slaves were treated.

Going further, the suppression of slave-speech may very well have been deemed unconstitutional by SCOTUS if suit was ever brought, which to the best of my knowledge, never happened.

If suit hadn't been brought against McCain/Feingold, its unconstitutionality would continue on.

It's Ok Danni, Your glorious leader knows better than the Supreme Court and Congress. Soon, He will not need them anymore.

Which for the umpteenth time has nothing to do with the constitutional issue at hand.

If the Dem controlled congress lets the Executive order crap slide they are idiots. Maybe it's time for the Supreme Court to finally look into it. Executive Orders were originally meant only for his cabinet. They have been out of control for a long time.

Oh Heffy....

Commentary: Citizens United vs. FEC is an egregious exercise of judicial activism

Thomas E. Mann is the W. Averell Harriman Chair and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

"Then your argument basically boils down to certain classes of speakers that you don't like should be treated exactly as slaves were treated."

The point Jeff was that slaves were considered property, property is not a person and does not have rights, exactly like a corporation. When slaves legally became "people" they gained rights, sorry but it doesn't mention corporations in the Emancipation Proclamation or in any amendment.
The activist bastards wrote new law to further their corporate agenda and most Americans who bother to read know it.

BTW, I heard Justice Alito is a Nazi.

Heffy?

That's 'El Jeffe' to you, Cork!

"It's Ok Danni, Your glorious leader knows better than the Supreme Court and Congress. Soon, He will not need them anymore."

STIRSUMUP you really got me! You're so smart!

"El Gordo" more like ;^)

The first ammendment doesn't bestow rights, Danni. It limits the government's ability to suppress speech, among other things. That is the fundamental flaw in your argument.

BTW, I heard Justice Alito is a Nazi.

You heard wrong, he beats up prositutes. Roberts is the Nazi. Please, get your facts straight.

STIRSUMUP you really got me! You're so smart!

Uhhh! Why would I want to....get you...

El Gordo?

That actually sounds kinda cool.

Cork,

You say El Gordo; I say El Jeffe.

How about a comprimise?

How about El Toro? - he was the fatter of the Tijuana Toads.

El Toro?

I don't know... makes you sound like a lawnmower....

Lawnmower?

Nah!

This is Michigan.

It makes me sound like a snowthrower.

The first ammendment doesn't bestow rights

That must be why it is called the Bill of Rights.

I do understand your point though but it is weak, I think that the prisoners at Guantanamo illustrates that. By your argument, since they are not specifically excluded from those who have rights they then do have the same rights as you or I.
The same court that has ruled corporations have the right of freedom of speech because they aren't specifically excluded also says those terrorists do not. They need to make up their minds.

BTW, Some say Justice Scalia is a Muslim jihadists and should be locked up in Guantanamo.

snowthrower.

Right now you are being a BS slinger... read and address the link on this judicial activism.

Now, before I take a wet noodle to you.

It is called the Bill of Rights, but the general name given to a collection of 10 ammendments doesn't change the fact that the 1st ammendment doesn't bestow any rights - it strips certain powers from the government.

The same court that has ruled corporations have the right of freedom of speech because they aren't specifically excluded also says those terrorists do not. They need to make up their minds.

There is nothing unconstitional about allowing Al Queda to raise money and purchase air-time to run a political ad during election season. This act is not even remotely analogous with contributing directly to a candidate.

Oh, and are you seriously attempting to draw equivalence between terrorist enemy-combatants and corporations?

Some say Justice Scalia is a Muslim jihadists and should be locked up in Guantanamo...

...No, no, no! Scalia is a Catholic and he routinely rapes altar boys. Jeez! Can't you get anything right?

read and address the link on this judicial activism.

OK.

Give me a minute to do just that.

Cork,

I read the content contained within your link.

Mann does a very good job of pointing out the potential pitfalls as an outcome of this ruling. But what he utterly fails to do is address why this ruling is unconstitutional. The best he had was a couple of somewhat related prior cases that could fall under the auspice of Stare Decisis. It's not up to the courts to ruminate over such issues as it pertains to outcome. The court is supposed to interpret and apply the constitution. It is up to the legislative branch to debate the effects the constitution has on our society when applied; and if those effects are negative, a process is in place to affect change - the ammendment.

The ruling is clearly activism in that it changes current law in McCain-Feingold.

Fortunately, it's Barney Frank that leads the House committee in charge of making rules for corporations, and that is where this unfortunate piece of rightwing activism will be neutered.

so lets talk.

last nights LECTURE was filled with bullshit

transparent??? are you kidding me..4 letters...cspan

earmarks...whose name is signed on the last budget filled with earmarks?

no lobbyists? ..please dont insult us with this one....they are all over the obama white house...

gop party of No...two examples this is a fuckin lie..

solutions@gop.gov
and this AM...paul ryan said that he has had for some time a "road map for americas future' that the cbo has even drawn up and he has sent it to the dems THREE TIMES...and hasnt even gotten a phone call saying they got it..
so dont let barry LIE to you about if you have an idea he wants to hear it,...thats bullshit.....and I just listed two PROOFS of that

The ruling is clearly activism in that it changes current law in McCain-Feingold.

Let's ruminate on that for a moment.

Let me see if I am understanding you properly:

Congress writes a law that is flagrantly unconsitutional.

A plaintiff files suit and it ends up before SCOTUS.

If they rule against the law, no matter how blatantly unconsitutional said law is, they are...activists?

Interesting.

and how about the media

cnn started a countdown in the afternoon by hour, min, and secound til the speech..

AND chris matthews shows he is a racist underneath that TINGLY legs of his

"for an hour I forgot he was black"

I turned off the tv after about ten mins and turned on npr...you should do that sometime.
I did it because I was sick of looking at the two clowns behind him...the noted 'mouth' biden and botox biddy pelosi

WHO by the way...just before this called for DEFENSE to be a part of the spending freeze..
anymore needed to be seen as to why DEMS are dangerous to our security and defense?????????

UH>..mister president...can you remember back to senate vote on freddie mae and mac when REform of those two were being looked at.
YOU VOTED TO BLoCK cloture in the senate if I remember correctly.....

Jeff

Judicial activism is making law instead of interpreting it.

The best‐known example of conservative judicial activism is Lochner v. New York (1905), a case in which the Court invalidated New York's law regulating the hours bakers could work as a violation of "liberty of contract," a part of the doctrine of substantive due process under the Fourteenth Amendment.

www.answers.com

At least that WAS the best known case.

think IM lying about obama lie about lobbyist??

check this out...checkerouters..

www.redstate.com

Judicial activism is making law instead of interpreting it.

Agreed.

But that didn't happen in this case.

Certain parts of McCain/Feingold were contrary to the Constitution, which is a document that limits the powers of the government to enact law. Portions of this piece of legislation overstepped and were rightly shot-down.

Lochner v. New York was also a case in which a NY law was found to violate the the 14th amemdment, and it is a classic case of judicial activism.

The best part of the speech last night!

www.drudge.com

IN another part of the speech the President talked about taking away tax deductions for companies who outsource jobs. I hope he was serious about that, it could very well be the most important thing he spoke about. If we don't somehow stop the outsourcing the economy will never really recover.

here is how we can stop them from going overseas

tax cuts
like the ones from 1921 and the ones from jfk and the ones from RR...

PosT 840

ditto..

this mcdonnal guy...is that his name...could be a national leader someday...his tone was on the mark correct and he did it without the angst and shit like some others.

that part, along with the part about the spending freeze, gathered chuckles from both sides of the aisle (according to the pundits on the radio....I was driving at the time).

Nice ideas but, IMO, has no chance of every coming in the form of a bill to his desk.

irony it came out today

weekly job numbers

450,000
20,000 higher than predicted..

nice job barry and democrats!!!!!

AND where was the info on WAR ON TERROR..
oops forgot..there is no war on terror..just ask the 300 people who were just lucky on christmas day..

"renewed and focused" was the way barry described his white house in this area..
yeah right....

NO mention of GITMo and his PROMISE to close it in a year

no mention of fort hood..directly,....

"Nice ideas but, IMO, has no chance of every coming in the form of a bill to his desk."

I don't know, with the focus on jobs I don't see how they can continue to avoid the issue. We'll see.

Leadership and laying blame are not synonymous; we have a child in the WH, it would be nice to stop the tantrums and deliver on all of the promises made. Has the earth cooled? Seas lowered? "Unprecedented" hubris. And while there are many people that were very sick of W when he left -- I for one am even more sick of hearing how he is to blame one year in to the "one we have been waiting for." Obama -- grow up, grow a set and let's get the job done!

Danni,

He won't get a bill that creates the spending freeze he was referring to and he won't get the tax deduction elimination either.

His idea of $30 billion for jobs coming from the banks??? maybe.

don't know, with the focus on jobs I don't see how they can continue to avoid the issue. We'll see.

I can because they are still telling us that health insurance SO CALLED reform IS job focus........

wanT TO TAKE A BREAK fROM all of this
catch the rerun of stewart last night.
ONE OF HIS BEST...the bit about dems chasing a car that kept taunting them about stopping was real good..

Only one in America?

I don't trust anything Obama says. He's full of empty words. He doesn't bring anything to the table. I'm sure his election team will be working overtime to rekindle the popularity he enjoyed during the presidential election. Look for this during his speeches. It will be staged fanaticism.

Obama,a life built on oratorical skills ala Frederick Douglas and a persona and cult of personality. Danni would have easily followed a Jim Jones.

Hey MATSOP you voted for Bush right???

and no mention of how asses like you have tried to divide the country and bring it to it's knees with their partisan bullshit...oh wait yes he did!

Hey DANNI; how ya feeling?

Wait 'til "China, Inc" and others start buying hundreds of millions in ads to get those who'll do their bidding elected.

Corporations don't vote. Citizens do. The SCOTUS ruling turns back the hands of time to another era:

At the beginning of the 20th Century when Teddy Roosevelt broke up the monopolies, Senators were referred to as "Senator Railroad" or "Senator Steel". They didn't represent people, they represented robber barons and corporations ONLY. This ruling only makes what is now a bad situation with lobbying worse.

No one can contribute more than $10,000 to an individual candidate as things were. With this ruling the sky's the limit on corporations wielding power over our democracy.

I know, I know - crazy talk.

What boyd is trying to say is that the affirmative action president failed at harvard before he failed in Washington.

You're welcome, boyd.

When I get lied to, I enjoy being lied to by someone who can do it properly. And with a good deal of eloquence and grace.

That's why I voted for Obama, not because I was foolish enough to believe anything would be any different.

Until the system is purged of the lobbyists and other forms of corruption, nothing will change, ever.

And everyone one of you who are identifiable partisan hacks are responsible for it because you very plainly see the corruption in your rival group but are are completely blind to the corruption in your own.

Therefore, only half the people that should be pissed off about the corruption ever will be. divide and conquer.

President Obama is Awesome!!!

He knocked the filthy selfish corporate corrupted RepubliCons right between the eyes where they needed it!

Obstructing is not leadership

In 2000 (under Clinton and Dems), America had a $200 billion dollar annual SURPLUS, but Obama was handed more than a $12 trillion dollar debt from the Neocons with an annual $1.5 Trillion dollar deficit!

And you ditto dummies are demanding more of the same - How much fucking RepuliTarded should be legal anymore!??

WHile We all were upset that Hilary was defeated by Obama for a while...

Last nite proved that America made the absolute right choice and best President possible with Obama to recover America from all the RepubliCon corporate corruption and carnage and decade of world destruction

Obama Rocks!!!

Perhaps another American company, like News Corp (oh wait - the second highest owner is a Saudi) will put out ads against Chavez' ads.

But hey, Alito. There's no "foreign" influence allowed, right? 404e takes care of that. Doesn't it?

Damn activist judges!

Obama HAS surely SHOWN HIS TRUE COLORS and publically deceived all supporters that have by their trusting support been deceived of his cunning craftiness, and have displayed their support for him unwisely, for his deceptive agenda.

Thereby all those that still desire to stand for liberty, freedoms and truth do not forget to stand accordinlly for those that will support the freedoms and liberties America still stands for in the 2010 elections, and beyond...
