Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Poverty grew at twice the rate of U.S. population growth from 2000 to 2008, now at 39.1 million Americans, according to a report from Brookings. In 2008, 91.6 million people -- more than 30 percent of the nation's population -- fell below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. This is representative of more individuals (52.5 million) than those below the poverty line (39.1 million) in 2008. Broken down to individual areas, there's at least ten U.S. cities with poverty rates of around 30%. Moreover, Brookings latest research highlights how poverty has been skyrocketing in the suburbs like never before.

The closer we get to being like Kenya, the more Barankrupt likes it.

Let's outsource some more jobs.
Free trade, what a great idea.
I think I still hear that sucking sound.

America is fast becoming a neo-fuedal state.

A small percentage of hyper-riche and the rest competing fer McJobs.

Rtards continue to stick up fer the corporate crooks and decrying any attempts to reverse the dangerous trend towards massive wealth inequality.

Is that cos they're heartless or brainless?

Always wondered.

Be Well.

"Is that cos they're heartless or brainless?"

It's cuz the heartless easily manipulate the brainless who thank them for the privelege of being poor in "the greatest country in the world!"

if you have a cell phone, are you still in poverty?

"if you have a cell phone, are you still in poverty?"

Or a car
Or a TV
Or a/c
Or a computer with internet
Or PS3 or xbox or wii
Or a pizza chain on speed dial
Or a fridge full of beer
Or ...

Did anyone see the poverty line defined? Maybe I read too fast.

And Americans are spoiled anyway. : ) Huge numbers of us don't know what real poverty is. I'm not making a moral judgment, just an observation of awareness. "I'm so poor" has become like "I'm depressed"--figurative, not literal for most of us.

Too right pragmatist.
Are the same standards being used with dollars adjusted for inflation? I am genuinely bored of articles with absent or dubious facts.

I think I still hear that sucking sound.

Did you vote for Bill Clinton during his first campaign?

Huge numbers of us don't know what real poverty is.

From my late teens until my early 20's, I didn't make more than $10,000/year. Had it not been for family and friends, I would probably have ended up on the streets. The only thing that kept me from doing drugs or becoming an alcoholic or turning to crime was pure laziness.

Turns out, my laziness was also the reason why I made no more than $10,000/year.

Or a car
Or a TV
Or a/c
Or a computer with internet
Or PS3 or xbox or wii
Or a pizza chain on speed dial
Or a fridge full of beer

None of these things have to do with poverty. They have to do with poor prioritization. There are plenty of people in the town I live in who drive flashy cars with big rims and custom paint jobs. Follow them home and see that they and their children live in a dump, have to get clothing from a second hand store and require welfare to feed them...welfare that they use to buy processed foods versus fresh fruits and vegetables.

Then there are people who live in the same conditions but they work as hard as they can at the only job they can find in a town where all but one of the manufacturers have left to go overseas. They probably have a TV. They might have a computer with the internet. They might have beer in the fridge and air conditioning. None of those things means that they are any less impoverished than the folks who don't even try to help themselves.

One group deserves all of the help we can give them while the other group deserves a kick in the pants.

"The closer we get to being like Kenya, the more Barankrupt likes it."

His an idiot what?

"Did you vote for Bill Clinton during his first campaign?"

And lived to regret it. I remember the debate about NAFTA both on TV and the one among people around me, I'd say I believed Clinton's logic at the time. I think he sold NAFTA on the idea that it is inevitable and it is possible he was right. I do think though that we could have tried much harder than we did to force countries like Japan, China and India to deal with us on a more fair basis. All three still have tariffs in place that significantly penalize importers of American goods while we let their goods flow in freely. It has to stop, soon I hope.

As soon as the masses are poor we will have achieved true socialism. The elites and the rest of us.

We need to start producing things if we ever hope to climb out of poverty. I would consider myself poor but not because of salary more because of too much debt.

No, what we need is a tax policy that encourages corporations to outsource jobs and profit from it, because if the CEO makes an extra $11 million he will buy two rainslickers at Walmart instead of one.

See?

Job created.

Nothing. Because he is a defender of the status quo.

It's the hooker budget, he has expensive taste.

"What's Obama doing about that?"

Not much from what I've seen so far. It isn't like Republicans are going to do any better though. The corporations make great profits manufacturing cheaply overseas and selling the stuff here. Eventually we'll be too poor to buy much but I suppose they think the Chinese market will be bigger than ours anyway so they have put their lot in with China. I fear that by the time enough Americans wake up it will be too late. Probably already is.

Oddly enough, I'm agreeing with you. Sending manufacturing jobs overseas is not a good long-term strategy. Real wages are *not* going up. Combine that with higher costs the average family is seeing and their budget is getting squeezed ... and that assumes they still have their job(s).

>I would consider myself poor but not because of salary more because of too much debt.

And for a second I was giving you some credit. Didn't you say once that you ran up debt going to school or getting some kind of technical training? If so, I'll not be as harsh as I originally intended. I always looked at classes/training to be something I was investing in, because I expected a payback in higher wages, job security, etc. at some point.

However, for too many people their debt is largely due to making poor choices. Credit card issuers are also to blame for pushing their products on people and getting them hooked on credit that they found hard to afford.

Yes but I have student loans, car payment, motorcycle payment. It adds up a while.

in the past 2 years, my (white collar) company has eliminated the christmas party, eliminated an associates program, eliminated the day after thanksgiving as a holiday, eliminated bonuses, dramatically reduced pay raises and we are now looking at either 64% increase in health insurance premiums or a dramatic shift in our health insurance program.

This is in a highly sucessful white collar industry, in a company that has been around for over 100 years.

This has been a dramatic shift in a matter of 2 years. I can only imagine what it is like for people without jobs.

I attended a Legislative day in my State's capital yesterday. Our Sec of Treasury (long time legislator as well) said that he recently spoke with the largest technical trade school in the State and was told that 53% of the students currently enrolled in that school ALREADY had a 4-year degree. His point was about the importance of encouraging high school students to not ignore the idea of a trade school.

64%???? Good God! are the premiums going up that much or is this just a shift from the employer to the employees?

Sounds suspiciously like a premium shift. Would be interesting to know if they are self funded or fully insured. Fully insrured rates went up nationally between 5%-13%. Self funded, if last year was unduly expensive could rise dramatically.

This may also be a scare tactic that is generally used to lower benefit levels while cost shifting to employees. I would not be surprised if they start trying to sell you on HSA's and HDHP's (if they haven't already)...

Good luck with that one.

It is supposedly not a premium shift.

It is supposedly because we have a cadillac plan, the company lowballed us to get our business, higher than usual usage, new mandates, you know the usual bullshit.

that is my thought exactly. we have what I would imagine is an avg benefit, 90/10 on most in network stuff, $1000 deductible, PPO plan

lots of scare words used in the meeting.

now they are talking high deductible, small network of providers, HMO style etc.

two wars and the Bush "tax cuts" and more Americans moving into poverty? yep, time to cut food programs and the like. :P

"As soon as the masses are poor we will have achieved true socialism. The elites and the rest of us."

Lets see...

"The British Social Class System

The British society has often been considered to be divided into three main groups of classes:

the Upper Class
Often people with inherited wealth. Includes some of the oldest families, with many of them being titled aristocrats.

the Middle Class
The majority of the population of Britain. They include industrialists, professionals, business people and shop owners.

Lower or Working Class
People who are agricultural, mine and factory workers."

What was that about socialist countries having 2 classes? Didn't look it up before posting did you? I believe the word you were fumbling for was "communism", two VERY different things.

#5 and #6 are either trolls or complete morons who can't figure out how "some people" can be in (or under) poverty and post on the internets. or have cell phone.

here, i'll troll a bit: mb the phone is stolen? asshats.

I switched over to the HSA this year because the modelling we've done show the same out of pocket as a PPO, but our company is seeding the HSA with $1500...

If your healthy, an HSA is a good option (esp for higher earners)...

I've never been a big fan of HMO's, although the provider contracts are strict enough to afford you a number of protections from balance billing.

Like I said, good luck...

Basically - we have spent over 5 TRILLION on reducing poverty in this country with no discernable difference in the poverty rate since 1968.

from the 50's to the 60's poverty rate dropped from 20% of the population to around 13% where it has roughly stayed since....no matter the "war on poverty" of LBJ, the Great Society, Welfare, Workfare, Food coupons, ect.

Why - one of the main reason is that the definition of poverty in the US has constantly changed. The average income line for poverty has been adjusted to meet the political demands of the time. As it is; the poor in America lead everyother countries poor in all the basics by a large margin.

As an example: The average person living in poverty today has more square footage of living space than a middle class European.

There are 86 countries where a significant portion of the population live on less than 2 dollars a day in income.

So if just throwing money at a problem doesn't fix it what does? There is a group at MIT that has done multiple studies and found - suprise surprise - INCENTIVES change behavior - which change poverty. Two excerpts below:

www.fastcompany.com

"To find out whether incentives would inspire teachers to work harder, they persuaded the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh to promise bonuses to teachers based on improvement of their pupils' test scores. The massive experiment, covering 300 primary schools, found that even small amounts of performance-based pay led to substantial improvement on tests. Educators weren't just teaching to the test: Students scored higher on both mechanical questions and those measuring their understanding of broader concepts."

"Working with the Indian charity Seva Mandir, his team randomly placed mothers into two groups: One received free delivery of immunizations, while the other received delivery plus 1 kilogram of lentils per visit -- and, after her child completed all vaccinations, a set of bowls. Immunization rates barely improved in the delivery-only group, but in the lentils group, they jumped to 37%. "A bag of lentils is not going to do anything," says Banerjee, "if people really have those traditional beliefs."

The net is: 1) Incentives - Pay for work is the primary motivator for any population 2) Using money to add INCENTIVES for working is the best way to address poerty - NOT paying people who are doing nothing - that is a disincentive.

In the US the primary drivers for poverty is 1) unmarried women without a husband (23% in the poverty level) 2) lack of work - not that they could not get it..people just not trying.

how many classes did you say were "in" communism?

""Communism" it seems, has been the catch-all phrase for anything that threatened corporate fascism."

"The Communist Manifesto was a rebellion against the extreme poverty of the lower class."
---
"The Communists do not form a separate party opposed to other working-class parties.
They have no interests separate and apart from those of the proletariat as a whole.
They do not set up any sectarian principles of their own, by which to shape and mould the proletarian movement.
The Communists are distinguished from the other working-class parties by this only: 1. In the national struggles of the proletarians of the different countries, they point out and bring to the front the common interests of the entire proletariat, independently of all nationality. 2. In the various stages of development which the struggle of the working class against the bourgeoisie has to pass through, they always and everywhere represent the interests of the movement as a whole."

sounds about what we pay, our contribution (employees) is around 40% of the total.

My opinion is the insurance co. are gouging us and my employers are shifting the costs to the employees.

with 10% unemployment it is a employers market and they are shifting burden to employees less capable of moving between jobs.

you could ask. I am on our health benefits committee

Is there a way to find out what my employer pays.

ask them.

my company gives us a report showing us what it costs to retain us.

salaries/commissions/bonuses etc..
FICA
401K matches
health/dental/life/disability insurance costs
personal use of company car

it adds up to a pretty high number when you include all of that.

I'll ask my union benefits rep then.

I am on our health benefits committee

what does that do?

I mean...you aren't privy to the premiums being charged to the company nor do you have any say in how much the employees are going to contribute.....and you aren't sure if the company is even changing the contribution amounts.

what does this committee do?

Could we trade some of these American poverty fucks for some Haitian immigrants.

in theory we vote on the health care benefit for the year. the owner sits in and advises, typically they pay for 1/2 the premium increase, this year no deal.

we have different health ins companies come in and bid against each other for out business. This year the proposals are to use a word, astronomical.

I am privy to the premiums, we decide on the plans, benefits etc. Right now we are in a decision making process.

Sadly, that's happening every day at companies large and small ...

When a family member of mine was diagnosed with cancer, she was laid off and her policy canceled in 2 1/2 seconds.

Au,

hold on now. to be fair, HIPPA and other employment laws are supposed to prohibit that sort of practice.

and then there is COBRA for your family member as well.

Supposed to... There's the rub.

When you're laid off how are you supposed to pay COBRA premiums?

Insurance companies do what they want to and have deep pockets. When someone comes down with a terminal illness, they don't have the energy or resources to fight city hall ...

She ended up on Medicaid after my wife and I sprang for a mastectomy and tried to save her house from foreclosure. Medicaid treated her terrifically BTW.

the insurance companies are SUPPOSEDLY laying people off.

not sure why they would be doing that. are people going to the doctor less?

Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed.

The dollar has became a safe haven again because investors are getting uneasy with the Euro and the Yen. Gold went down too, but it has very strong support at $1,000 to $1,100. That's where the Asians seem to be buying as a safe haven. So the musical chairs have thinned down to gold and the dollar. This is win-win for the Chinese. There is no telling how long it takes for gold to run away from the dollar.

Surprisingly, a trend for higher rates has been noticed in the Southern "Bible Belt" of the United States. In 1998, the Southern states, with the exception of only one state, had almost double the divorce rates as those of Northern states.

Besides the factors listed above, a contribution to the higher divorce rate may be religion. Southern states tend to have fundamentalist Protestants, who tend to be more accepting of divorce than Northern Roman Catholics. "." http://divorce.lovetoknow.com/ Divorce_Rates

Pretty irrelevant being that black men in the inner cities routinely have kids out of wed lock. It is not uncommon for black men to have more than one kid out of wedlock with different women. Don't you work for KIA ? So you like the fact that Obama has taken over two of your employers competitors and will have the backing of the US Treasury. What has Obama done for you?

Obama is going to give people in my income bracket a tax cut. He is also going to give me a reduction in my student loan payments. Hopefully he gets healthcare passed. I don't work for KIA my friend I went to technical school with does. They are built in GA. KIA has such a good warranty I would choose them over any American car.

No damn wonder look what a black ssob we have for a president...

Why don't you just call him the N word ya ball-less fuck?

What Obama being black has to with 8 years of economy raping by a white man is beyond logic, but to use racial slurs against him is a new low for this looser wannabe rock star.

$10,830.00 Poverty line for 1 person
$14,570.00 Poverty line for 2 people

$7.55 Minimum wage where I live (rural MS)
$15,704.00 Full time job at min. wage

So basically, if you don't work you're poor, if you do work you're not poor.

But wait, they said 200% of the poverty line didn't they? So for a family of 3 making $36,620 a year? Doesn't cut it, you're still poor! Have 2 kids and make $44,100? Na, you're poor.

So basically, the average American family is broke! America's reduced to a third-world country. Just have to move the poverty line a bit higher, say 100%.

And here I thought poverty was lacking food, clothing, and shelter. Stupid me, poverty is anything less than a good home, new clothes, 2 cars, internet, TV, and a dog.

"Poverty grew at twice the rate of U.S. population growth from 2000 to 2008,"

Yup, sounds like the Democrats' fault alright.

Hey slug, name one thing Obama has done for you. Just one.

Reality. Obama hasn't done anything for you but you believe. Plus the fact that you don't have any problem receiving stolen goods. (You coveting slug) Don't worry though, you're not alone. Which doesn't make it right it just makes it, IS.

LOL. I did not say what is Obama GOING to do. I asked what he has DONE. How are you getting a tax cut when he wants to pass cap & tax and healthcare. Congress will never pass writing off student loans. Pay your debts and stop being a deadbeat.

Obama made my COBRA affordable, at a time when I really needed it. He has saved me about four or five grand in health insurance premiums. I would have dropped COBRA by now if the Feds weren't picking up 65% of the cost.

Actually the Stimulus package was written by the Appollo Group not Obama. So thank Jeff Jones for your COBRA

More Americans Falling Towards Poverty

Of course these back to back DRUDGE posts seem consistent to the Obama KOol Aid drinkers.

Real Estate! It's your path to FREEDOM!!!

Whatever, Obama signed it. It means a hell of a lot more to me than Bush's couple hundred bucks.

It makes perfect sense.

The rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer.

Or did you miss the past 35 years of American history?

In the future, the rich will get poorer and the poor will get poorer.

Don't worry, more of the same debt-financed warfare and welfare will fix the problem!

Where is Nanc when you need a welfare recipient to bash healthcare reform?
