Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

"In January 1848, James Marshall had a work crew camped on the American River at Coloma near Sacramento, California. The crew was building a saw mill for John Sutter. On the cold, clear morning of January 24, 1848, Marshall found a few tiny gold nuggets. Thus began one of the largest human migrations in history as a half-million people from around the world descended upon California in search of instant wealth."

Gold First Discovered In California 162 Years Ago Today

The best day in Ray's life.

Yup. When I was 10 we went up there and did some panning. Got a little.

Wow, my thread was a real crowdpleaser. Two whole posts. lol

Not everyone has had the chance to try it, but once you've gotten into goldpanning, you tend to look at every riverbed and the surrounding area as maybe holding a gold nugget or two -- now matter how off course or unlikely it may be. I'm taking my couple of goldpans with me no matter where I end up moving. I think that's what's known as "gold fever."

Two whole posts.

well, now it's doubled.

just like the value of gold recently!!

Interesting background on Sutter. I always thought that the mother load hadn't really been found there yet, and that over thousands of years, there was more gold to be found deeper in the river bed under all the silt, or in other areas where the river may have changed course due to earthquakes and floods.

It would be ineresting to know the history of the gold we sometimes take for granted. All gold was formed in the super nova explosion of a star. It would be interesting to know how long ago the star that formed the gold we wear blew up, how old it was before it exploded, and were there planets around it with life on them at the time.

I've been to the Golden Nugget Hotel in Vegas many times and always go to see the 61 pound "Hand of Faith" gold nugget whenever I've been at the hotel.

It's the largest gold nugget ever found in the world using only a metal detector. I can just picture the look on the face of the guy, probably only some weekend prospector, when he dug only 6 inches down into the ground and came up with this gold nugget --

"Hand of Faith" gold nugget was discovered just so, only six inches below the surface standing in a vertical position, on October of 1980. Weighing 875 troy ounces (roughly 61 pounds and 11 ounces), the Hand of Faith was uncovered from Wedderburn, Victoria, Australia..."

Ray -- if you happen to read this, have you ever seen the "Hand of Faith" gold nugget in Vegas?

Thanks for that info about the formation of gold. I never knew before my gold earrings and bracelet might have originated as stardust! Went on a fact finding tour after I read what you wrote. You might find this article interesting --

"The Origin of Gold"

CalifChris

Thanks for the link. It's always interesting to read about the origins of the universe and the things in it. I always thought gold ran in veins, and was either mined or water rushed through the veins and carried it down streams. With your info on that big 61 pound nugget, it seems a big chunk of it could be anyplace. Maybe you should go over your yard with a metal detector before you move? I'd hate to see you freak out if the buyer shows up on the internet with a 71 pound nugget found in your front yard.lol

Yes, Chris -- every atom in your body, every atom around you, every atom you breathe with the exception of hydrogen was formed in the core of a star.

Here's another interesting atom provenance fact: Chances are almost 100% certainty that with every breath you take, you are breathing in at least 2000 atoms that anyone at least 100 years dead has breathed. IOW with that breath you just took you inhaled 2000 atoms that Jesus once did, 2000 that Napoleon once did, 2000 that Cleopatra's hairdresser just did, etc.

IOW with that breath you just took you inhaled 2000 atoms that Jesus once did

Stop lying. Every atom that Jesus breathed was found and confiscated by Hitler. After WWII Odessa smuggled them to Chile and are housed in modern day Ethiopia

you are breathing in at least 2000 atoms that anyone at least 100 years dead has breathed.

Is that where I got this fucking cold? Those assholes should stay home when they're sick!

Did you know they discovered gold in Harlem? Check out this link:

So chances are I am breathing atoms from the Pandemic flu in 1918. When will I die?

I think you're drinking dinosaur piss too.

Fascinating stuff, Goat! I often learn so much from you guys -- especially when it comes to subjects like astronomy and space.

Or maybe my backyard? What you said got me to thinking. Do you remember me mentioning a few times on here about having buried a Statute of St. Joseph upside down in the dirt in my backyard? If you bury his statute upside down about one foot deep in the dirt facing towards the street, make a novena (a certain prayer said for 9 days), it's suppose to be a surefire way of getting your house to sell really quick when you put it on the market.

Bury St. Joseph's statute to sell your home fast

Like how funny would it be if, when on the day escrow closes and I go into the backyard to dig up St. Joseph's statute so I can take it with me when I move, all of the sudden I hear a big (((clink))) sound and there buried in the dirt right next to St. Joseph is a 100 pound gold nugget. Eureka!

Would that finally make you a believer?

I can just picture your eyes rolling towards the ceiling. LOL

CalifChris

I do recall that you said you were going to bury that statue. If you were to dig it up to take it with you before you moved, and found a 100 pound gold nugget in your back yard, it might not make me a believer, but I would give you this advice---don't sell the house!!!
