A year ago Friday, the new president signed an executive order to "provide the process whereby Guantanamo will be closed no later than one year from now." Today, the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, remains open, with nearly 200 detainees. "To keep the American people safe, the president pledged to close Guantanamo Bay, and he'll do that," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said.

OOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!

Yes AFKAbabble...

If GW Bush was still here to kick around absolutely nothing would have been done to solve this HUGE problem that he created. At least Obama is moving forward each day toward a resolution that protects our civil liberties and defends the constitution and the American People as was his charge.

Cookedfish- He was brave enough to say he could do it in a year but as you may have figured it out he can't do it alone. And when you pray for him to fail you pray for America to fail..remember?

The problem is getting resolved. No one will be happy though and Sorry it is not fast enough for you. Try and keep the reality of the complexities of the situation in mind though as you poo poo his efforts.

...but as you may have figured it out he just can't do it.

Fixed that one for ya

Happy Anniversary Obama!

"President Obama is on the campaign trail again in Ohio for yet another bottomless-spending "jobs bill." He recycled his "I will fight for you" lines circa 2008, bashed the insurance companies..."

"Yes, Obama is promising the little people he'll fight for them once he gets to the White House (never mind that he's been there fighting against them for the last 12 months)"

The problem is getting resolved (please explain how). No one will be happy though and Sorry it is not fast enough for you (you mean not fast enough for the dems. Remember the August deadline?). "If GW Bush was (sic) still here to kick around absolutely nothing would have been done to solve this HUGE problem that he created."

Nearly 200 very evil people are safely contained on a Navy base under lock and key and guns. Sounds like Bush in this case created a HUGE solution, so nothing need be done.

"Sorry it is not fast enough for you."

Excuse me, but who set the deadline for closing Luxurious Club Gitmo? Most Americans would prefer that bad people stay locked up where they can do no harm.

Most Americans would prefer that bad people stay locked up where they can do no harm.

Most Americans would prefer that bad people be tried and found guilty, then locked up where they can do no harm, because Americans can be given the exact same status of the people that are locked up and forgotten about without due process.

"Most Americans would prefer that bad people be tried and found guilty,"

You want to pretend that the prisoners at Luxurious Club Gitmo are simply languishing in their cells. But, there is a military tribunal system in place there which has already tried hundreds of cases.

Sounds like rough duty:

---------------

It's been a busy summer at the detention center at the Guantnamo Bay Naval Base. The joint task force in charge of the 226 remaining detaineesthey are never called "prisoners"is spending about $440,000 to expand the recreation yards at Camp 6, a medium-security facility.

At nearby Camp 4, which offers communal living for the most "compliant" captives, the soccer yard is being enlarged.

At Camp 5, a maximum-security facility, another new, $73,000 classroom is under construction, and satellite TV cables have just been installed.

In March, Joint Task Force Guantnamo added art classes to the thrice-weekly instruction it offers in Arabic, Pashtu, and English.

And the estimated 16 detainees who have been cleared for release as soon as Washington can find countries willing to accept them have just received training on new laptop computers, courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer."

97.74.65.51

Gitmo is progressing towards closure as fast as could be expected, given the refusal of other countries to take detainees and Republican-fueled hysteria about putting them in U.S. prison facilities.

I'm not surprised it has taken Obama more than a year to deal with this Bush/Cheney mess.

No doubt about it, it's a mess. But otoh, he did promise to close it. I believe he knew there would be a fight to keep it open and that would expose those that were playing political games.

The needs of the war for oil take precedence over your petty concerns, like freedom, blind justice, equal rights and all that stuff.

Lemme get this straight.

Rtards are outraged that Obama has taken longer to close Gitmo than he stated?

Because they believe firmly that it should be closed?

...Or because they are playing "Gotcha" fer purely political reasons?

The latter?

K, then.

Merely more Faux outrage from the Faux News watchers.

Complaining that Obama isn't cleaning up Bush's messes fast enough without acknowleging their origins is laughable.

Be Well.

Deadlines are SO inconvenient. Especially when you have no plans for how to actually meet them.

i think i've already covered hope and change, so making another statement would be HOPELESSLY redundant...

Actually,
I never expected him to meet this "deadline" since it was clearly obvious the B.O. is way over his head...as a perfect example of the
Peter Principle in action.

Promoted way beyond his skill set.

The problem is getting resolved. ...

No it's not. 50 are being held indefinitely...not enough evidence to go to trial!

www.philly.com

Mission Accomplished!

Death and RCADE,

1) We (conservatives) do not think Gitmo should be closed. We are just pointing out another broken promise by a guy that did not know (and still does not know) what he is doing.

2) The Bush Administration used a review system and let many go...the result was 1 in 8 returning to attack us. They were stupid to let them go - in my opionion they should have been shot as they were not in military clothing. Per Geneva that constitutes being a spy and can be shot.

3) The recent ones released have returned to the battle at a 3-1 pace.

www.msnbc.msn.com

abcnews.go.com

michellemalkin.com

4) The last 2 that Obama released he sent back to Yemen - A Al Qaeda's stronghold. And HE DOESNT think that they will return to the fight? One guy is now the deputy commander there.

5) Treating these guys as criminals and giving them the rights of American citizens is about as stupid - or ignorant as you can get. They are not US citizens - and they are trying to kill us.

Don't bring up the Shoe Bomber - that was before we set up the military tribunals - and we DID interogate him...instead of what Holder did and let him lawyer up.

Net - Obama says stuff he has no idea how he can delivery - most of it is soft on the people and countries that are going to attack us...at the SAME TIME going after our own financial institutions - HARD.

The whole look at the world is completely 180 from reality.

#20 Foshaffer

I checked your MSNBC link. It's about a guy wrongfully arrested twice, not about a guy fighting the US in battle. "They are not US citizens - and they are trying to kill us." Does your gut instinct tell you that? Hard evidence now, or you've got nothing, sorry. That's the American way. It's your look on the world that is "180 from reality."

President Pinocchio strikes again! Haven't seen a picture of him in profile lately but I bet his nose is two feet long by now.

"Gitmo is progressing towards closure as fast as could be expected, given the refusal of other countries to take detainees and Republican-fueled hysteria about putting them in U.S. prison facilities."

Sadly and predictably, Obama and Holder ignored one Congressman's request and the WH continued with their Amateur Hour Show. Until of course the failed Xmas attempt.

It should also be noted, the so called task force in charge of the detainees future are nowhere near having and answer. Which really makes Obama's promise to close Guantanamo in one year nothing but a political stunt.

Um, yet again it should probably be pointed out that Democrats held enough votes in the Senate and House to do whatever they wanted, and didn't.

If the elected representatives and president from your party lack the courage to do what they believe is right, then maybe they shouldn't be in charge of this nation. Blaming their every failure on such a small group of Republicans is pretty pathetic.

Obama was naive coming into this first year in office. He didn't think there really was a threat from Mulsims and that every terrorist in Gitmo was just a poor falafel salesman in the wrong place at the wrong time.

#24 Rob

He may have been a little naive in what he could get done. Definitely many of the people who voted for him were naive about politics. But he got them interested in politics, and now they're seeing how fucked our system is. Hopefully they'll remember the Republicans who rubber-stamped us into wars we could ill-afford, without an exit strategy. We need greater interest from left and right in third parties.

Hopefully they'll remember the Republicans who rubber-stamped us into wars we could ill-afford, without an exit strategy.

why, because that would be a great distraction to the growing list of broken campaign promises along with steadily dropping approval ratings? Not to mention, that Democrats had a filibuster proof majority and could barely get anything done...

Damn republicans and their overwhelming minority!

Yes, we must forget about Bush, Cheney and Iraq, no lessons to be learnt there!

The right-wing cowards that roam these boards are a perfect example of the pants-pissers who claim they're afraid of locking up terrorists in the states as if somehow they would escape.

It's simply political obstructionism, but I do enjoy pointing out how it makes the rightards look like complete pussies.

You have proof that President Obama didn't think there was a threat from muslims?....or your other retarded assertion?

"Yes, we must forget about Bush, Cheney and Iraq, no lessons to be learnt there!

#27 | POSTED BY SCRUMPLET"

Sure there are lessons... one of them is that Republicans get shit done, we can argue good or bad shit until the cows come home, but they get things done and the Democrats cannot. Even with much smaller majorities than the Dems currently have.

"You have proof that President Obama didn't think there was a threat from muslims?....or your other retarded assertion?

See January 2009 to present.

Hows that Gitmo closure going. I think there is a thread about that around here someone. Maybe its on the backpage...

Republicans who still speak up for the Bush administration have no business calling anyone else amateurs.

Obama is a cautious and judicious president when it comes to matters of national security such as Gitmo. If he had met his one-year deadline, none of his critics on the right would be praising him for doing so. They'd be accusing him of risking the America public by acting in haste.

If he had met his one-year deadline, none of his critics on the right would be praising him for doing so.

Probably because not only should it not be closed, but any prison they're moved to is just going to be the same "gulag" while they try to figure out what the hell they can do with some of these guys.

The fact remains the only thing stopping him from closing Gitmo was Democrats.

The fact remains the only thing stopping him from closing Gitmo was Democrats.

You act as if Republicans have zero impact on the decisions made in DC. If Republicans were in favor of Gitmo's closure, they could team up with some Democrats and Obama and get it done. A coalition formed by some Republicans and the majority of the Democrats in Congress could be extremely effective.

You act as if Republicans have zero impact on the decisions made in DC

Oh, no not at all. They have a huge impact. But that's only because the Democrats allow it. Before the Massachusetts vote the Republicans didn't matter in Washington, thankfully the Democrats are easily swayed by what are sometimes very silly arguments (see death panels).

Bottom line, Gitmo should never be closed...The Dem's line: "It's a recuiting too for Al Queda"...Bullshit!

It's a perfect place to hold these animals who want only to kill us but instead, Barry & Holder are going to give these bastards lawyers!

"Obama is a cautious and judicious president when it comes to matters of national security such as Gitmo."

Why did he choose to promise closing Guantanamo within a year? Wouldn't a cautious and judicious President wait until the task force he assigned came back to him with recommendations? He was continuing his "get America's reputation back" apology tour and it is biting him in the ass. Deservedly I might add.

Why did he choose to promise closing Guantanamo within a year?

Because he bought the left wing hype that nobody there really deserved to be there. That everyone could either be put on trial, or simply released with a whole bunch of apologies. Naive.

Obama Orders Gitmo Closed. Now the Hard Part
By Bobby Ghosh Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009

Keeping his campaign promise, President Barack Obama issued an Executive Order to shut down the prison within a year and to halt the use of controversial interrogation techniques. "The message that we are sending around the world is that the United States intends to prosecute the ongoing struggle against violence and terrorism and we are going to do so vigilantly," Obama said at a signing ceremony in the Oval Office. "We are going to do so ... in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals." The news will undoubtedly be welcomed by human rights advocates and those who have long held that Gitmo tainted America's reputation in the world.

Naive.

Just more ambition over talent.

"We are going to do so ... in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals."

"consistent with our values and our ideals." ---what are they?

"consistent with our values and our ideals." ---what are they?

Not sure. I do know Obama and Holder have promised KSM will be tried, found guilty, and executed though.

"consistent with our values and our ideals." ---what are they?

Slow and indecisive apparently

"The right-wing cowards that roam these boards are a perfect example of the pants-pissers who claim they're afraid of locking up terrorists in the states as if somehow they would escape.

Actually you are parroting left talking points. Why spend $100,000,000.00 to have a terrorist tried in NYC? Why spend another $100,000,000 to watch 80 or so terrorists in ILL when you can do the exact same thing at Gitmo for a fraction of the cost? Why do all of that here when it will just upset the citizens who pay their taxes? Why spend foolishly when the US is not economically sound? The few people you have heard on the news have been cherry picked by the state run media to create the exact effect you are parroting. And of course you believe every bit of it.

Why did he choose to promise closing Guantanamo within a year?

To emphasize the importance of closing it within a year and tell the subordinates involved in making it happen to get going.

"To emphasize the importance of closing it within a year and tell the subordinates involved in making it happen to get going."

You seemed to have missed the other part of the retort about being cautious and judicious. As well as Obama not waiting for his task force to advise him. He could have waited six months to sign an Executive Order and not look like a fool today.

It's simply political obstructionism, but I do enjoy pointing out how it makes the rightards look like complete pussies."
#28 | Posted by COMMONSENSE

Obviously if anyone is a pussy, it would be the dems who are obstructing Obama from executing his order. Just curious how your predicatable rant blaming repubs for all Obama's ills, make anyone look like pussies?

"predicatable"

predictable

You were going to think him a fool no matter what he did here, Crispee. Presidents set goals for a variety of reasons. Though it would be nice to be out of Gitmo by the self-imposed one-year deadline, there has been significant progress towards that goal.

You were going to think him a fool no matter what he did . . . Presidents set goals for a variety of reasons . . .

oooops . .
ya assumed the "CHANGE" that ya voted for was "change for the BETTER"

reality sucks - - U Dope

#50 Markh

Closing Gitmo is a change for the better, and it's going to happen. And you will be "outraged" when it does happen because "it makes us weaker." I don't think that way. I will be happy that we are doing what is right, breaking away from the ways of the Right.

To keep the American people safe????
To keep the American people safe???
To keep the American people safe???

The only way to possibly do that is to impeach Obama and set up into office a true American Patriot who is truly concerned for the welfare of AMERICA, and it's truly legal citizens...

Dr Feelgood Then you agree that Dennis Kucinich is the man for the job then?

#52 Dr Goodygood

More! You must say more! Preach it, tell it like it is! Pleeeeease!

Confused at something.

Many times I've been hearing accusations that the Dems are ramming votes though w/out republican support, in essence, not needing it.

So, how is it possible that the republicans are also being blamed for blocking things getting done??

Not sure I get that...I'm probably just too dense to understand how it can be both.
