To be fair to the rescue efforts, Haiti was not known for their infrastructure BEFORE the quake, so it must be beyond a nightmare trying to land and unload planes and then get the supplies to where they are needed.

They have one runway for takeoffs and landings, the us is doing control tower work from the sky, limited parking space for planes, no more jetfuel for refueling so any plane that lands must have enough fuel to get out of there. I'm afraid its going to get worse before it gets better.

I think the idea of hiring some cruise ships and moving people out has merit, unfortunately we are talking MILLIONS of people, suddenly dropping them in Miami or someplace would have ramifications there.

Takes a heck of a lot of practice to land on a carrier. Besides that, there are a 100 other reasons it wouldn't work, too many to list. They need to air-drop and sea-lift supplies until they can get a usable runway

Having been through a couple of mini-disasters, I can state emphatically - drinking water is of the utmost importance.

Fraser also has ordered the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson to steam toward Haiti. The ship was at sea near Virginia when the quake hit and as it sails south, it will stop at Mayport, Florida, Naval Station to pick up supplies.

The US has taken over the airport and the Airforce is controling the take-offs and landings. Biggest problem is no one can refuel ther now.

You do know nothing about that!! Landing on a carrier is almost like a crash landing. Takes lots of practice and an airplane with a tail hook on it.

Of all the types of planes that the Navy can land on a carrier, not one is capable of hauling cargo. The largest is the E-2 Hawkeye, but it was never designed for a multi-task role plus it's packed with AEW gear that can't be easily stripped. And the experiments they did with a C-130 proved to be so dangerous they gave up the notion. Besides, the D-130 needed JATO to get off the deck.

The bulk of any relief supplies will have to be delivered via cargo ship and Haiti's ports are not world-class facilities. As there is evidently no re-fueling capability left on the ground, any flights in will have to carry enough fuel to make Puerto Rico on the way out. I don't see the Cubans opening up their airspace to allow landings for this purpose, but it would hurt to ask.

I think the Vincent's contribution will be as a helicopter base. The helicopters will be able to distribute the supplies out where they are needed, the roads are blocked so trucks aren't going to be able to.

I think a C-5 makes that round trip (about 6,000 mile range I think), but you gotta have the right runway for it. I may be wrong about the range though.

The point is, this would be a logistical nightmare in a modern and undamaged country, so it is going to be beyond words hard in a place like Haiti.

The President of DR was the first head of state to arrive in Haiti post earth quake and offered virtually any help they could do and they weren't even tallying the cost. They had already accepted many Haitians into DR hospitals. The one thing they are not doing though is opening the border, and I think that is sort of understandable.

The sad thing about this quake is Haiti had rounded a corner the past couple of years. Haitian President Duval, who'd previously served one term, stayed in the country working with international aid organizations in increasing educational opportunities and decreasing crime (which fell to a fraction of historical norms) and ran for reelection rather than moving to Paris or Miami as past Presidents had done. Gangs that plagued Port Au Prince had been rounded up and imprisoned. Corruption was being prosecuted vigorously.

Although many would have expected Haiti to fall into violence by now, the images we've seen show a people helping each other amid their own grief and desperation. Surely there will be outbreaks caused by desperation as the injured and healthy alike start to feel the effects of dehydration and hunger, but hopefully that can be ameliorated as distribution of food, water, and shelter begins. Unfortunately, most roads were heavily damaged and covered with wreckage, making efforts that much harder.

The USS Carl Vinson is expected to arrive today. The flight deck will be filled with helicopters to ferry in food and and equipment since the port is in ruins and roads in and out of the port are too damaged to allow trucks to pass for now.

Several other military ships, including a Navy hospital ship sailed for Haiti within a couple hours of the earthquake.

Took days to get relief into the Gulf Coast, despite having paved roads all the way with equipment and supplies half a days drive away and plenty of warning about the hurricane. Haitians are getting water and food in less time than the first person in New Orleans did.

* Republicans belive that helping a country with a handful of abused women is worth 9 years of trouble, blood and death of 1000s of Americans and "spending" (but not "wasting" according to Triv) over $9 trillion American dollars is all "great policy"??

* Mike defended repeatedly that "Iraq was a mess" (but apparently Haiti is not) despite proven facts that Saddam actually controlled all the borders, prevented insurgents (except Bush), Iraqis had all basic public services and culture, and olypic team, and Iraq was not total daily Chaos and death
- Fact: The Bush invasion killed over 100,000 women and children which is thousands of times more than Saddam

* Mike admitted "..that is what we do, we help Americans er, I mean -- the World, and we always have.." He is exactly right that Republicans help the World
- but only if they can help themselves first by removing all accounting, arrange no-bid cash flow to your own corporations, and start moving the $trillions in cash far away from supervision to be more easily looted -
and NEVER help Americans as Republicans unanimously denied and REFUSED in anger both the "American Rebuilding and Recovery Act" and the "America's Healthcare Plan" because they truly HATE Americans and actually prove to really believe in America LAST!!

Agreed. Most effective way to stabalize the situation until they can clear the rubble to get to the places of need. Inundate them with water and snack bars.

Haitian orphans rushed to new homes abroad

Port-au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) -- Slashing red tape or ignoring ordinarily required paperwork, officials in the United States and the Netherlands have cleared the way for scores of Haitian orphans to leave their earthquake-ravaged homeland, according to officials from the two countries.

All of the children had adoptions pending with prospective parents in the two countries before Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude quake, and government officials said paperwork was expedited or put on hold to make transfers happen on an emergency basis.

300 children have pending adoption cases with American families. Six children arrived in Florida Sunday night, met by their adoptive parents with hugs and tears of happiness.
