Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Mark McGwire finally came clean, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998. McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade. "I wish I had never touched steroids. It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era."

In other news... the sky is blue, air is good and rain is wet.

Film at 11.

The sky is blue?

When did that change?

Shocked and appalled.

In other news today, a bear just confessed to shitting in Yellowstone park.

Who?

You're better off not asking what's in a Big Mac.

Palin on FOX and now this! The world truly is as mysterious and unpredictable as Condi Rice pointed out.

and the cities of the world are in flames....no...who cares

No shit! WHat was he the last one to realize it.

"Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era."

He is lying. He is weathly beyond his wildest dreams by playing during that era and is somewhat insulated by the fact that many other players are guilty of the same so his use isn't as magnified as it could be.

i'd feel better about McGwire if this admission wasn't essentially forced by circumstances.

"Baseball is really different now it's been cleaned up," McGwire said. "The commissioner and the players' association implemented testing and they cracked down, and I'm glad they did."

they haven't done shit. They have been testing for quite a while and despite that, the only way we ever know a player used steriods is when they ADMIT it rather than a test to reveal it.

More bullshit hypocrisy. This is all about his desire to get into the Hall of Fame.

Lying about is isn't working to get him in so I guess he is trying the truth for a change.

McGwire must be another run of the mill Lib, that needed somebody to tell him to do the right thing.

"they haven't done shit. They have been testing for quite a while and despite that, the only way we ever know a player used steriods is when they ADMIT it rather than a test to reveal it."

Huh? Why was Manny Ramirez suspended last year then? He still says he wasn't taking steriods.

sully,

you are right, I know a few have been caught. but not in enough cases.

This is all about his desire to get into the Hall of Fame.

Nail meet head. And this is just proven by that whole, "I wish I hadn't played in the steroid era" statement.

Complete horse shit and an obvious attempt to get in the Hall.

Just goes to show how little "Congressional Hearings" are interested in the truth.

Gets called before it because of "past activites" and gets away with an I'm Not Here To Talk About The Past statement??

Makes you wonder what, if anything, happens next.

Right.

Loh

Shocked and appalled.

Steroids have been part of sports since the 60's. The only people 'shocked' are those who pretended not to know, or were too stupid to realize it.

Remember dwight stone talking about them in 1968? Or the East German womens team that looked like men in the 80s? Or Bill Romanowski and 'the Boz' in football in the 90's. Or weight lifting for decades....Or the Tour de France for decades?

Steroids weren't even banned in baseball. Who was 'fooled'?????

And BTW if they weren't banned, nor do we know who took them, to cry about it is childish. As A Rod proved, you can't tell who took them. Put an asterisk by them all!!!!!

"I wish I had never played during the steroid era."

Translation: It's the era's fault that I took steroids, not my own.

It's rather pathetic to see an adult be so unable to admit his own stupid decisions.

Mark McGwire is a piece of crap. So is Andy Pettite, Barry Bonds, and Sammy Sosa.

Aw Mark, say it ain't so.

Well I'll be. Yeah right...pffffttt.

I remember he had the body of Barny Fife with the arms of the Incredible Hulk.. of course I only saw him on teevee and we know that adds 10lbs.

Only a republican thought he was on the up and up. The same crowd that thinks Ahhhhhhnuld beefed up on natural.

These guys make money on their stats. The lure of steroids was being bigger, faster, better than the other guy, thus make more money.
Enforcement of the ban was designed to be easy to "beat" because the "wow" factor the stats generated made stars of the athletes and more money for the teams and the spot in general.

Did anyone NOT know that he was taking them?

Back in 1890's the first Pro Ballplayer was accused of taking Drugs to enhance his performance. This particular Player had a doctor inject him with blood from a Monkey thinking that It would make him stronger. An Baseball Players through out History have taken ever advantage they could.

Up until the 1940's the major leagues kept Blacks and Latino players out. Could Mr. Ruth have hit as many homers or Ty Cobb steal that many bases with the leagues open to all of the players??????

In the 1950's The Yankees and most other teams were popping pills like crazy to play better, The League raised the mound to help the Pitchers, when they won to much the Mound was lowered to aid the hitters, all is BS.........Enjoy the game an quit Moralizing this shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

CEL-
The stars must be in alignment because I pretty much agree with you in #25.

I'm shocked, I tell you, shocked!!!!!

the same suckers that bought in
on all the steroid-laced home run frenzies
of the past twenty years
are the same ones who creamed their pants
during operation shock and awe
and anytime some chickenhawk comes on foxnews
and puffs up his patriotic breast
and threatens annihilation
on some third world country
in the name of freedumb...

when it comes down to it
the valued image of an american man
is that of a pumped up weenie--
it shows in what the average american values
in their entertainment
and in their politics
and in their dealings with others.

Another disappointment.

I don't think he will see the Hall of Fame.

Didn't he lie to Congress??

Goddamn Celery, good post. I don't agree with it, but good post. See, there is a whole world of greatness out there, if you just quit thinking about FOX news all the time.

Hank Aaron just moved another 20' higher on my pedestal.

the moral of the story is that major league baseball is on a par with world wrestling. if you bet on it you are a total fool. for entertainment purposes only. it aint real

Gee, what happened to the good old days when players just stayed out all night drinking, smoking and carrousing??

Craig Counsell named best player of steroid era:

Didn't he lie to Congress??

Lying to the liars, how awful!. lol

roger maris is STILL the season leader in dingers

and hammerin hank is STILL the career leader..

just like I said at the time.

at least the babe did it on beer, hotdogs and pussy

beer, hotdogs, and pussy

ah yes...those were the days....

this is about as shocking as finding out Liberace was gay

or......
that Pete Rose bet on baseball games

in the style of the immortal "Wildman" of Cincinnati ..

Stan Musial forever
Mark McGwire never

Is McGwire going to give back the money he "earned" through fraud?

I regret having played during the betting era. Now can I get in the Hall?
