ProPublica: One would think that the best candidate for a $15.9 million stimulus contract for environmental cleanup and monitoring might not be a company fined for dumping a toxic stew of pollutants at the same site. But one would be wrong, at least according to the federal government, which awarded the no-bid job to Boeing in July, reports the new investigative-reporting outfit California Watch Boeing's environmental rap sheet features a $471,000 fine from a regional California water-quality board in 2007 for 79 pollution violations involving toxic wastewater streaming into the Los Angeles River.

Wow. Are you an American?

Isn't this like the fox watching the hen house??

Who is Boeing's Lobbyist?

Oh--would that be Tom Daschle's wife??

I wonder what they'll charge to make their Mexican Border electronic fence actually work. It cost $1 billion. Boeing "assumed" standard commercial cameras and radar components would work in the rain and sand storms. They don't.

Make the taxpayer pony up for another go at it.

$15 million is chicken feed compared to what the People's Republic of South Carolina gave them to open shop there.

15 million dollars will not cover the Boeing executive bonuses and pay raises this year. They will need more before we hear the end of this story.

The article isn't clear about when the contract was awarded, so there are two possible responses, based on the timeline:

1. Before November 2008: BushCo handing out rewards to his favorite war profiteers.

2. After November 2008: Your stimulus dollars hard at work, saving jobs and building a green economy!

Primary Recipient

BOEING COMPANY, THE

Amount

$15,875,000.00

Award Date

7/31/2009

Not very complicated if you read the article.

Corporate welfare is killing America.

Oh so thoughtful spud NOT!!!!!!

Read the article dude, it doesn't even say WHEN the pollution occurred. The picture says is dated 1963, then the article cites a fine for pollution in 2007. So which is it???

Why don't you just bankrupt them and buy all our planes form airbus???? It's so easy being a partisan hack, you don't need to use your head!

Cleaning up pollution from half a century ago, from when it was standard practice to dump by products, is not a story, it's a piss poor job of sensationalism....

Agreed the headline is a bit disingenuous, according to the article...

The pollution at the site stems from rocket engine testing and nuclear power development at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory. The cleanup does not, as far as one can tell from the article, seem to involve Boeing's water violations, but Boeing does now operate the lab [4], which it co-owns with NASA.

So the pollution Boeing has been awarded a no bid contract to clean up may not be theirs (or all theirs anyways) but the fact remains that Boeing has already polluted the site in manner that recklessly disregarded human health and safety.

Ergo awarding a Big Polluter a Big Contract to be a Big Cleaner Upper seems ludicrous.

K?

The polluting started back in the late fifties but it didn't stop then numbnnuts.

The pollution has been ongoing almost up to the the present day.

Be Well.

In a way it's kind of an honor to have a stalker. It shows that I have reduced a blathering idiot to a blatant blathering idiot with no sense of personal dignity.

Keep it up, Let-U-Spray. Each time, you are really praising and worshiping me -- my ability to get under your skin with mere words.

bow down, Sprayer. Beg for your cracker.

I did not think it was possible to be more stupid than Let-U-Spray (spud excepted) but now I have to rethink that.

Toothless? What do you know about Taiwan? And dental care? It is comparable to the U.S. That can only mean you live in Appalacia-Pennsylvania, and your father pulls teeth with a pair of pliers. (that chawin' tobacco has a lot of sugar)

I'll bet you can spit 10 feet without opening your mouth, cool guy.

Mail order brides? From Taiwan? Too much stupidity to address on a blog.

That's why he's in Taiwan? Right now I am scarfing up stimulus money from Obamanation.

Yep, this is where it goes. Shovel-ready into my investment portfolio.

As usual you got it wrong. Welfare is killing America.

Welfare is killing America.

Welfare (not including the corporate kind) is less than 10% of the federal budget.

The pollution at the site stems from rocket engine testing and nuclear power development at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory. The cleanup does not, as far as one can tell from the article, seem to involve Boeing's water violations, but Boeing does now operate the lab [4], which it co-owns with NASA.

With that in mind, don't you just love the headline?

I'm in the wrong line of work I tell ya...

That was my point, the article is so poorly written you have no idea the validity of the accusation.

I am highly against industrial pollution and there a good case of it here in NY and PA. It seems GE has dumped PCP's over decades in water discharge, which has polluted or rivers. It would be a crime for them to be paid to clean up their mess. Same with Boeing.

However the story uses one example to 'prove' that BA guilty of whatever they accuse them of. Doesn't prove a thing, except to those willing to 'bite'.

Hey spud read up dude....

Boeing told California Watch that it is committed to the cleanup and has made significant progress, and noted that NASA and the Department of Energy also share responsibility in the effort. A Department of Energy spokeswoman told California Watch that Boeing has the expertise to do the work and a good track record of working with the agency.

You think they are playing that???? Ask the tighties how much of health care goes to lawyers...

Tort reform my ass!
but they'll sure tout it like its the major reason our health care is so high.

Poor Vernon. First he gets so fucking old he has to buy a wife, then when she arrives in the mail she's a fucking hermaphrodite dog. And she can't cook. Yes, poor Vernon.

Why is the dr left got such a hard on for attacking corporations, and giving the gov a pass????

Giving government a pass?

Have you ever actually read any of Spud's posts?

Evar?

Let's reverse the question, why are rtards so commited to bashing poor people and sucking up the elites who overly influence the system in their favor?

Are you all just a bunch of bootlicks?

Ayn Rand-reading, raw power-worshipping sycophants?

Why so you idealise wealth inequality as being somehow healthy for a society?

Wot part of "allowing a corporate polluter a no bid contract to clean up an area they had previously polluted is dumb" are you not getting here?

noted that NASA and the Department of Energy also share responsibility in the effort.

Yeah, cos NASA co-owns the site with Boeing and the DoE is responsible for tasking a responsible outfit with the job.

You have a problem with giving financial aid to a fellow citizen down on his luck but you have no problem with coporate pollution being cleaned up on the taxpayer dime.

Damn, no wonder people just laugh now when a conservative tries claiming the mantle of "fiscal conservative".

Be Well.
