Cash-strapped Hawaii can't afford the $1 million cost of an election to replace a congressman who is stepping down next month to run for governor, interim Chief Elections Officer Scott Nago said. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, a Democrat who has served for 19 years, will resign Feb. 28 for the gubernatorial run.

If Hawaii actually elects this guy as Governor then it deserves to be bankrupt.

And what happens to that bulletproof majority for the Dems? Maybe we can count on a government being deadlocked?

This is just partisan politics by Linda Lingle and the state republicans who screwed up the budget here with poor management.

1 million dollars is a drop in the bucket for the state budget, besides, I'm betting the feds will fund it anyway on constitutional grounds.

As for Niel Abercrombie, he is very popular here in Hawaii and shoe in for the governor here. Hawaii democrats are not about to get burn't again by a Bush supporter.

You pubbies don't like it, but so what, Hawaii is still better off then most states thanks to the liberals, not the gay old republicans.

pubbies???? you mean like the naughty hairs?

it seems your search for a derogatory name for republicans has hit a brick wall.

you short and curly hairs dont like it but.....

Hawaii is still better off then most states thanks to the liberals, not the gay old republicans.

It's not this guy's fault that the state of Hawaii didn't prepare financially for special elections.

The attitude that's gotten us into the troubles we're in. "A million here, a million there and pretty soon you're talking real money".

the state republicans who screwed up the budget here with poor management.

Theres one Republican in the Senate, and six in the House of Reps there. 7 total Republicans out of a combined 75 members, and the financial responsibilty of the state is all the "pubbies" fault? Hahahahah! Fuckin' Hhahahahahah!

I can't stop laughing...

Eat your frozen heart out sniper. Ahahahahah!

Ya, it is kinda rotten here today. 67 and no wind.

Theres one Republican in the Senate, and six in the House of Reps there.

That's the US federal politicians, americanlast. Now would you tell me what that has to do with the state budget?

BTW...The last time Hawaii had a republican in the US Senate was when we were first admitted to the union.

The state has money. That particular budget does not...because generally it doesn't need it. So, it will get special funding. Unless my conservative friends are suggesting a million extra dollars should just have been left in the coffers of that agency to sit there in the super rare instance a special election is needed... So, how is this news?

Another Liberal Dem state with zero fiscal responsibility circling the drain...ha-ha-ha!

But that's not the point. He was elected to do a job and made a promise. If he wants to further his political career rather than do the job he was elected to, let him do it on his own dime.

It's not like he has to resign for health or other reasons.

ax the rich
Feed the Poor

That's what we are all hoping for. Who needs them, we are all richer without them. Besides, their private jets are stinkin' up the place.

But that's not the point. He was elected to do a job and made a promise.

Neil has done a great job for as long as I can remember. He's not like Palin. He resigned to take on a greater challenge for Hawaii not write a book and become a TV celebrity.

If he wants to further his political career rather than do the job he was elected to, let him do it on his own dime.

Politicians leave office to run for another office all the time. I can't recall voters ever making an issue out of it by punishing that politician. Seems like a non-issue to me. If this guy would rather be governor of his state than stay in Congress, and the voters want him in that office, the special election is worth the expense.

I guess these State reps and Senators are all federal, eh, Ringo?

I guess these State reps and Senators are all federal, eh, Ringo?

No, it doesn't work that way idiot.

What you said was, "Theres one Republican in the Senate, and six in the House of Reps there. 7 total Republicans out of a combined 75 members, and the financial responsibilty of the state is all the "pubbies" fault? Hahahahah! Fuckin' Hhahahahahah!".

What I said was, "That's the US federal politicians, americanlast. Now would you tell me what that has to do with the state budget?

BTW...The last time Hawaii had a republican in the US Senate was when we were first admitted to the union.".

Oh, and BTW last time I checked, there is 435 members of the House, not 75.

So, a: You don't know what you are talking about, and b: they were all democrats so, you were wrong about that too.

Federal Representatives and Senators have nothing to do with the budget, at any rate. Don't try and bullshit an old bullshitter.

Hawaii has mostly democrats in office. That is why we have lower crime rates, better standard of living, less unemployment, a cleaner environment, and less ignorant republicans screwing up the place then the rest of the states.

Recently a huge influx of rich republicans took up residence in the west Hawaii, on the Big Island, consequently the only areas in the state with major budget problems is Hawaii County, or the Big Island, and Maui County (where Linda Lingle was mayor. Go figure.

Our state budget problems with the special election are mainly because the rest of the country is doing so poorly (the real trickle down effect for Hawaii. We are a tourist state and not a manufacturing state and we are effected by the global slowdown as well. If you want to blame that on the democrats, by all means go ahead, but we do by law, require a balanced budget (which is something California and a lot of other states could learn a lesson from), so although the state coffers are empty, they are are not in the red. We Democrats are at least more fiscally responsible then your Republican counter parts in the red states.

You're the one who claimed it was all the "pubbies" fault, Ringo. I merely pointed out that the Hawaii STATE legislature is 90+% Democrats. You are the one who tried to claim I was referencing federal politicians. I never . There are 75 members of Hawaii's STATE legislature, of which 7 are Republicans, and somehow, it's their fault that Hawaii's got a money problem. Yeah. Riiiiiiiight...you're not nearly as intelligent as I had previously given you credit for.

American1st...Apparently, I am as confused as you are. Sorry. I misunderstood your post.

My point about Lingle is that, she and her republican CABINET, have vetoed every tax bill that crossed her desk and quit a few other bills that we the people, through our legislature have passed. She is the veto queen and has made a lot of foolish calls that both cost the state more money and reduced tax revenue as a result of ignorance and just plain right wing manipulating just like her buddy GW Bush did.

A classic example is the Hawaii Superferry. Lingle railroaded a bill through the legislature to get the ferry going by making an end run around the states environmentalists. Hawaii has a very powerful environment lobby here, thank God, or it would be a dump like California. That Lingle end run was later found to be illegal. The state wasted millions of dollars to accommodate the ferry in the harbors.

I personally was in favor of the ferry and it would have operated profitably bringing in much need revenue to the state. The problem was her illegal Bushism approach of thinking she had executive power to circumvent the law at will, which led to a court decision that the ferry was operating illegally until an environmental impact study was completed. This stupid and irresponsible executive action not only wasted millions of tax payers dollars, but also bankrupt the Superferry company.

Like I said this is just one example.

The democrats also passed a bill that would increase taxes on the rich who were using Hawaii as a home but claiming they were residents of another state like Nevada which has no income tax, and eliminate tax loopholes for out of state multimillion dollar investments in Hawaii property and real estate.

She has continued to support huge development projects that increased infrastructure expenses to the tune of many millions without plans to increase tax revenue. Most of these projects are rife with kickback schemes that benefit no one but the rich developers and her wealthy friends.

Now, of course she does not want to release emergency funds for a special election to replace a democrat in congress because she is more concerned about partisan politics on the federal level then the states right to representation in congress.

This is just partisan politics by Linda Lingle and the state republicans who screwed up the budget here with poor management.

when Rush talked about the good care he got..radicals here jumped all over telling us about the sociaist health care in hawaii,.

and NOW we see they cant afford a special election..but IM SURE those two things are completly different arent they????? yeah sure they are

ANd take a tour of the states that are doing better than others and then cross reference them with states run by republicans....and get back to us.

Hey, aflak is that you on the new CNN ad?

If you don't know aflak, you don't know quack.

BTW... Lingle could find the funds it if there was any chance at all that a republican could get elected.
