The New Jersey Senate voted Thursday against legalizing same-sex marriage. The defeat, by a vote of 20-14, likely ends any chance that the state Legislature approves gay marriage soon.

This is where the fight should be, in the states.

Poor Diablo. Well, you can always move to New Hampshire.

NJ has too many Catholics to ever vote for gay marriage. I am suprised one of the Senators from Middlesex County sponsored this bill. Lot of Muslims and Catholics in Middlesex.

Seperate but equal.

Someday the bigot fearing pols will realize their error.

Which one of you wants to wear the veil, Jimmy?

Sha sha sharia!

Sha sha sharia!

My Sharia

The Knack

Jimmy, how is it separate but equal? Do you also push for women being able to be drafted in a draft, so that they are not separate but equal too? NO one is separate but equal when everyone has equal opportunity to marry a woman if they are a man, and a man if they are a woman. Everyone has the exact same rights.

It is a conditional right. It is not an inherent right. You enjoy the benefits of the "right" when you meet the conditions of the "right" thus why single individuals do not meed the conditions. They have the same ability to marry someone of the opposite sex, however they choose not to.

So it's a non-issue. Right?

The Legislature's own committee, tasked with monitoring the civil union law, has already determined that civil unions are not being treated as equal to marriages in New Jersey.

The Senate is just passing the buck to the courts, who will force them to remedy the inequalities the Legislature itself has documented.

How do you explain it in Massachusetts? After all, it has the 2nd largest Catholic population per capita. The population numbers are from 1990 Census but the the percentages haven't really changed.

Rhode Island 633,427 63.12%
Massachusetts 2,961,359 49.22
Connecticut 1,374,747 41.82
New Jersey 3,189,315 41.26
New York 7,280,488 40.47
Louisiana 1,369,154 32.44
Wisconsin 1,554,278 31.77
Illinois 3,611,033 31.59
Pennsylvania 3,675,250 30.93
New Mexico 467,356 30.85

Polls have shown strong support for the civil rights of gay people among Catholics, the laity, that is....

They have the same ability to marry someone of the opposite sex, however they choose not to.

Yea, they can marry whoever they want, as long as the state agrees to it.

If you live 10 feet from the border between a 'pro' state and a 'con' state, you can achieve moral absolution just by walking 20 feet (and then loosing it again by walking back 20 ft).

Fuck all that 'this is a state issue' crap. This is a national issue and there needs to be a constitutional admendment that says this;

'Inasmuch as the US gov't is not involved with the private spiritual beliefs and practices of it's citizens, the US gov't is not obliged to control, conspire, coerce or consider to whom an individual citizen, who is an adult human, may consider to be a moral life mate, as long as that choice is another adult human.

No prohibitions shall be placed on that choice except those that are placed by the individual's conscience'.

Points:

1. Civil unions with same rights as heterosexuals-
yes; marriage--no.
2. Should be left to each state to decide.
3. With time and the lowering of our standard of
living people will be more concerned about
more mundane issues such as putting food
on the table and feeding their children
then this and other PC issues which exist in
a materialistic decadent society---where
people have the time for all kinds of mischief.

This ain't a state issue. We are the United States of America. That means freedom for all race, gender, creed, sexual orientation, whatever it is that makes individuals individual (and doesn't cause undue harm unto others). That's who we need to be, that's what makes us stronger and better than any other place. Enough of the marginalization.

COMMONSENSE:
I think that your numbers are accurate regarding people who identify themselves as Catholic, but many of them are not embracing all of the Catholic doctrine. If they did, at least 49% of the Mass. population would be pro-life. (haha)
I know many "Catholics" that embrace abortion, gay marriage, and fornicate regularly.
It got shot down here in NJ b-cuz the liberal pols are afraid of getting voted out in a growing conservative movement. Christie(R) beat Corzine (D) for Governor, and more liberal seats will be lost in November 2010. NJ is waking up!!!!!

I was wondering why you were condemning yourself.

...and we're usually so fucking independent. dammit. was it because of Leviticus 18:22? because a few chapters elsewhere there are commandments about the sacrifice of goats and what to do with a leaky penis, so i guess our state senators should enact those into law, too. that would be great: watch 'em cut a goat's head off live on c-span, and let one loose in the name of Azazel... ridiculous in our civilized society, right? exactly.

Not so "civilized". President Obama never had any intention of removing DOMA or repealing DADT. Second class all the way.

Does it dawn on you that it is precisely in times like these that marriage rights and responsibilities are very important to families?

Oh, you only care about your family. I get it.

Interesting that a Blue state is acting Red. Guess the last ten months has some dems feeling very uncomfortable. It's one thing to be a dem, but being considered a flaming liberal is 'not good for business'.

...AND, being aligned with obama&Co is definitely Flaming liberal.

The courts in Massdachusetts made gay marriage legal.

Furthermore, I would say these numbers have changed. There are a lot more latinos in NJ than there were in 1990. Granted a lot of them are illegal but ACORN makes sure they all vote

"There are a lot more latinos in NJ than there were in 1990."

With all the posts regarding race or religious affiliation as the barometer for passing these kinds of laws -- imagine the changes that will take place in a few decades when muslims are the majority.

Portugal, Argentina and Mexico City have legalized same-sex marriage recently. It's hard to believe the USA lags in offering up equality to those highly-catholic nations/city.

Sadly, it's the American Taliban - complete with catholics, evangelicals, mormons et al screaming at every step towards equality - that control the conversation simply because they scream the loudest.

Equality supporters need to employ the same strategies that casinos use to enter markets: keep putting it on the ballot and outspend your opponent. Eventually, the voter tires of it and votes 'em in. It finally happened here for casinos in Ohio in 2009 after numerous ballot failures.

This doesn't have anything to do with all that crap. This is about an individuals freedoms as a soveriegn citizen of what used to be a country dedicated to freedom.

We have collectively adopted the idea that the state or the fed somehow has a say in the matter. They don't. This along with abortion and several other issues is an individuals perogative. Gov't doesn't have a say in the matter, regardless of what the bible or the council of trent or the poop or the president or the corporation says.

It is non of their business.

Here, Here, lippy!

And on another note, I am celebrating the sixth year of my Big Fat Legal Gay Marriage With Full State And Private Business Benefits and all the other 1000 legal marriage rights other Gay couples cannot enjoy in their own states.

I must still ask you homophobe bigots out there;

Now that you know I've been legally married for 6 years, how has that destroyed your marriage?

Whhhhattttt???? It hasn't?????????

It's obvious that this isue is much more than a 'marriage issue' to you. It's about you having the right to VOTE AWAY the rights of people you don't like. And you are just getting started with us Gays. Who's rights are next?

If I were to guess it would be the muslims. We know how much you hate them.

Since you cannot point out how your marrige has been destroyed by my marriage I have one suggestion for you:

Mind your own fucking damn business!

Gay marriage is rather amusing if anything. I know when they say they are married they take it seriously but the majority of Americans think of it like a joke written on a bathroom wall that makes you laugh while you are taking a shit. Then you look over at the toilet paper dispenser and it says gay marriage license. Take One.
