Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Wednesday, January 06, 2010

Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) announced Wednesday that he won't seek re-election this year. Dodd, who has served in Congress since 1974, has trailed Republican challengers in recent polls even though Connecticut typically leans Democratic. Another Democratic senator, Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, announced yesterday that he will not run again.

Jeez, which sleezeball Democrat will the banking industry throw all their money at now? Good riddance.

The smart demorat's are abandoning the sinking ship now, in surprising numbers.

The all-but-assured Democratic nominee for governor in Michigan, Lt. Gov. John Cherry, ended his bid today. Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota announced he will not seek reelection this year. And now word from Colorado that the first term Democratic governor there is shying away from facing voters again in November.

blogs.abcnews.com

Man the lifeboats! SOS! LOL!

This calls for a toast!

not really

connecticut will not vote a republican right now.

that i know.

Kliff

They voted for Leiberman...

I'm sure an (R) won't win Fairfield county, but the rest of the state is possible (longshot at best but possible).

Voter turnout will probably have more to do with outcomes than popular sentiment.

"
Kliff

They voted for Leiberman..."

I'd just love to see Traitor Joe run now.
I doubt he will run for reelection in 2012.

One down, 99 to go. The day he leaves office will be a good day for America.

The smart demorat's are abandoning the sinking ship now, in surprising numbers.

Northeast leftist shit are easily startled, but they'll soon return.

And in greater numbers.

sheeple

they voted lieberman because he's basically a democrat.

and he had the democrat and minority republican support.

this time around he doesn't have the same democrat support as he did last time.

its goign to be a much tougher win this time.

and there aren't enough republicans in ct to get a republican in office.

Lieberman's a sociopath and a narcissist, if he had any faint thoughts of retirement I doubt he would've put up such a healthcare stink.

Esp. if retirement means giving up the Aetna dole.

Besides, announcing retirement results in zero liability politics. They are free to vote for whatever they want (i.e. amnesty this spring) and constituents be damned (not like we really stopped them before).

Kliff,

I am inclined to agree. Didn't they have a repub (and criminal) governor in the near past?

Unlikely, but not impossible.

sheeple

they do have a republican governer who was a criminal and his replacement has been extremely center of the road because she knows she can't play partisan in a state full of democrats.

remember under her a republican governer gay marriage was legalized in connecticut.

she knows she has to keep her conservative ideals out of social policy.

senators happen to be playing the national stage and can't keep their partisan beliefs off the table. Its a much harder role to fill with a republican, especially in today's climate.

"The smart demorat's are abandoning the sinking ship now, in surprising numbers"

Actually Dodd was way down in the polls and I think the DNC asked him not to run. This will assure a dem takes his place. They may lose his senority, but they won't lose his seat.

The smart demorat's are abandoning the sinking ship now, in surprising numbers.

The smart Democrats in the White House and the DNC are nudging out Dodd so that they have a better chance to win in Connecticut, a state that leans Democratic and should be hospitable territory for them.

oh and the republican criminal won because he was running under a failure of a democrat governor.

"Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, one of the state's most popular Democrats, plans to announce his candidacy for Dodd's seat Wednesday, a highly placed Connecticut Democrat told CNN.

Blumenthal's candidacy could increase the likelihood that Democrats will retain the Senate seat in November's midterm election.

Dodd's news conference comes a day after another Democratic senator, Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, announced that he will not seek re-election in November.

Dorgan's seat, unlike Dodd's, was considered safe for Democrats, who are trying to hold on to their 60-seat filibuster-proof Senate majority."

Dems were worried about Dodd's seat if he waited to retire. Now that he's announced, that seat is at least as safe as Dorgon's.

Republicans should be more worried about not gaining many seats at all as the economy revives somewhat and Tea Partiers purify the Party by going after some seats of their own.

I don't care who wins, I'm just happy that P.O.S. is leaving.

Blumenthal is well known in connecticut.

I should run for the seat as an independant ;)

you think i could win?

i've been a CT local for 20 years.

Meh, Spud's thread covers a broader spectrum.

www.drudge.com

Be Well.

He couldn't possibly get re-elected, but the damage is already done.

"not very informed and not accurate for sure"

accept i live in connecticut and know the atmosphere of the voting public.

Peter Schiff will win.

One weasel out. Anybody that thinks that is not good for America, is an idiot. Now if Vermont can elect someone that is not a crook, that will be even better.

Who's a crook from Vermont? Sanders? I don't think so. Welch? Doubt it. Leahy?

Odd comment.

personally we need to mandate term limits on congress and the senate.

our system allows the weaseling of politicians

Amen.

the problem is that most of the time politics is game of name recognition.

and without term limits useless fucks on both sides of the fence use their name recognition to stay in office until they are being wheeled in to vote on bills instead of making an active thought out decision.

This calls for a toast!

Goodbye Mr. Dodd--a pox on your house for the damage you have done to this country.

How do yo explain the 14 republicans that are planning to retire?

"so much for that thread yesterday about how so many gop'rs are retiring and how dems wont lose thier ass....."

Yeah, except it's the same as I said in that thread--who's to say these characters won't be replaced by similar (read: Democratic) characters?

"who's to say these characters won't be replaced by similar (read: Democratic) characters? "

Here's the early read:

I wonder how loud the whining will be when the Rs wake up on November 3rd and realize the WH, Senate, and House are all still controlled by Dems?

There wont be a Repub landslide ..... but I dont think the fillibuster proof Senate majority will survive.

agree prag and you can see that in my first post here this morning....NONE of the retirements means the other side will win..
instead its a real look into the real panic and fear of the left because they KNOW the end is near

AND SO because of that we get THIS from this president..

apnews.myway.com

wonder how loud the whining will be when the Rs wake up on November 3rd and realize the WH, Senate, and House are all still controlled by Dems?

#52 | Posted by Danforth at 2010-

you KNOW you dont really believe that but I understand..
dems believe that we on the right are too stupid to remember all the way into next november

and the economy will get better....and it would have gotten better if we had done nothing but expect dems to play that angle extensively which either side certainly would

differnce...dems believe again that we are just too damned stupid to understand all them facts n figures thingamabobs....

how much of a payout will turd get to retire and get out of the way?

"instead its a real look into the real panic and fear of the left because they KNOW the end is near"

HA!

Come on, Afk, maybe it points to the desperate hope of rightwingers/conservatives. You know, 'cause they keep saying stuff like "Now we're gonna get our Congress back!" : )

I know no such thing as your assertion. I know that politics will go on--that's all I can be sure of. People will continue to manipulate and be manipulated. I also won't be surprised if the 60-senator majority is decreased.

"you KNOW you dont really believe that but I understand.."

That Dems won't still control all three? I'd be willing to bet you.

"...dems believe that we on the right are too stupid to remember all the way into next november"

Too funny. Rs believe this November we'll all be too stupid to remember all the way to last November.

"and the economy will get better....and it would have gotten better if we had done nothing"

Riiiiiight. Tell us: what do you think would have happened if Dubya had inherited the mess Dubya left?

"dems believe again that we are just too damned stupid to understand all them facts n figures thingamabobs...."

What...like the Dow going DOWN during Dubya's reign, but UP during Obama's?!?

The way the liberals have done it in the past, is they sneak in and set the stage for huge problems with their bad ideas, then leave until the horrible results manifest. i.e., Clinton removing the firewall preventing the securitization of loans to entities which manifested itself as this new great depression. These cowards will bail out, wait for the health care disaster to manifest, then come in with "solutions". This is classic, don't be fooled.

Ann--That Clinton firewall was written by Phil Gramm a repub and master of disaster on that score.

Of course the Dems in charge now won't do anything to change the firewall or stop this disaster from occurring again.

As for the dems leaving--dropping out like dead flies--it is too early to know or predict what the heck is going to happen.

With this many 'retiring' though--the writing is on the wall--Obama is screwing up and the rats are jumping ship.

"With this many 'retiring' though--the writing is on the wall--Obama is screwing up and the rats are jumping ship."

So what does it mean that a lot of Republicans are also "retiring"?

doesn't sound like a good thing for the righties. Dodd's Dem replacement will be more popular than him.

"But let's add a little perspective here. Quick quiz: which party has more Senate retirements so far this campaign cycle, Democrats or Republicans? Follow-up question: which party has more House retirements so far this campaign cycle, Democrats or Republicans?

If Dems are "dropping like flies," the answer should be obvious. But it's not -- in both chambers, Republican retirements, at least for now, outnumber Democratic retirements.

In the House, 14 GOP incumbents have decided not to seek re-election, while 10 Democratic incumbents have made the same announcement. Does this mean Republicans are "dropping like flies"?

In the Senate, six Republican incumbents have decided not to seek re-election, while two Democratic incumbents have made the same announcement. Is this evidence of a mass Democratic exodus?

Among governors, several incumbents in both parties are term-limited and prevented from running again, but only three Democrats who can seek re-election -- Parkinson in Kansas, Doyle in Wisconsin, and Ritter in Colorado -- have chosen not to. For Republicans, the number is four -- Douglas in Vermont, Rell in Connecticut, Crist in Florida, and Pawlenty in Minnesota. (Update: the GOP number is five if we include Palin in Alaska.)

So, to review, Republican retirements outnumber Democratic retirements in the House, in the Senate, and among governors. The preferred Republican/media meme of the day doesn't match up well against reality."

Way too much Kool Aide. Completely disconnected from reality.

Yes, danni, the first step in rehabilitation is admitting the problem. Well done.

MATSOP @ #67

If only...

The sooner the republicans take back over the sooner we can put Chris Dodd in chains and a nice cold jail cell.

Dodd quit because he knew he couldn't win re-election and he is hoping to avoid an investigation into all his sleazy corrupt deals he got for himself.

And he'll be replaced by fellow Democrat Blumenthal. Bon apetit!

Which Conservative candidates are the drudge "conservatives" going to support and vote for. I expect the ones with (R) after their names. Much like aflac working so hard for RINO Mccain in 2008.

What will be interesting to see is about those seats the are retained by new dems: Will they just adhere to the party line (obama's) or will they be more careful not to anger their constituents [to have more than one term in office]?

Note that if was just Republicans unhappy with their voting Dodd & Co., would not be 'abandoning the ship'.

"What will be interesting to see is about those seats the are retained by new dems: Will they just adhere to the party line (obama's) or will they be more careful not to anger their constituents [to have more than one term in office]? "

Good question, but I find the implication interesting. How do you know (if this is what you meant) that those adhering to the party line (such as it is) are angering their constituents? I'm actually annoyed that the Dems have given up so much. (No public option--WTF?) But I'm more closely aligned with Bernie Sanders on this issue than with any other vocal politician.

Big Deal. Take the mask off one and put it on another as if that will change anything. If the U.S. hopes to survive, we must lop off both heads of the monster.

I imagine Dodd is heading over to the 'Democrat Politician Retirement System'....CEO of Fannie Mae.

I'd have to guess Barney Frank if the Dems retain a few seats in congress beyond 2010.

There are rumors abound that Dodd is going to take Timothy Geitner's position. I don't put too much faith in rumors but that's what I heard so he truly isn't retiring if the rumors prove true.
