Children whose parents refuse to let them be vaccinated for chickenpox are nine times as likely as vaccinated children to develop chickenpox that requires medical attention, researchers reported Monday.

Although the conclusion may seem self-evident, it reflects a growing problem with childhood immunizations, said epidemiologist Jason M. Glanz of Kaiser Permanente's Institute for Health Research in Denver, the lead author of the report in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Immunizations have been so successful, he said, that some parents are becoming more concerned about the risks of vaccines than they are about the illness.

"Vaccines are becoming victims of their own success," he said.

I got the shot.

So far, no chickenpox or reptoid hatchlings eating their way out of my chest.

Complete BS. Refusal is most often based on the fact the child has already had the Chickenpox.

Most of us are old enough to have lived through a policy of just a few early childhood vaccinations. This was sufficient. Now, children are being forced to be vaccinated throughout childhood for the Chickenpox.

First, did the vaccine work for any of you? Anyone not get the Chickenpox anyways?

Second, don't the vast majority get the Chickenpox at a very early age? You stay home from school for a few days and it's over.

Third, if they really wanted to address a problem, they would address the re-surfacing into shingles epidemic in old age.

For the benefit of all of us, someone please educate all of us on the requirement for Chickenpox vax throughout childhood.

You stay home from school for a few days and it's over.

After your get over your case of chickenpox, the virus remains latent in your nervous system for the rest of your life. It can reactivate later in life to make you particularly miserable. Herpesviruses... gifts that keep on giving.

if they really wanted to address a problem, they would address the re-surfacing into shingles epidemic in old age.

You do that by preventing infection in the first place, dumbass.

I'd ask for a link, but it's probably a waste of time.

Third, if they really wanted to address a problem, they would address the re-surfacing into shingles epidemic in old age.

If I remember correctly, the varicella vaccine was developed for that purpose-it was meant to be administered to adults as a booster to reduce shingles incidences through maintenance of immunity.

When and why they switched to giving it to children I'm not sure.
