An atheist group in the Irish Republic has defied a new blasphemy law by publishing a series of anti-religious quotations on its web site. Atheist Ireland says it will fight any action taken against it in court. The quotations include the words of writers such as Mark Twain and Salman Rushdie, but also Jesus Christ, the Prophet Muhammad and Pope Benedict XVI. The new law makes blasphemy a crime punishable by a fine of up to $35,000. The government says it is needed because the republic's 1937 constitution only gives Christians legal protection of their beliefs.

So what will the bible-thumpers decide on this one?

Will they side with the atheists against a law that they believe favors Islam, or wll they keep on hating atheists at all costs (including the cost of their own common sense).

George Carlin, 1999: "Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit!"

george carlin stopped being funny long before 1999....tell me the funny part of that rant....cause the dude was a comic...yet none of the above is comical

"none of the above is comical"

The painfully self-evident seldom is.

those that profess to believe in their soul about the invisible little man are an absolute riot. it doesnt get any funnier than that

"George Carlin ceased being funny long before 1999...."

I agree with that. He ceased being happy, too, If simple observation means anything.

tell me the funny part of that rant

The whole damn thing lol.

Wow. Zed can infer happiness or lack of same in others. How....god-like.

BTW, comedians don't always have to be funny. Or happy. Like most folks.

"How godlike....."

Nothing really. You learn amazing things by just paying attention.

Zed can infer happiness or lack of same in others.

All on the basis of whether or not you believe in his imaginary friends... strange, isn't it? This sentiment is echoed by many religious individuals, particularly those with an inclination toward fanaticism. In order to affirm the supremacy of their chosen myth and rationalize their utter lack of rationality, they deny the possibility that nonbelievers can find something as ubiquitous and universal as contentment.

It amounts to nothing more than a steaming pile of projection - the individuals making these claims may not be capable of finding happiness without god, but they should not presume to speak for others.

Holy Jesus Fucking Cunt Lips, can't the religious nuts back off just once?

wow kind of makes me wonder how zed was observing old georgie. did he have cameras in carlin's house? did he follow him around observing all his interactions with people?

Holy Jesus Fucking Cunt Lips, can't the religious nuts back off just once?

no doubt.. maybe we should start burning them at the stake?

I find it unlikely this law will survive Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

en.wikipedia.org

Article 9 Freedom of thought, conscience and religion

1. Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, and to manifest his religion or belief, in worship, teaching, practice and observance.

2. Freedom to manifest one's religion or beliefs shall be subject only to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of public safety, for the protection of public order, health or morals, or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.

worth repeating..

"Worth repeating....."

Only if you've got some sort of personal issue. Which you do. Just another observation.

"Holy Jesus Fucking Cunt Lips, can't the religious nuts back off just once?"

Those of us who are not religious nuts have been waiting for them to do that for millennia *.

* Note to religious nuts: More than six.

Zed can infer happiness or lack of same in others.

Was he holding one of those
NO JESUS NO PEACE
KNOW JESUS KNOW PEACE
signs?

"Ubiquitous and universal as contentment...."

I'm sure that's the way everyone is on Proxima Cetauri. On this planet, it's just what your mouth is saying this moment for reasons of it's own.

Only if you've got some sort of personal issue.

I imagine Legio is personally quite sick of sanctimonious evangelists pretending as if he (or she) would somehow benefit from superstition. Just another observation.

I imagine LEGIO can speak for himself---That is, unless he's a sort of Charlie MacCarthy puppet you operate---Which come to think, might explain a lot.

I imagine LEGIO can speak for himself

Sure. You don't hesitate to speak for others, so I figured I'd get in on the fun too.

On this planet, it's just what your mouth is saying this moment for reasons of it's own.

You seem to know very little of this planet or its inhabitants. Especially the ones who disagree with you.

Well, ZOMBIE---If you're having fun who could complain?

"You seem to know very little of this planet of it's inhabitants...."

How old are you?

How old are you?

Old enough to know when a habitual bullshitter is grasping at straws for lack of a point to make.

If you've got something to say, spit it out.

"Old enough...."

I think you just answered my question.

"Spit it out...."

You're a bright young man, ZOMBIE---You've already anticipated my point.

But if you'd like to deny you're either young or bright, you have the rest of the evening.

You've already anticipated my point.

Your point or your next attempt to dissemble? Regardless, I'm not going to have an argument with myself.

I told you. Pompous ass.

Carlin did what Carlin did. ALWAYS.
He held a mirror up and forced us to look at it. Sometimes it was funny. Sometimes it made you think.
If you have a problem with what you saw in that mirror it wasn't Georges fault.

The other night I ate at a real nice family restaurant. Every table had an argument going.
-----George Carlin-----

There are Irish atheists?

Leprechauns should give them all a few swift kicks in the fanny until they see the error of their ways.

Didn't Jesus heal all the leprechauns?

"Didn't Jesus heal all the Leprechauns....?"

The ones with leprosy, yes.

Trolling for Godot.

"Trolling for Godot...."

What can we say?---It's just a talent that you have.

Didn't Jesus heal all the Leprechauns....?"

He also gave cave fish sight. Then they saw each other, freaked out and died

""Didn't Jesus heal all the Leprechauns....?"

"The ones with leprosy, yes."

LOL

You ROCK, Zed!!

" can't the religious nuts back off just once?"

LOL

Let's review:

Threads are constantly put up criticizing Christianity.

Numerous members post insulting Christianity.

Seems to me it's not US who are the religious nuts!!!

So what? This is a blog, not the mainstream media. Non-theists are invisible there. Just how complete does the Christian ideological monopoly have to be before you stop whining?

Threads are constantly put up criticizing Christianity.

That wouldn't happen if there weren't an ample supply of material to post.

Threads are constantly put up criticizing Christianity.
Numerous members post insulting Christianity.
Seems to me it's not US who are the religious nuts!!!

I don't think it applies to you Lisa, but I see plenty of Christians doing the same thing to Muslims.

I don't think it applies to you Lisa

Yes it does. She's always on here talking about prophets, pedophiles, and prayers for Tosser's soul. It's rather funny. It becomes rather sad when you realize that the nonreligious aren't going around calling Jesus a fudgepacker yet Christians incessantly claim that the nonreligious are somehow intolerant. Plank in eye...

Null:

"So What?"

Hey, I really don't care. For the most part they make me laugh. Most of the time they shoot of their mouths before their brains are loaded, incorrectly interpreting, using quotes that don't fit their argument. I just laugh and try to correct them.

Furio called us "religious nuts" when in actuality, it's those who constantly use every opportunity to try and discredit Christianity by initiating all the threads, those who display hatred towards Christians so vehemently when unprovoked who are the religious nuts.

They're obsessed with it!! Lol

I have never seen so many people get so upset over something they don't even believe in! I don't bother posting on topics I don't believe in or couldn't care less about.

I just shake my head!! Lol

Zombie:

That's right. Non believers never steal, never lie, never commit murder, never commit adultery.

It's only done by religious folks!

*rolls eyes*

I did not ever call mohammed that. I challenge you to find a post where I did.

At least try and be a little honest Zombie!!

I was asked why I had agreed with part of someones post and put up their own teachings to back up part of it.

I have questioned their beliefs, asking questions thatwould show contradicted their teachings.

People ask questions about my faith, I'm honored to answer them.

That's hardly intolerance.

Tosser is a coward for reasons that have nothing to do with his faith.

Is that true, Lisa? Tell me it isn't so.

I have never seen so many people get so upset over something they don't even believe in!

I take it you must steer clear of the global warming discussions... :)

Non believers never steal, never lie, never commit murder, never commit adultery.

It's more about the obnoxious things that get done in the name of unique religious laws like "not suffering a witch to live".

I did not ever call mohammed that. I challenge you to find a post where I did.

As I recall, it was dumped awhile ago. You're not the one who generally posts that stuff, though... that's true.

I have questioned their beliefs, asking questions thatwould show contradicted their teachings.

Contradictions within their teachings? Every religion is teeming with those, and every religion goes to extreme lengths to smooth them over.

So Lisa says it isn't so. She has no intolerance towards Islam.

I have questioned their beliefs, asking questions thatwould show contradicted their teachings.

I can do that all the time. Rather than explain, you accuse me of misreading the text then leave so I can't respond.

Again....making comments only being slightly informed.

I used quotes from their own teachings.

I never called him a pedo, in fact I don't believe that's what it was. I would use a different term.

If you would have checked hours later....the dump was removed.

The muslims here bait people and then flag their comments.

Tosser was warned to stop from what I have been told by the boss.

Isn't there another 9 year old somewhere you could insult their parent by calling him a racist??

Ray, years ago I have proven your comments to be incorrect. But you keep going over the same things, not even trying to hear anything other than what you want to believe whether it's the truth or not!!

Why keep going over it?

When I questioned Tosser here, he never offered anything but insults and numerous times he contradicted himself.

He wont respond.

I have....numerous times.

Now....Iron Chef is on.

Have a wonderful evening!

Ray, years ago I have proven your comments to be incorrect. But you keep going over the same things, not even trying to hear anything other than what you want to believe whether it's the truth or not!!

You did not! Time after time you twist and spin then blame me for it. Case in point about your idea Jesus was a man of peace. This passage and a whole lot more say Jesus was vindictive and intolerant. You block out anything you don't want to know.

41The Son of man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers,

"Tosser" does not exist. Tosser is merely an avatar on the DR, behind which hides some psychotic anti-american egomaniacal slimeball muslim (Think Tokyo Rose, Axis Sally, Lord Haw-Haw). Most of us are avatars on here- - blog personas which allow anonymous outrageous behavior - any names come to mind?

Come on, Gogo, return the ball, can't you, once in a way?

absolutely.. I do tire of bloviating, self righteous turds acting as if they have some personal deity in their pocket ready to do bidding upon their command. Just because I don't believe doesn't mean that you hold a higher station due to your personal belief in a fairy tales Zed.

Sounds bad. Nonetheless a promotion over a few other things I've been called today. Thanks.

Maybe if Christians stopped doing things like passing laws that fine you 35 grand for not believing their crazy storys, Atheists wouldn't get so bent out of shape.

Athiests have no place in Ireland. They shouldmove to the UK

All countries that have a sponsored or state endorsed religion are despicable. How can we hope to encourage nations around the world to be tolerant of other peoples and their belief systems when our own "mother country" (I hate that term) is the worst long-time offender? Britain should have a rebirth of disestablishmentarianism.

I remeber being in the train station in Limerick and seeing verse from Mark on the wall with a big painting of Jesus. I took a photo and e-mailed it to a few of my Jewish co-workers at work just for kicks

Athiests have no place in Ireland.

They're not going anywhere, and there will only be more of them as time goes on. Get used to it.

I don't consider Britain our "mother country". 99.99% of Americans wouldn't believe that the way the Brits are governed has anything to do with us. If anyone every tried to argue with me that Americans are hypocritical because we claim to be in favor of a policy that the Brits contradict, I would think that person is insane. It isn't like we are Canada, where the queen is technically still their head of state.

Oh and George Carlin was not funny at all late in his career. I don't know when Carlin's "genius" became a political issue but it seems that people with a certain political slant are obliged to gush over everything the man did. Late in his career his act was bitter and mean-spirited and there was nothing funny about it unless you enjoy an old dude living up to the bitter old man stereotype - which you can see anywhere anyway.

And while we are on the topic of "comedians" who people gush over for political reasons: Robin Williams and Billy Crystal were NEVER funny and Whoopi stopped being funny almost right after she became famous.

Athiests have no place in Ireland.

They're not going anywhere, and there will only be more of them as time goes on. Get used to it.

That is the way the Irish like it. Let them all stay in Dublin and leave the rest of Ireland to the Pope.Dublin is an Anglo city anyone. It is a cesspool

If you need to be told why that is funny then you have just shown yourself to have no sense of humor. And Carlin was funny well after 1999. Are you suggesting that he stopped being funny after he stopped drinking and using?

"Are you suggesting that he stopped being funny after he stopped drinking and using?"

He stopped being funny when his "jokes" became a bunch of bitter "I hate everything" rants that you could hear walking through any nursing home.

HOW OLD ARE YOU, GERI-TROLL?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

You know. That vaudville stuff went away when the moving pictures came along. They got sound and color now!!!

So, Sully, you favor antidisestablishmentarianism?

By holding Britain as our closest ally we are tacitly endorsing their system. America has not made a policy against royalty since the Declaration.

Thanks, SULLY---You state my own observations regarding George Carlin, when he was still amongst us. An unhappy man with poor jokes.

"How old are you, geri-troll....?"

I suspect a few years younger than you are, Munchkin.

"Vaudeville stuff went away when motion pictures came around...."

Actually not. The Marx Brothers, as one example, transferred many of their vaudeville routines to films which remain famous among those literate concerning American popular culture today.

That, obviously, leaves you out. I can recommend some reading.

That is the way the Irish like it.

The Irish are going to have to grow out of their pathetic superstitions and prejudices, I'm afraid. Besides, if you give a Japanese atheist a bottle of Jameson and drop him in the middle of the Emerald Isle, he'll be Irish enough to blend in.

There are Irish pubs in Tokyo and no one ever mistakesa a 3 foor Japanese man for an Irishmen. They can't hold their liquor. can't sing the Irish Rover( too many r's), and the St. Patrick's Day Parade has only one pipe band.

The Irish are not very prejudiced. The mayor of Dublin in the 1980's was Jewish but even he recognized Hibernia will always be Catholic even if the freaks in Dublin hate it

"So, Sully, you favor antidisestablishmentarianism?"

I recognize the need for an "establishment" but I tend to loathe whoever is in charge. Mostly because we live in an era where only totally selfish pricks can get the job.

"By holding Britain as our closest ally we are tacitly endorsing their system. America has not made a policy against royalty since the Declaration."

I disagree. People who have common interests and share common enemies are natural allies. And we don't need to make another statement about royalty as their isn't exactly a royalist movement in this country anymore and no monarch is laying claim to us either.
