In the future, America will harness cow farts to curb pollution and power the grid. What? It sounds like a joke, but it's actually a real promise. By 2020, dairy industry emissions will be reduced by 25%, largely by persuading dairy farmers to capture methane gas, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced at the Copenhagen climate change summit this week. Farmers will be able to buy anaerobic digesters that convert cow, errr, emissions into electricity.

This is the link from the article, some idiot (No it's not me) actually ignited a cow fart and almost burned his arm off...

There is a project (in I think Illinois) where methane was being mined from a landfill. Hey, why not cows, too?

Maybe they could put specially designed chairs in Mexican restaurants to collect the "output" of their customers.

There's also a project near where I used to live (formerly the Broward County Landfill - now known as Vista View Park) where methane is being extracted from several hillsides created, obviously, from the landfill.

It's my understanding that a certain amount of compression over years of time is necessary to create the methane before it can be extracted.

A compost pile for somebody's rose garden? Yes, cow manure is good for that. But extracting methane for commercial use . . . no way.

Any farmer who agrees to harness cow farts better make darn sure his overalls are fire retardant.

We're doing it at effluent lagoons at beef packing houses, too...
