New York (CNN) -- Calling a sharp drop in overall violence throughout America's most populous city "one for the record books," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced this week that 2009 saw historic crime-rate declines across the city's five boroughs.

The declines occurred in nearly every crime category, including the "lowest number of murders ever," Bloomberg said Monday.

Gun sales were way up in 2009. Ooopsie, did the media (CNN in this case) forget to mention that fact?

"Gun sales surge, violent crime drops"

Regardless of the supposed reason for the drop, we can all agree this is good news!

And yes, KBM, it is curious that shootings haven't surged as the raving mad anti gun people would think.

Oopsie, did you forget to read BOTH articles (mine AND YOURS)?:

From the article: "Along with stringent gun laws, regulations and enforcement mechanisms, the combination of all these strategies "have helped to substantially reduce the level of violence on our streets," Bloomberg said."

and then from YOUR link: "When Obama was voted into office as president, the gun surge began.

and

Preliminary statistics released by the FBI for the first half of 2009 show that violent crime continues a downward trend that began in 2006 . The figures show crime falling in all categoriesrobbery, aggravated assault, motor vehicle thefts, etc.with murders down a remarkable 10 percent from the previous year."

So..., what's point?

I thought this global depression would stimulate crime.

This is surprising. Historically when economic conditions worsen and unemployment increases crime increases. The Sociologists should have fun with these numbers.

Maybe property crime has. (I don't know) This article is about violent crime.

Moder-H8 should be along soon to credit this to the Messiah and his healing powers
