According to the history I have read about Jerusalem during this time period, the eye of a needle referred to was a narrow gate in the Jerusalem wall. It was notorious for the problems caused by camel owners trying to get to get their beast through the gate. The opening was narrow, and deep which caused the camels (about as stubborn and finicky as mules) to balk and refuse to move.

The comment by Jesus was illustrating the concept that rich people tend to worship their money more than they do their faith. It was never meant to suggest that a rich person can't get into heaven, only that they tend to have a mindset and stubbornness that makes it difficult.

I think vern and all the rest of the "Christians" should shut their mouth about persecution:
1. Because right now "Christians" are only persecuted in America by other "Christians" and not the world.
2. "Christians" are too worried about making the government legislate morality so that they don't have to stand against the grain and therefore be persecuted
and 3. "Christians" are told that they most definitely will be persecuted, expect to be persecuted and are told to continue on humbly in perserverance when persecuted, not sit and complain and make a big deal about how persecuted they are.
