In 2002, the Bush Administration was eager, almost desperate, to invade Iraq as part of a NeoCon vision of re-shaping the Middle East. Unfortunately, there were no facts to justify such a flagrant act. So they lied. Several times. First, they propagated a myth that Iraq had WMDs and there was reason to believe their use imminent. Second, through Cheney they pushed the lie that Saddam was somehow connected with the 9-11 attacks. To beef up the lies, they enlisted the aid British Prime Minister Blair.
Now that all is said and done, the truth has been exposed. But there are no prosecutions or other serious consequences. It is all basically deemed a fait accompli. A lie, which lead to horrific consequences, was successfully sold to the public by America's rightwing.
