Demonstrators in Iran have made it clear that their target is not just President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, or the disputed election that returned him to power in June, but the entire foundation of IranÂÂ's theocracy. "The regime is on a path which threatens its own survival," declared the Iranian Writers' Society, in a statement posted on opposition Web sites. "Those who sow the wind will harvest a typhoon."

It's starting to get nasty...stay tuned.

This will not end well for the theocracy if they keep unleashing the Basij on the protesters.

There were apparently pro-government demonstrations today after evening prayers. Undoubtedly organized by you-know-who.

Imagine that --- and we didn't even have to spend trillions bombing them?

What's up with that?

Yeah, but those were "thousands" (probably a few hundred) of demonstrators as opposed to "tens of thousands" (probably more accurate, given the photos) of opposition protesters.

Redcocosamiamvile-

If you don't think that having 100K+ US soldiers next door isn't emboldening the opposition in Iran, then you obviously haven't been talking to anyone of Persian decent here in the US lately.

There are over 20K Persian ex-pats in the west side of LA alone, and almost everyone has relatives back in Iran. What they are saying is that the protesters in Iran are hoping that the media glare and the US presence in Iraq will give the Theocracy pause before they start killing thousands of them, ala the Shah in the 50's-70's.

"If you don't think that having 100K+ US soldiers next door isn't emboldening the opposition in Iran"

YEAH! we have heard this story before!

They can't see that 150k was held helpless in Iraq for years.

Iran is The 18th largest country in the world in terms of area at 1,648,195 km, and has a population of over 70 million

An estimate of the total Iraqi population is 31 million

You are fucking High or totally deluded to think that 70 million is a cake walk compared to the nightmare that was 31 million!

And if you care to recall, (and im sure you really don't want to) ---- Americas medaling in Iran gave us the Iran we have today! Typical though, a wingdings penchant for ignoring history (even history from so recent an event)!

Yeah, but those were "thousands" (probably a few hundred) of demonstrators as opposed to "tens of thousands" (probably more accurate, given the photos) of opposition protesters.

No doubt. The pro-government rallies that have been held so far have been dwarfed by the opposition. It's interesting that the rallies on Monday provoked this sort of a response.

All of this is eerily reminiscent of what I've read and been told of the waxing and waning of protests in Iran and around the world prior to the Shah's fall. Just when the opposition appears to be losing momentum, there is a holiday or some other event that reinvigorates it. I'm not going as far as to say say the writing is on the wall, but I do not envy Khamenei's position right now.

having 100K+ US soldiers next door

A lot of things have all come together at the same time to "embolden the opposition". I would say that is serendipitous, but it's hard to find any serendipity in people being beaten, imprisoned and murdered. It may be that bloodshed is unavoidable, but it is nonetheless distasteful. As far as Iran goes, I hope their "tree of liberty" is watered with the blood of tyrants as it should be... not that of innocent people.

Oh goody, some folks want us to jump into another civil war.
We won't, Iran's oil reserves are diminishing.

Obama's silence is deafening. But he did stick up for the dictator-wanna-be in Honduras though.

Funny you should mention civil war Danni. We may not have very far to jump. From the European Union Times:

"Obama Orders 1 Million US Troops to Prepare for Civil War"

"Russian Military Analysts are reporting to Prime Minister Putin that US President Barack Obama has issued orders to his Northern Command's (USNORTHCOM) top leader, US Air Force General Gene Renuart, to "begin immediately" increasing his military forces to 1 million troops by January 30, 2010, in what these reports warn is an expected outbreak of civil war within the United States before the end of winter."

Obama's silence is deafening

Beirut Bonzo sent them TOW missiles by the thousands. Heckuva job, Ronnie.

Obama's silence is deafening.

As it should be. If the US makes any effort to intervene, it will allow the theocracy an opportunity to blame problems of its own making on a foreign power with a long history of interfering in Iranian affairs.

Muslims coming to their senses.

Who woulda thunk it?

Muslims coming to their senses.

Babu - it's not a recent thing. Maybe perusing this photo gallery will show that.

And do we have to remind the nut-sack republicans on this thread that THOSE IRANIAN PROTESTERS are LIBERAL MINDED IVORY TOWER STUDENTS WHO YEARN TO BREATH FREE.

And that the Conservative Theocracy these Liberal Iranians are protesting against is the ULTIMATE DREAM GOVERNANCE by which todays Talibaptists pray for?

Obama's silence is deafening.

I guess he never heard about or listened to Obamas Cairo Speech.

But Barry loves the thugs running this Iranian Theocracy because they remind him of his Butt-boy Rev. Wright.
