I'd love to hear the DR perspective; often gay-related issues are contentious and controversial here....

American Christians, such as Pastor Rick Warren, oppose life imprisonment and death penalty offenses for certain homosexual behaviors that Uganda plans on condemning.

Hey, for once the guy isn't being a dick. I don't expect this to last too long, though.

It took a lot of prodding for Warren to finally come out on this one.

There is a large christian presence in Africa and a large effort through religious missionaries to help with poverty and HIV/AIDS.

George W. did a lot to help with African poverty and HIV/AIDS.

The whole idea of a right wing conspiracy to kill off homosexuals half way across the world is retarded.

This pales in comparison to the human rights violations and travesties that have occurred in that region.

George W. did a lot to help with African poverty and HIV/AIDS.

Sure... take US money and you have to spend a portion on abstinence-only programs with a track record of failure.

Rick Warren has a good youtube video on this, called "A Letter To Pastors in Uganda" I believe...

Christians have always helped the poor, sick and downtrodden.

That some have got "off track" doesn't take that away...

Let the libbies handle Africa. Free condoms for everyone! And if the government decides to kill all the homosexuals . . . free condoms for everyone!

Liberals are worthless. Beyond worthless. If you're a starving African peasant--gay or not--who would you rather have looking after you? American churches? Or American liberals?

Take our libtard-in-chief. His predecessor did more for African AIDS and poverty than anyone before him; our present POTUS lets his own African brother toil away in abject poverty.

Beyond worthless. Typical, though. The libbies pretend to have a monopoly on compassion and mercy, but when it comes to cutting a check, they get alligator arms. Selfish.

I'm happy to hear Rick Warren do something.

And that he's supposedly sent it to them. That's been many of the complaints for all the religious opposition that they have simply been saying it here, not calling their Ugandan contacts and saying, "Dude... Dude! This is wrong!"

Granted, it'd be nice for Obama to weigh in on this. We do give lots of money to Uganda. I heard that 40% of their yearly budget comes from Aid donated to the country.

Why should we treat them in a civilized fashion if they aren't going to act as such?

Selfish.

That's rich. The greediest fucker on Drudge calling other people selfish. It's hard to find such a hypocritical, shameless example of projection.

If you're a starving African peasant--gay or not--who would you rather have looking after you? American churches? Or American liberals?

The church for sure. You can't cure disease or stop hunger with fisting kits, so liberal organizations would be worthless.

"Christians stand up for gays in Uganda"

Its a bit confusing that your headline reads "Christians stand up for gays in Uganda" ----- when it's "christians" who are floating the bill.

Are you drunk already?

Anyway, Do the names Scott Lively and Dan Schmierer ring a bell to you?

"but when it comes to cutting a check"

Easy come easy go --- is how the saying goes.

Sincerely

The Dead Conservatism

His predecessor did more for African AIDS and poverty than anyone before him

all that money to American talibaptists to skip their share off the top and preach abstinence only. Warren only opened his mouth when he figured out the Admin. might cut the funding to Uganda.

And RIW-libbies will get around to fixing Africa assoon as we fix the ME-a priority as none of us wants to have to learn farsi, the route the world was going thanks to Dubya.

You can't cure disease or stop hunger with fisting kits,
Wurster seems fascinated by fisting. Guess he and his special friend have a new hobby.

If you have hunger or disease, it's because baby Jesus wants you to have them. Like getting killed on 9-11 or having a miscarriage. God had it in for you.

Redneckville,

Show me where "Christians are promoted this bill"...or do you just ass ume?

Or do you think Christians are the only people who don't approve of homosexuality?
I bet there's more people who hate gays out there than Christians who love gays but disapprove of their behavior.

I see reports of where Christians (above and beyond all others) are HELPING homosexuals and victims of AIDS (they're not mutually exclusive).

We also hear the complaints about Christians not doing shit for the down-and-out, and here news reports are staring you in the face...

Warren Bitched out:

For the last few weeks influential U.S. pastor Rick Warren has been under fire from critics for refusing to condemn the proposed draconian anti-gay laws in Uganda which would punish homosexual behavior with jail time or even death and punish those who fail to report gays to the authorities despite his longstanding involvement in the country and having had one of the main campaigners for the law as a speaker at his church. Warren had previously said, "It is not my personal calling as a pastor in America to comment or interfere in the political process of other nations."
All well and good, except no one is expecting Warren to comment on every unjust law in the world, just ones in countries where he has an extensive history of involvement, are sponsored by his onetime ally, and concerns a subject that he frequently discusses. After the Ugandan Anglican Church threatened to leave the Church of England, Warren rose to their defense, saying, "The Church of England is wrong and I support the Church of Uganda on the boycott." So it's not as if he's afraid to wade into Uganda's culture wars.

Warren says that, "some erroneously concluded that
I supported this terrible bill, and some even claimed I was a sponsor of the bill." But people only came to these conclusions because of his refusal to comment. Warren might not think it's fair that he was asked about the law, but he's a public figure that many people look to for moral guidance and it shouldn't be an unreasonable demand to expect him to condemn the state-sanctioned murder of innocent people.

Moreover, reports yesterday indicated that the Ugandan parliament had actually removed the most controversial portion of the bill the possibility of the death penalty or life inprisonment for homosexuals. So Warren actually waited for the death-penalty provision to be dropped before speaking out against it.

The bill has an American genesis of sorts, inspired to a large extent by the visits of U.S. evangelicals who are involved with a movement that promotes Christianity's role in getting homosexuals to become "ex-gays" through prayer and faith. Ugandan supporters of the bill appear to be particularly impressed by the ideas of Scott Lively, a California conservative preacher who has written a book, The Pink Swastika, about what he calls the links between Nazism and a gay agenda for world domination, which, by itself, would have raised the anti-colonial sensitivities of Ugandan society. Says the Rev. Kapya Kaoma, an Episcopalian priest from Zambia who authored a recent report on anti-gay politics in Uganda, Nigeria and Kenya: "The U.S. culture wars have been exported to Africa."

One of the bill's loudest supporters is a charismatic pastor, Martin Ssempa, who heads a Ugandan campus AIDS eradication organization that is funded in part by the U.S. and who was associated with the global outreach of Southern California's Saddleback Church, run by Rick Warren, author of best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life. Ssempa has a penchant for burning condoms. In 2007, he organized a rally against homosexuality to protest "homosexual agents and activists" who were "infiltrating Uganda." Asked how the anti-homosexuality bill might affect the fight against HIV and AIDS, Ssempa seemed bemused. "I don't see what this bill has to do with HIV," he told TIME. Warren, who has called Uganda a "purpose-driven nation," cut ties with Ssempa in October as controversy over the bill grew.

Warren can't take the heat for his own words. Sure I'm glad he's bothered to address the results of his own meddling in Uganda - a country he's called out as "purpose driven" and a country where his book is second to the Bible.

The same "The Family" asshats are all coming out with their statements opposing Uganda's executing gays legislation, but so far, they're only bothering to do it in the U.S. media. Not Uganda.

All this while Inhofe's "Jesus trips" continue to Uganda.

This man makes me sick. He's the same hypocrite that said he'd never taken a stand on Prop 8 in CA, then the video surfaced showing him to doing just that, and making him a complete liar.

I appreciate Warren actually appearing to find Jesus' compassion, but let's be clear: Maddow hounded him and he issued his statement when the absolute atrocity of his beliefs, made manifest in Uganda, were exposed.

You can't cure disease or stop hunger with fisting kits

Looks like you won't be helping out much, Wurster.

According to the census of 2002, Christians made up about 84% of Uganda's population

The measure was proposed in Uganda following a visit by leaders of U.S. conservative Christian ministries.
In March of this year, American anti-gay activists traveled to Uganda for a conference that pledged to "wipe out" homosexuality. Seven months later, David Bahti, a Ugandan lawmaker and a member of the Family sponsored the "Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009."
The Family had converted Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni to its anti-gay brand of Christianity. The organization's leader, Doug Coe, calls Museveni the Family's "key man" in Africa. The Family and other anti-gay groups have long viewed Uganda as a laboratory to experiment with Christian theocracy.
The next connection is between Pastor Rick Warren [supporter of Prop 8] and Ugandan Pastor, Martin Ssempa who apparently is a regular guest at Rick Warren's church. Ssempa is a vicious hate driven individual responsible for outing gays and lesbians.
Warren's silence has repercussions beyond Uganda. Draconian anti-gay legislation is appearing throughout the continent, often closely tied to the explosion of American-style evangelical Christianity. Warren has been a crucial part of that explosion and has tremendous clout with conservative African clergy and with many politicians.
Warren is very close to both the Ugandan and the Rwandan leadership. He counts first lady Janet Museveni, who has spoken at Warren's Saddleback church, as a personal friend. During a visit to the country last year, Warren lent his voice to the anti-gay stance of Uganda's Anglican bishops. "Dr Warren said that homosexuality is not a natural way of life and thus not a human right," reported one Ugandan newspaper. "We shall not tolerate this aspect at all,' Dr Warren said."

If all you libbies are gung-ho for Prop 8, it must have been bad. I don't even know what it is, but I hope it loses.

If libtards would send in a nickel to African relief for every minute they spent on blogs beating up on Rick Warren and George Bush, Africa would have an obesity problem.

I'm moved by your concern for your African brothers, libbies. I'm sure they are too.

If libtards would send in a nickel to African relief for every minute they spent on blogs beating up on Rick Warren and George Bush, Africa would have an obesity problem.

If Mormons sent the 22 million they dumped into prop 8 to a relief agency, you could feed everybody in Uganda for a day. Of course, God likes starving Africans more than he likes gay marriage. Gotta keep the sky guy happy, even if it means being a hypocritical piece of shit.

Apparently Californians don't like gay marriage any more than God does. Point taken, though--I've got a big problem with Christian organizations putting big dollars into political questions, instead of moral ones.

Wow, here is the real story of what those lovely x-trians are doing in Uganda!!

"Christian rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army are conducting a civil war in the north of Uganda. Their goal is a Christian theocracy whose laws are based on the Ten Commandments. They abduct, enslave and/or raped about 2,000 children a year. 6"

Talk about spreading gods curse!!

LM

"The church for sure. You can't cure disease or stop hunger with fisting kits, so liberal organizations would be worthless."

Obviously from the proud owner of two of these kits!!

You're a weird guy mongrel.

Yep. A lot of people in need could be helped by the resources religious organizations devote to meddling in politics. If there is one thing that religions are good at, it is encouraging and providing charity. If they they stuck to that, the world would be a much better place.

*** Christians stand up for gays in Uganda ***

.....the dirty pricks are just trying to avoid responsibility for what they started.......

.....Warren started the war on gays in Uganda, and now he has lost control of it.......

......if there will be any blood, it will be on his hands, and no amount of back pedaling is going to be sufficient..........

I think there is a BIG difference between people who are Christian, and organized religions.

I see little difference between the large churches, the large unions, and the bloated gov't. They are all intermixed, they all are out for as much as they can get, and they all attempt to distract you with bullshit while they separate you from your money.

I do support small churches, where the preacher drives a car as old as mine and monies collected go to help the poor and the needy. They are getting harder to find. Feeding the hungry, clothing the homeless, etc.

I support charities that are the same way, where the money I donate goes to help the needy.

I have not been able to find any really descent politicians to support.

Redneck,
Thanks for the citation.

Do you think all Christians want Uganda-style laws (like the ones we're talking about) we just don't have the balls to admit it here because it's not politically viable?

Kind of like foreign-born Muslims I've talked to here that say my friend and I should be executed for insulting Mohammad, the only reason it wouldn't happen is because this is America...

Here's what I wonder:
My friend who prayed to give his life to Jesus and stop his homosexual behavior had sooo many intolerant gay friends scream at him, abandon their friendship, talk shit about him to others, I can only imagine what that's like.

He said that all his straight friends were cool with him when he came out of the closet, but said not ONE gay friend was even close to accepting when he "decided he wasn't gay anymore."
I honestly can't think of someone who's faced more rejection in one month than he has...

The "choice" to be gay is an interesting topic...but gets the most "name-calling" of anything Ikve ever seen on the DR.

Bahati told BBC that homosexuality is neither a human right nor is it in-born. It is a behavior learned and it can be unlearned," he said on BBC

A lack of progressivism found in the land that gave the world Idi Amin?

Shocked, Spud is shocked to learn this!!

He said that all his straight friends were cool with him when he came out of the closet, but said not ONE gay friend was even close to accepting when he "decided he wasn't gay anymore".

~Kirk

Maybe yer friend should move to Uganda.

Bahati might buy into his BS.

Sane folk won't.

Speaking of BS...

Rick Warrens sanctimonious back handed attempt to chide the Ugandan government here (despite essentially agreeing with them in too many ways) was less than useless.

Be Well.

He said that all his straight friends were cool with him when he came out of the closet, but said not ONE gay friend was even close to accepting when he "decided he wasn't gay anymore."

Never underestimate the power of self-deception, Kirk. That's why you're able to swallow a load of untenable dogma and promptly start begging for seconds.

"Decided he wasn't gay any more...."

Surprising? Shouldn't be. "Sexual identity" is a squirmier concept than anyone is ever comfortable with. Stress "anyone".

"Never underestimate the power of self-deception..."

Indeed. And question anyone who flatly states he is never, ever deceived.

I am weird because on a thread where the right is trying to prop up x-trianity as doing good in Uganda for gays, while ignoring the war they created and the children they rape, murder and enslave I don't go along with the ignorance. Sorry, but it's x-trians who turn a blind eye to this who are weird, actually they are SICK! They desereve to be judged, and very quickly. Just like their muslim brothers in Sudan, these religions are devastating those countries!!

LM

"They deserve to be judged...."

Hop on board, fella. If you think you're going to be left out then, well, aren't you the egocentric so-and-so?

He said that all his straight friends were cool with him when he came out of the closet, but said not ONE gay friend was even close to accepting when he "decided he wasn't gay anymore."

I dont know about you, but I could not imagine it even being possible that I could not be heterosexual anymore.

I could not imagine it even being possible that I could not be heterosexual anymore.

If you had been raised to believe that heterosexuality was inherently evil and a sizable portion of the population was extremely hostile toward heterosexuals, you might be able to convince yourself to lighten your loafers a bit.

It's no different with all these dolts who think you can pray the gay away. They encourage others' self-deception.

Wow. I thought Ted Haggard was still in Colorado.

"You might convince yourself to lighten your loafers a bit...."

Elements of personality for many people, even essential elements of personality, are mere moveable blocks to some people.

There's an unbridgeable gap between those people who are always something and those people who are never quite anything.

There's an unbridgeable gap between those people who are always something and those people who are never quite anything.

You're always "something". What you say that is, though, can be a different matter entirely.

"You're always something...."

To include a permanent or semi-permanent state of transition.

To include a permanent or semi-permanent state of transition.

Every moment of life is some sort of a transition. When you're unchanging, you're probably dead. Or were you talking about a more surgical sort of transition between holes and poles?

Of toilets and transexuals...

No, I'm talking about a perpetually moving target. Personal identity can be amorphous enough to include just about everything, or almost nothing at all.
