The proportion of independents now equals its highest level in 70 years. Owing to defections from the Republican Party, independents are more conservative on several key issues than in the past. While they like and approve of Barack Obama, as a group independents are more skittish than they were two years ago about expanding the social safety net and are reluctant backers of greater government involvement in the private sector. Yet at the same time, they continue to more closely parallel the views of Democrats rather than Republicans on the most divisive core beliefs on social values, religion and national security.

The teabaggers/teapartiers may be making a lot of noise but they are more like a splinter group full of sound and fury signifying nothing than they are a broad based grass roots movement that will change other people's opinions in any significant way.

Republicans who have defected to the independents are not going to be lured back by them, their antics are more likely to alienate them even more from the GOP as it stands helplessly by watching them bring conservatism into disrepute.

The Indies have always been Repubs. They only join to get the stink of the rtards off of them-then go their own way.

The Libertarians are different-they're outright nuts!
IF the Libertarians ever got to turn back the clock the way they want-we'd be left in such weakened condition Canada could invade and conquer us.
They give no thought to the true damage their agenda would do to this country.

Why exactly is that? ...because Obama hasn't made good on one signficant plank of his platform.

Populism is the only chance for the GOP to recover.

Independents Take Center Stage?

I don't know about that one. People seem more polarized. I guess a lot are not content identifying with a party, though.

A lot of people are just sick of the bullshit that comes with American politics. It's a bullshitter vs. a bullshitter every 4 years. This time was no exception.

I'm one of those that voted 3rd party in 2008. While my experience is purely anecdotal, I would say that it's far more likely that the Republicans will earn my vote in 2010, than the Democrats ever will.

36% of voters now self-identify as democrats. While that's still better than the Repub numbers--barely--it hardly seems like the majority will be rewarding a lot of Dumbos with re-election. Who knows though.
