The surf grew so large that a few beaches on Oahu and Maui were closed because lifeguards feared inexperienced sightseers could drown, according to state officials. "After the water comes in, it can drag you back out with it," said Eric Basta, a manager at Surf N Sea in Haleiwa. 'Be mindful of how powerful the surf really is.' As violent as the waves were, they are expected to growth in strength, according to the National Weather Service. The high waves are expected to continue throughout Wednesday. Some surfin' music to get in the mood --

Surfing USA - Beach Boys

Hawaii's climate must be real nice about now.

But don't come to California if you want warm weather. In Los Angeles this morning it was 34 degrees!

How cold is it where you live?

I went up to the North Shore on Oahu, when I was there in 2004.

At Banzai Pipeline, the waves were so incredibly huge, I wouldn't even think of going near the water.

There weren't any surfers going out either.

RoyBatty,

I know a lot of people, myself included, a number of times won't bother to click on the link to the story. But if you haven't done so already, you really should check out these surf photos. They expect those waves on the North Shore to possibly reach 50 feet this week. Unreal.

"How cold is it where you live?"

It's going to hit in the low 30's here today, Chris.

We were out shoveling, got a couple of inches mixed with freezing rain, more rain and then snow again later today.

School was called off so the little guy is out playing with the neighborhood kids while I'm on day two of Christmas baking.

Visiting Hawaii would be wonderful but not for Christmas.

Gotta have the cold and snow!!! : )

All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buds, and I'm fine.

Nine degrees or so - feels like zero or less or like our zgirl likes to ask, "What's the windshield factor today?" In ten years I don't recall it being so cold either here or in Minnesota.

9 degrees, nanc? Wow, now that's cold!

I'm with you on that one, Lisa. I'm not into "warm and sunny" at Christmas time. Totally puts me out of the mood. That's why I was so jazzed yesterday and today to have the weather here in Los Angeles hover in the mid-30's. We usually never get below the mid-40's even in the winter.

The weather report said it's 36 degrees now and the humidity is 77. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping we might see a couple of SNOWFLAKES! I've got my camera ready.

So the little guy was let out of school early due to the weather? Looks like I'm not the only one looking forward to the snow. I'll probably still be referring to him as the "little guy" when one day you'll say to me "Err, Chris, he's 25 years old now." LOL

Hope your fracture holds up okay until you go and get it re-set after the New Year. If the pain gets too bad, or you think the fracture has taken a turn for the worse, you might think about having it done sooner. You said you were going to move after Christmas but -- wow -- picking up and carrying boxes and packing, etc. is going to put a lot of excess strain on it. Just be sure you don't aggravate it too much.

Well, I've been putting it off 'cause it's so cold out but need to go and bring the three now-empty trash barrels into the backyard. Sometimes the trash truck will leave them kinda' far out from the curb and so it can make them an obstacle for cars coming around the corner. I'm wearing a warm sweatshirt and jeans to go outside but, being a typical Californian, I've still got sandals on my feet. lol

Wow, some of those are giant! Death on a stick out there, mate!

After all the snow I shoveled last night, and waking up to see a mountain of new snow on top of what I cleared, I would take Hawaii's tall dangerous waves over this any day.

So lucky to be here when those big waves are coming in. Wow.

The biggest surf I had ever seen was in 1997-8 on the North Shore, and the year before that on the south shore. I remember towering waves at Barber's Point that flooded the parking lots--I wouldn't have even believed that was even possible.

I nearly drowned at Waimea, twice, in surf that was 12-15. Surf of that height has a face of more than 22 feet there--in Hawaii, they measure waves from the back, because of the variability in face from beach to beach.

Good memories. Eddie Would Go!

It was 28 degrees this morning until about 9. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Gotta have the cold and snow!!! : )

You have to be out of your mind.

It was announced tonight a guy from San Diego won as best surfer for the Quicksilver.

Check this out -- the waves must be 30 feet high BEFORE they will even hold the contest.

On my way home a few minutes ago the temp outside was 9.

Hey, Al Gore, where the FUCK is my global warming... I'm freezing my ass off!!!!!

Supposed to warm up tomorrow... think they are predicting 14 as a high temp.

Kinda makes you wonder, how we have these frigid temps, early in December.

This is the kind of weather we expect in late January or February.

My god, in August it was hot. Now it's cold! Another ice age!!
