Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Tuesday, December 01, 2009

President Obama said Tuesday that the deployment of 30,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan is part of a strategy to reverse the Taliban's momentum and stabilize the country's government. "There is no imminent threat of the government being overthrown, but the Taliban has gained momentum," Obama said at the U.S. Military Academy. "Al Qaeda has not re-emerged in Afghanistan in the same numbers as before 9/11, but they retain their safe-havens along the border. "And our forces lack the full support they need to effectively train and partner with Afghan security forces and better secure the population. ... In short, the status quo is not sustainable."

Obama over Charlie Brown? What are the networks thinking?

FACT:

War is NEVER a solution.
War has NEVER resolved disputes.
War is ALWAYS wrong.

Be Well.

"War is ALWAYS wrong"

Which language would you like to speak: French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Russian, etc.

Try not to be so shallow and ignorant. Your "FACT[s]" are simply inane.

Obama is fucking up. We should be packing up and coming Home not sending in MORE troops. G-d what is He thinking??????

Larry

Fuck this Hope and Change shit.

Next time, I'm voting for Despair and Constancy.

#8 - FFFFFFF!

I'm still in shock he's pre-empting the Charlie Brown Christmas Special!

Heh, yeah. Not exactly a great way to raise your poll numbers, eh nanc?

Well, the dude did say he would "focus more on Afghanistan". I guess I was just "hoping" that he was pandering on that point to keep from looking like too much of a dove during the elections.

I also thought our current status as "fiscally fucked" might preclude the possibility of continuing these wars.

Seriously bad miscalculations on my part.

War is big business. In this time of world economic turmoil, war is the answer.

But he'll also declare Tuesday night that troops will begin leaving in less than three years.

Does his time table really mean anything? He has lied from the beginning. Its okay though because Code Pink now supports these wars as a justifiable effort to improve woman's rights in the middle east.

Liberals are so fucking stupid. I hope all of you who donated money to, or voted Obama are pleased with your endorsement of the further prolonging of this war. You're all just as bad as the neo-cons!

A brother with the largest cache of weapons in the world. What the hell do you expect?

What happened to the intro?

Barack Obama, hope and change
No experience, qualifications, or wide range.
Promises many, to the primary went
With them folded the liberals in his tent.

Barack Obama, hope and change
No experience, qualifications, or wide range.
Promises many, to the general elction went
Modidied promises, folded the independents in his tent

Barack Obama, hope and change
No experience, qualifications, or wide range.
Through guile, smiles, and marketting the election won.
Reality sets in with no place to run.

Barack Obama, on minor issues he throws a fish
Landing with a thud on the liberal's dish.
Major issues; healthcare reform and cap-n-trade
Only minor changes, subsequently made

Barack Obama, smiling and soft talking his liberal fan.
Why don't we put more troops in Afghanistan.
A puppet on a string he is indeed.
Wallstreet and big business he does heed.

Barack Obama, one year later, promises not kept.
Liberals, once again conned, silently wept.
Barack Obama, his staff behind closed doors snickering.
Liberals, unaware, constantly bickering.

Barack Obama, no hope and change
No experience, qualifications or wide range
Smooth talk, smiles, and independents more wise.
Now realizing all the subterfuge and lies

Barack Obama, no hope and change
Gitmo, Iraq, Afghanistan, healhcare, cap-n-trade, the same old range
Dingdisaster, Nullified, Illegio, liberals all; feeling the Obama shoe in their tush.
REALIZING THE SECOND COMING OF BUSH.

This speech is horrible. Obama is saying the same thing as Bush did only Obama keeps apologizing for it. He should either outright condemn the wars and say GTFO, or say Bush was right and we should follow through. He is saying both are true, which doesn't make sense.

Shouldn't htat headline read "Live, Obama Campaign Stop #456" ?

Obama is just like Bush! They sound the same. This even more blatant than I thought it would be.

Damn Obama is pre empting Abby Scuito. THAT is a crime in and of itself. Bad Obama Bad.

Larry

Yall think Bush looks good with his new tan?

meet the new boss. same as the old boss.

Are you believing the morning papers?
War is coming back in style
There's generals here, advisors there
And Russians nibbling everywhere
The chessboard's filling up with red
We make more profits when we blow off their heads

Economy is looking bad
Let's start another war when ya get drafted
Fan the fires of racist hatred
We want total war when ya get drafted

Drooling fingers
Panic buttons
Playing with missiles like they're toys
There's easy money, easy jobs
Especially when you build the bombs
That blow big cities off the map
Just guess who profits when we build 'em back up
Yeah, what Big Business wants Big Business gets

It wants a war when ya get drafted
Trilateral Commission goonies laugh
and scheme for more when ya get drafted
Call the Army!
Call the Navy!
Stocked with kids from slums when ya get drafted
If you can't afford a slick attorney
We might make you a spy

Forget your demonstrations
Kids today sit on their ass when ya get drafted
Just a six-pack
And you're happy
We're prepared
For when ya get drafted

Sorry Larry. Sucks to be you. Your Golden Boy is just another neo-con.

So what's new? Tax on milk?

At least Bush showed some emotion. Our puppet-in-chief has the manner of Frankenstein. I wonder if he needs a teleprompter to whisper sweet nothings in Michelle's ear?

Afghanistan forever. He is saying we will have a permanent military presence in Afghanistan.

Even though I think this is horrible and I hate it, the irony is killing me. This is hilarious.

No actually it doesn't suck to be Me on this point cause I learned from My mistake. I am not like the Bushites who voted for Him a second time. See I r smart at times.

Larry

He's got at least 2 teleprompters, maybe three.

Trying to justify this by being "people centric."--what is it with this guy?

Yall like Bush's new hair cut?

No actually it doesn't suck to be Me on this point cause I learned from My mistake. I am not like the Bushites who voted for Him a second time. See I r smart at times.

Good for you Lar, my respect for you just keeps on growing.

Obummer said this isn't like vietnam.

What say you, Danni?

I have never been happier or prouder that I voted for this guy.

Well--that was a great speech.

He did sound like Bush--quite amazing.

Now let's just finish the job!

Afghanistan forever. He is saying we will have a permanent military presence in Afghanistan.

He didn't say that at all. In fact, he named July 2011 as the target date for our exit strategy, which rejects an open-ended commitment.

Excellent speech

Obama was elected on an anti war stance. I hope all you liberals remember this. Pelosi as well. She's not going to voice any opposition. You've been duped.

And I miss my Snoopy and Charlie Brown, he just lost my support, no more good words for the O...

Say what you will, the guy knows how to give a stirring speech.

Good luck to You Corky. I am sorry that I did. He tore My heart out numerous times. I just hope He can salvage this Health Care insurance stuff. If not I don't know.

Larry

At least now the DR libs have their talking points for the next few days. Now that Afghanistan is fixed, the jobs summit on Thursday should fix the unemployment rate. Of course it'll take just as long, but only one or two more stimulus packages should do it.

Obama was elected on an anti war stance.

No, he wasn't. He said during the campaign that we needed more troops in Afghanistan.

RCADE My Daddy always said Talks CHeap takes money to buy whiskey. Show Me the MONEY Honey.

Larry

I hope we can get it done in a year and a half.

The time line stuff is kinda' goofy.

But he sounds committed. He is going for the surge although he said the surge in Iraq wouldn't work.

Let's just hope he is determined enough to see it all the way through.

He didn't say that at all.

he mentioned 'u.s. cooperation' with afghans long after the guns are gone or whatever he said. Cooperation = military bases. And Pakistan? We're not leaving. We will have a presence there long after '11.

Murphy,

Obama didn't sound like Bush. Bush wanted to start WWIII, claiming a "global war on terror". Bush removed troops from Afghanistan. He only sent about 20k there to begin with and kept about 10k there throughout. He diverted us from the people who actually attacked us to iraqnam.

Them is the facts.

And for those who claim Obama has lied or not stayed true to his campaign promises.

Barack Obama will work with his military commanders to responsibly end the war in Iraq. Obama will refocus our resources on al Qaeda in Afghanistan and finish the fight with the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11.
www.barackobama.com

"FINISH THE FIGHT WITH THE TERRORISTS WHO ATTACKED US ON 911"
from Obama's campaign page....

-He did sound like Bush

GW sounded like the amazingly incompetent imbecile he is, and he never was interested in Afghanistan. As is demonstrated by his dumping them for Iraq, and leading them on with promises for years.

He didn't say that at all. In fact, he named July 2011 as the target date for our exit strategy, which rejects an open-ended commitment.

Just in time for the elections--it'll be a partial pull-out although will be presented as a full pull-out so he can suck the libs (another con) into voting for him again.

Let's just hope he is determined enough to see it all the way through.

#42 | POSTED BY MURPHY AT 2009-12-01 08:43 PM

The truth is that the SURGE didn't work.

www.icasualties.org

3rd graph down

The surge began in Feb 07.
Each and every month after that, US casualties DOUBLED over the two years before. By August 07, US casualties reached a point that was MORE than ANY August previously during the occupation.

On August 29, 2007, a truce was reached with al sadr. _(read DIPLOMACY). And since that truce was reached, US casualties DROPPED in half and continued to drop since to levels allowing Obama to turn security of iraq over to iraqis.

Remember when John Kerry debated bush in the 2004 election and said DIPLOMACY was needed to stop the violence and allow our troops to return home? He was shouted down as a "terrorist appeaser" by the neocons, including bush, rice, cheney, etc.

Yet, it was diplomacy that allowed us to begin removing troops in iraqnam, not the surge.

That being said, if sending more gives us a better chance of bringing them all home sooner, I'm down with that.

An excellent speech.

Obama's detractors miss the point that he is a pragmatist not an ideologue. He has shown it in his decisions on the stimulus package, Guantanamo, the health care debate and Afghanistan.

"He has shown it in his decisions on the stimulus package, Guantanamo, the health care debate and Afghanistan."

Of course he hasn't actually been able to actually do anything about any of those, but that's just an inconvenient truth.

That being said, if sending more gives us a better chance of bringing them all home sooner, I'm down with that.

#47 | Posted by woke at 2009-12-01 08:48 PM

And it's a big "if" too.

Sure hope we're doing the right thing adding another 30,000 troops, but like you said -- if it brings all our boys all home sooner then I'm down with that too.

#40 | Posted by rcade

Rcade--you have to admit he was the 'anti-war candidate'.

Why did the libs and dems go after Hillary so hard?

They demanded she retrack her vote and apologize for voting for the resolution.

And Woke--

Obama used the same language as Bush about his reference to the Afghan people--talking to them directly. The history he gave was in the same vein as Bush. Bush may had had more passion.

Obama lacked a little on specifics--but you can't just go out there and lay out all the plans and how to's for the enemy to take notes on.

I don't like that he put an 18 month withdraw of the troops.

It sounds bizarre to say we are sending in the troops and they'll be out starting in 18 months.

Not sure we can ever leave. Training the Afghans will be a feat unto itself.

ABC showed film of our troops in Kandahar, which was liberated and gained a brief reprieve before GQ pulled out early, and now the Taliban is terror bumming them again.

It was the first time I guess I've seen women in combat with the front lines interviewed, and they were happy to have the help coming.

10K of these forces will go there for a couple of years and give them their lives back, confirm teh promises we made to them when we went in, and prevent al Qaeda from coming back?

OK by me.

The Afghan people as a whole have faith in only one entity, their military, and if we build them up, stability and progress will be possible.

GQ ? GW

Woke--

Agree to disagree.

The surge produced the heavy casualties--because we had more troops in there for the fight against the terrorists. They had all left Afghanistan and went to Iraq.

Al Sadr--had to come to terms and stand down--otherwise he would be wiped out and killed. He was toast. Ask Fallujah.

--------

The ball is bouncing in Afghanistan--we need to kill the enemy--with our partners and Pakistan.

Destroy the drug trade and replace with something they can grow for the people.

And we have to destroy the taliban and AQ.

Presidents do not get magic wands at the inauguration,
these things take time.

"We did not ask for this war" "19 highjackers took 3000 lives"

Good Grief.

Send all the politicians kids to the front line first to see how much they really believe in this bogus venture.

Presidents don't get magic wands? Then who would want to be president?

Watched the speech on fox news. They kept on panning to sleeping cadets! Were the other networks doing that as well?

He didn't say that at all. In fact, he named July 2011 as the target date for our exit strategy, which rejects an open-ended commitment.

#33 | Posted by rcade at 2009-12-01 08:39 PM

He shouldn't set any time tables publicly. Anyway, is Gitmo still open?

At least you had enough sense to use the term (target date). You're not completely delusional. Yet.

"Not sure we can ever leave..."

Primary reason just to go now.

Anyway...... I'll put a hook in your jaw...... It's all biblical. Yep, sure is.

Iran is building new subtrefuges and the horses are circling the wagon.

Or as Wayne might say, game on.

"Presidents don't get magic wands?"

Ruby Slippers?

Presidents don't get magic wands?

So, that would make the ship of state the good ship Lollipop?

Say what you will, the guy knows how to give a stirring speech.

Perfect exhibit of how we got to where we are today.

Obama has a ten foot nose. If you can't see it, you're blind.

#56 | POSTED BY AUNTIESOCIAL AT 2009-12-01 09:03 PM

We don't really need to do that since the results of 8 yrs of neocon economic policies have finally made it possible to gain enough volunteers in our military.

Personally, I am for a draft of sorts for ALL Americans, regardless of money, education, etc...with no deferments, except for mental/physical disabilities. 2 years.

Allow them to choose from:

1. military

2. foreign (peace corps) or community service

Get ALL Americans involved in our government, off their asses and off mtv......

=He shouldn't set any time tables publicly.

Like we don't have a public timetable in Iraq?

Puleeeze!

I just hope He can salvage this Health Care insurance stuff. If not I don't know.

You won't like it when/if it happens, Larry. You'll be required to go on a very serious diet.....for the good of the collective, of course.

You'll be okay with that. Right, Larry?

Bit long-a speech for all reasons?

But didn't say anything I wasn't expecting, Karsick has to shape up cause we ain't holding his hand forever, taliban has to chill and pakistan needs to keep on keeping on.

Speech was more for dems than anybody, though he did manage to skewer Reagan and Dubya nicely, without mentioning their names.

Rcade--you have to admit he was the 'anti-war candidate'.

That's simply not true. He was consistent during the campaign about being for withdrawal from Iraq so that we put the emphasis back on Afghanistan to finish the job there.

He said he'd do exactly what he's done here. I wish he would withdraw from both countries, but that's not what he promised.

"FINISH THE FIGHT WITH THE TERRORISTS WHO ATTACKED US ON 911"
from Obama's campaign page....

And, note who it is again making this all about POLITICS, eh?>

GOP=politics OVER country

Up the number of troops for 18 months and then pull out. Let Taliban know all they have to do is hide and then it is theirs. Maybe his father should have pulled out.

He shouldn't set any time tables publicly.

We all know we are going to leave Afghanistan someday. Why not tell them the date so they can prepare for the stability of their own country? Is it better to surprise them?

Let Taliban know all they have to do is hide and then it is theirs.

This is extremely simplistic thinking. The Taliban know that we're not going to stay forever. They are going to attempt to wait us out regardless of a target exit date.

The only people we affect by not announcing a date are the Afghan government. They need time to prepare for when their future is completely in their own hands.

GW sounded like the amazingly incompetent imbecile he is, and he never was interested in Afghanistan. As is demonstrated by his dumping them for Iraq, and leading them on with promises for years.

Hey dumbass..... Iraq is basically secured (and so is the oil) and now has operational US bases..... In case you're not paying attention (which obviously is the case) Iran is now surrounded on all sides.....

Where's the first place we went when we entered WW2?

No magic wands, but they get a cool private jet, a limo that ignores stop signs and big desk in a nice office.

#67 | Posted by Corky at 2009-12-01 09:15 PM

Sure we do..... Just like the one we have in Korea.

We are willing to send an additional 30,000 troops and risk the lives of the troops that are there. We are willing to spend 30 Billion over the next year on this war, per Obama's speech, yet, a real investigation into the true story and happenings of 9/11 is out of the question!?!?!?!?!?

No invasion of Saudi Arabia on the horizon, no ISI money trail to be discovered anytime soon, John Farmer admits 9/11 commission severely flawed to the point of being a farce, but we are willing to send American boys and girls to die and hopefully one day have peaceful goat herders in Afghanistan?

Don't you want to know for sure what you are dying for?

- all they have to do is hide and then it is theirs

No, they weren't so hard to kick out the first time, and we're just going to have to do it again since your boy pissed away his chance to finish the job.

You believe the Iraqis can stand up, but not the Afghans?

How convenient is that?

-Just like the one we have in Korea

You can look up the one we have now, and it appears to going fine. On schedule, no problem.

But it won't work in Afghanistan?

Again, convenient. What a lucky kinda guy, eh?

Pretty pathetic that desperate rightwingers would liken this speech to anything Bushesque. But then again, the GOPhers have been pathetically desperate for some time now.

=the true story and happenings of 9/11

Oh goody! Tell us the TRUE story, eh?

it was brilliant.....so full of hope and change....finally we are free from neocon bush wars...wait what?

Peaceful goat herders......Goatman?
nawwwww

Cleaning up after any Bush is messy bidness. Unless you have a magic wand... or some fairy dust.

I remember when libs were glad to go to Kosovo for humanitarian reasons,

This humanitarian disaster is little different, sans our responsibility for helping create it and our promises to finish the job.

It is the White House staff and the whole accumulated culture of the executive branch that turned him into this. If he were listening to his deepest base he would get out now. All these other considerations, all this trying to shape the future, this is a hubris that a new president nearly always acquires. I am just going to have to believe that there are highly classified reasons for continuation (the pipeline) over there. Oh well, the opium will pay for it.

I am just going to have to believe that there are highly classified reasons for continuation (the pipeline) over there.

#86 | Posted by grumpy_too

Now that he's no longer a candidate, but is the POTUS and has access to all the facts and intelligence, he's continuing most of Bush's policies. Think any of the libs here can connect the dots?

"Pockeystahn" for Pakistan - B. Obama

"URINE-us." for Uranus - Dan Rather

"Chinggis Khaan" for Genghis Khan - John Kerry

What is it with you guys? I really don't know if these are mispronunciations, I have heard that "Chinggis" is the more formal pronunciation, if some lefty didn't corrupt the source in order to make Kerry look good. (Comparable perhaps to cleaning the Augean Stables in a single day) But Jay-sus, you guys so love to put on airs. And what was the deal with Rather? Was he so scared of saying something like "dark rings have been discovered around Uranus"?

I remember when libs were glad to go to Kosovo....

Kosovo, aka Serbia. A country that had no WMDs, never attacked us or any of our allies, and posed no threat to our national security.

The Liar-in Chief could have vomited that shit 3 months ago. Why did he dither so long?

FuckWad, you sorry sack of puss, The 3 months were spent PLANNING. Something your god and savior Jeff Gannons's idiot girlfriend never tried until the so-called Surge. That took 5 years to get right and was the only thing that shit-for-brains ever came close to getting right. It was also the only thing he actually took the time to consult with the people who actually knew what was happening. Far more than 3 months were dicked around before giving the surge a go-ahead.

Another surge but difficult to see what other options were available. Instant withdrawal is not the answer and we have to hope that the military produces some sort of stability there in 20 months that allows us to begin to draw down.

There won't be a full withdrawal as it's not yet time for America to realize that running an empire on credit, hope and fantasy is something it can't afford if it wants to run a prosperous and mostly contented country at home at the same time.

Will the right continue their reflex opposition to anything and everything this administration does and continue their slow suicide march by alienating the military like they have alienated so many other segments of American society? Probably.

Any fool can give a stirring speech to decieve the hearts of gullible people, it takes a true patriot who will stand up for his Country, and citizens to truly make a good leader...

During his one of his many speeches, Americans watched and heard him say that he intended to visit all 57 states.
Most all know that Islam, not America, has 57 states.

We noticed...

During HIS campaign, Americans watched as HE made mockery of our tradition of standing and crossing our heart as the pledge of allegiance was spoken.
He out of four people on the stage, was the only one not honoring our tradition...We noticed.

When President Bush leaned over at ground zero and gently placed a flower on the memorial, HE Obama tossed His flower onto the pile without leaning over...
We noticed.

Every time HE has apologized to other Countries for America's position on issues we have wondered why HE don't share our pride in this Country when HE has heard foreign leaders berate our Country and our beliefs, HE has not defended us...
We noticed.

When HIS Pastor of 20 years Damned America and said that 9/11 was "America's chickens coming home to roost" and HE denighed having heard recriminations of that nature, we wondered how could that be.

When HE later dissociated HIMSELF from that Church and Pastor because it was politically expedient to do so...
We noticed.

When HE announced that HE would transform America, we wondered Why. With all her faults America is still the greatest Country on earth.
If not for America and the good people who built her, HE wouldn't be sitting in the White House.

Prior to HIS election to the highest office in the Country, HE was a Jr Senator from Illinois and from what we can glean from the records available not a remarkable one...
We noticed.

All through HIS campaign and even after almost a year of serving, HE surrounds HIMSELF with individuals, and Czars who are basically unqualified for the positions HE has appointed them to...
Again we noticed,

HE is almost one year into HIS term and every morning millions of Americans wake up to a new horror heaped upon us by HIM.
HE seeks to saddle Americans with a health care/insurance reform package almost no one wants, or knows what it holds, along with Cap and Trade, that will finish bankrupting America...
Again We noticed

We seek by protesting, to let our representives know that we are not in favor of these crippling expenditures, and we are labeled "un-American", racist".... We wonder how we are supposed to let HIM know how fustrated we are. HE manipulates most News Media and tea parties to seem insignificant and isolated...
We noticed.

There were many of us that prayed that as a black President HE could help unite this nation even more. In eleven months HE has done more to destroy this Nation than anyone since 9/11. HE has failed us... We noticed.

Sept 11 is a day of rememberance for all Americans.
HE proposes to make 9/11 a "National service day". While we know HE doesn't share our reverance for 9/11, we pray that history will report HIS proposal for what it it... A disgrace.

Now with broken promises to bring our tired and weary troops home from needless wars, HE without any remorse or explainations for further endangering the lives of our young men calmly announces HE will be sending 30,000 extra troops to Afghanistan on an accelerated timetable...
Again we notice.

When Americans come together again, it will be to remove HIM from office. HE has made a mockery of our Constitution and the office that HE holds.

He has embarrased and denigrated us in foreign visits and policy, HE has bowed before the leaders of our foes, and disgraced our Nation, and our citizens...
Barack H Obama..... WE ALL HAVE NOTICED.

He didn't say that at all. In fact, he named July 2011 as the target date for our exit strategy, which rejects an open-ended commitment.

The shit is not even readable it is so editorialized - I certainly did not read it, only glanced to see what it was.

Vernon, perhaps you should have another mai tai and you could come up with something more colorful than that.

he named July 2011 as the target date for our exit strategy, which rejects an open-ended commitment.

And we all know how good he is at hitting his "target dates." Face it, his purported "rejection of an open-ended commitment" was just enough of a bone to liberals to allow them to keep supporting Obama with a straight face while he ratchets up a war in an extremely un-liberal fashion.

Obama, the war president. Deal with it.

hahahahahahha hillarious.

yes we need to leave afghanistan.

but guess what... a large portion of the country wants to stay and fight the good fight... including every elected republican and all those blue doggies and their constituents including you haters who are spewing the bile from your mouths.

please shut the f up... you guys are the reason we haven't left afghanistan

you are also the reason why it has taken a new president and almost 8 years to up the anti in afghanistan.

you make yourselves look bad.

"Does his time table really mean anything?"

His time table is important because it comes before the next election. Especially since the withdrawal date he set is mid 2011. If at that time we are not beginning a draw down then democratic voters have time to decide whether to continue to support Obama or put that support behind a primary challenger.

Somebody ban this poster please

Good speech, and I like that the president laid out what appears to be a clear mission for the additional troops, but I'm still highly skeptical this will work. I hope he proves me wrong.

If we had focused on Afghanistan the way we needed to from the start, we might have been able to get out before now. But what can be accomplished in the next year and a half that we haven't accomplished in the first eight years? Look at Iraq: How long have we been trying to train Iraqi forces to take over from us? Although there are signs that we've made some progress on that front, it's still going on.

Of course I'm concerned about the cost issue - both in dollars and in lives - as well.

Obama is taking a big risk. Let's hope the advice he's gotten from the military is sound and his new strategy works out, for America's sake.

the strategy should include marrying off the daughters of the warlords to various womanizing (majority of male) congressman.

This way we can win in afghanistan, alexander the great style. :) haha

Searching in Vain for the Obama Magic
Gabor Steingart

President Barack Obama's Tuesday speech left a bad taste in many mouths.
Never before has a speech by President Barack Obama felt as false as his Tuesday address announcing America's new strategy for Afghanistan. It seemed like a campaign speech combined with Bush rhetoric -- and left both dreamers and realists feeling distraught.

One can hardly blame the West Point leadership. The academy commanders did their best to ensure that Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama's speech would be well-received.

Just minutes before the president took the stage inside Eisenhower Hall, the gathered cadets were asked to respond "enthusiastically" to the speech. But it didn't help: The soldiers' reception was cool.

One didn't have to be a cadet on Tuesday to feel a bit of nausea upon hearing Obama's speech. It was the least truthful address that he has ever held. He spoke of responsibility, but almost every sentence smelled of party tactics. He demanded sacrifice, but he was unable to say what it was for exactly.

An additional 30,000 US soldiers are to march into Afghanistan -- and then they will march right back out again. America is going to war -- and from there it will continue ahead to peace. It was the speech of a Nobel War Prize laureate.

Just in Time for the Campaign

For each troop movement, Obama had a number to match. US strength in Afghanistan will be tripled relative to the Bush years, a fact that is sure to impress hawks in America. But just 18 months later, just in time for Obama's re-election campaign, the horror of war is to end and the draw down will begin. The doves of peace will be let free.

The speech continued in that vein. It was as though Obama had taken one of his old campaign speeches and merged it with a text from the library of ex-President George W. Bush. Extremists kill in the name of Islam, he said, before adding that it is one of the "world's great religions." He promised that responsibility for the country's security would soon be transferred to the government of President Hamid Karzai -- a government which he said was "corrupt." The Taliban is dangerous and growing stronger. But "America will have to show our strength in the way that we end wars," he added.

It was a dizzying combination of surge and withdrawal, of marching to and fro. The fast pace was reminiscent of plays about the French revolution: Troops enter from the right to loud cannon fire and then they exit to the left. And at the end, the dead are left on stage.

Obama's Magic No Longer Works

But in this case, the public was more disturbed than entertained. Indeed, one could see the phenomenon in a number of places in recent weeks: Obama's magic no longer works. The allure of his words has grown weaker.

It is not he himself who has changed, but rather the benchmark used to evaluate him. For a president, the unit of measurement is real life. A leader is seen by citizens through the prism of their lives -- their job, their household budget, where they live and suffer. And, in the case of the war on terror, where they sometimes die.

Political dreams and yearnings for the future belong elsewhere. That was where the political charmer Obama was able to successfully capture the imaginations of millions of voters. It is a place where campaigners -- particularly those with a talent for oration -- are fond of taking refuge. It is also where Obama set up his campaign headquarters, in an enormous tent called "Hope."

In his speech on America's new Afghanistan strategy, Obama tried to speak to both places. It was two speeches in one. That is why it felt so false. Both dreamers and realists were left feeling distraught.

The American president doesn't need any opponents at the moment. He's already got himself.

ouch!!!!

I just read a nice analysis from Thomas Friedman, who apparently wrote his piece before the speech was delivered. Still works, though.

www.nytimes.com

"This I believe

"Let me start with the bottom line and then tell you how I got there: I can't agree with President Obama's decision to escalate in Afghanistan. I'd prefer a minimalist approach, working with tribal leaders the way we did to overthrow the Taliban regime in the first place. Given our need for nation-building at home right now, I am ready to live with a little less security and a little-less-perfect Afghanistan.

"I recognize that there are legitimate arguments on the other side. At a lunch on Tuesday for opinion writers, the president lucidly argued that opting for a surge now to help Afghans rebuild their army and state into something decent to win the allegiance of the Afghan people offered the only hope of creating an "inflection point," a game changer, to bring long-term stability to that region. May it be so. What makes me wary about this plan is how many moving parts there are Afghans, Pakistanis and NATO allies all have to behave forever differently for this to work.

"But here is the broader context in which I assess all this: My own foreign policy thinking since 9/11 has been based on four pillars:

"1. The Warren Buffett principle: Everything I've ever gotten in life is largely due to the fact that I was born in this country, America, at this time with these opportunities for its citizens. It is the primary obligation of our generation to turn over a similar America to our kids.

"2. Many big bad things happen in the world without America, but not a lot of big good things. If we become weak and enfeebled by economic decline and debt, as we slowly are, America may not be able to play its historic stabilizing role in the world. If you didn't like a world of too-strong-America, you will really not like a world of too-weak-America where China, Russia and Iran set more of the rules.

"3. The context within which people live their lives shapes everything from their political outlook to their religious one. The reason there are so many frustrated and angry people in the Arab-Muslim world, lashing out first at their own governments and secondarily at us and volunteering for "martyrdom" is because of the context within which they live their lives. That was best summarized by the U.N.'s Arab Human Development reports as a context dominated by three deficits: a deficit of freedom, a deficit of education and a deficit of women's empowerment. The reason India, with the world's second-largest population of Muslims, has a thriving Muslim minority (albeit with grievances but with no prisoners in Guantnamo Bay) is because of the context of pluralism and democracy it has built at home.

"4. One of the main reasons the Arab-Muslim world has been so resistant to internally driven political reform is because vast oil reserves allow its regimes to become permanently ensconced in power, by just capturing the oil tap, and then using the money to fund vast security and intelligence networks that quash any popular movement. Look at Iran."
...

Friedman, continued.

"Hence, post-9/11 I advocated that our politicians find sufficient courage to hike gasoline taxes and seriously commit ourselves to developing alternatives to oil. Economists agree that this would ultimately bring down the global price, and slowly deprive these regimes of the sole funding source that allows them to maintain their authoritarian societies. People do not change when we tell them they should; they change when their context tells them they must.

"To me, the most important reason for the Iraq war was never W.M.D. It was to see if we could partner with Iraqis to help them build something that does not exist in the modern Arab world: a state, a context, where the constituent communities Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds write their own social contract for how to live together without an iron fist from above. Iraq has proved staggeringly expensive and hugely painful. The mistakes we made should humble anyone about nation-building in Afghanistan. It does me.

"Still, the Iraq war may give birth to something important if Iraqis can find that self-sustaining formula to live together. Alas, that is still in doubt. If they can, the model would have a huge impact on the Arab world. Baghdad is a great Arab capital. If Iraqis fail, it's religious strife, economic decline and authoritarianism as far as the eye can see the witch's brew that spawns terrorists.

"Iraq was about "the war on terrorism." The Afghanistan invasion, for me, was about the "war on terrorists." To me, it was about getting bin Laden and depriving Al Qaeda of a sanctuary period. I never thought we could make Afghanistan into Norway and even if we did, it would not resonate beyond its borders the way Iraq might.

"To now make Afghanistan part of the "war on terrorism" i.e., another nation-building project is not crazy. It is just too expensive, when balanced against our needs for nation-building in America, so that we will have the strength to play our broader global role. Hence, my desire to keep our presence in Afghanistan limited. That is what I believe. That is why I believe it."

I thought that it was a 'slap in the face' West Point to let this guy speak in one of our most prestigious institutions in America to people that he personally will never be able to identify with on any level..!!!
Second, this is not a war that we can win...worse than Viet Nam...the right decision would have been to bring the troops home and start rebuilding on American soil to engage any security issues to us.
This administration is so far out of it's ability and league that the danger to our economy has taken another direct hit. And, to listen to him and his 'look at me' rhetoric last night only confirms the weakness brought to our WH..
A military life has only become a nuisance of collateral damage to this man and his posse..and, not to even think of the dollars wasted on top of this, though the life of each soldier is far more of a loss than any dollars.
Sad that America has come to this...sad, sad, sad.!!

War is NEVER a solution.
War has NEVER resolved disputes.
War is ALWAYS wrong.-Spud

WRONG. WWII resolved disputes between countries very well. After things were resolved America, Germany, and Japan became allies and friends.

WWII was also a solution to the horrible truth of what the Nazis were doing to Jews, Polish, Russians, Gypsies, and others. It was the only solution to ending that.

You also say war is wrong. Was it wrong for us to go to the aide of others in Europe, twice? Was it wrong for us to attack the people who attacked us on 9/11? War is despicable, but regrettably it is a part of life, and it will always remain that way.

I heard the recap of the speech, and all I can say is "goddammit!" He could have given the same speech a year ago, and I would've said the same thing. As long as the Taliban and Al Qaeda exist, the US can and will come up with a line of reasoning for keeping the troops fighting over there. Terrorist organizations won't be completely eliminated as long as you have crazy regimes in the mideast like Saudi Arabia and Iran. It's all about the damned oil pipeline.

Obama: "We Did Not Ask for This Fight"
Bush: "We Did Not Seek This Conflict"

Obama: "New Attacks are Being Plotted as I Speak"
Bush: "At This Moment ... Terrorists are Planning New Attacks"

Obama: "Our Cause is Just, Our Resolve Unwavering"
Bush: "Our Cause is Just, Our Coalition [is] Determined"

Obama: "This Is No Idle Danger, No Hypothetical Threat"
Bush: "The Enemies of Freedom Are Not Idle"

Obama: "We Have No Interest in Occupying Your Country"
Bush: "I Wouldn't Be Happy if I Were Occupied Either"

Now that has to really sting the average far left libtard....
.

We all know we are going to leave Afghanistan someday. Why not tell them the date so they can prepare for the stability of their own country? Is it better to surprise them?

#74 | Posted by rcade

Come now. There would be no surprise. Like one day our generals are just going to go up to them and say, hey we're leaving now. A timetable for withdrawal is dangerous and stupid. We would make them aware of our leaving in plenty of time for them to be prepared for it. A timetable lets the enemy know exactly when we are leaving and they are the ones who will be prepared.

Post #122...these two are actually more alike than people want to realize..!!!

Post #122...these two are actually more alike than people want to realize..!!!

not wanting to realize but being reluctantly willing is one thing, but not wanting and actively refusing is quite another. And what do you say about those who want it and actively lobby for it?

Or maybe they could get their own shit together and then we could leave. But instead we've posted a retreat date, conveniently just before the next election, so everyone knows how long they can keep killing American soldiers. I'm sure this would have worked great in WWII, three years, that's it, then everyone comes home.

Obama, the war president. Deal with it.

Peace Prize Material'

As much as I dislike John McCain, I do think he has hit the nail on the head in his assessment of "WHY" June 2011 is the date for leaving A-stan. It's an election year and Rahm Emmanuel has determined to use the withdrawal to shore up support from the left for the 2012 elections.

Oh, I always thought Spud used the Skip name sometimes too. My mistake. Thanks for letting me know.

Wonder when he's going to send the codes for the red phone to the sawooooooodis?

I see a lot of whining from the usual suspects who spent 7 years blindly supporting what all now recognize as the mlitary failures that characterize the Bush Administration. That, in itself, should embarrass them into not pretending they know anything about mlitary matters. But at least they aren't offering different strategies, just the usual-If a Republican does it, its a Mission Accomplished and we stay the course, if a Democrat does it, we stomp our feet and say No!

btw has Ace McCain told anybody his super secret way to catch Osama yet? I'm guessing a snatch and grab at the next Bush family Christmas party.

My first question is: When in the hell did the left turn on Afghanistan? This was supposed to be the 'just' war.

Anyhow, Obama was thrust into an impossible situation and I personally feel he navigated it as well as he could.

Afghanistan is now his war. I urge all sides (and that includes disillusioned lefties who seem to have been clamoring for an embarassing defeat) to have patience and see how his strategy pans out.

no protesters, starting to think it was never about the war just about george bush.just 3 protesters from code pink,no cindy,no george sorehole, just silence from the left and when will sean penn and the hollywood crowd start pumping out anti Afghanistan war movies?

The cadets looked bored--not inspired.

I am glad he is sending troops in--per the request of the generals. Finally!! He made a decision after 3 months!

But the timeline is a political contrivence.

If the realities on the ground dictate a longer stay--what does he do? March them out any way?

And he never said the word 'Victory'.

And he wouldn't even say what success would look like.

SKIP WELLINGTON: "FACT: War is NEVER a solution.
War has NEVER resolved disputes.
War is ALWAYS wrong.
Be Well."

Tell that to the Carthaginians.

Time will tell whether this is anything different from another Viet Nam.

From last night's speech:

"Just as we have done in Iraq, we will execute this transition responsibly, taking into account conditions on the ground. We will continue to advise and assist Afghanistan's Security Forces to ensure that they can succeed over the long haul. But it will be clear to the Afghan government - and, more importantly, to the Afghan people - that they will ultimately be responsible for their own country."

The GOP are babbling about ... what again?

Didn't we hear our troops would be home in weeks, months from Iraq? Hmmm

I thought that it was a 'slap in the face' West Point to let this guy speak in one of our most prestigious institutions in America to people that he personally will never be able to identify with on any level..!!! -- #119 | Posted by drsoul

Y'know, we may NEVER again have a CiC with military experience? It's pretty rare for anyone on track to be president to enlist voluntarily, and the last draft was VietNam.

(Was thinking about this last night, after Chair said close to the same thing.)

Phoenix,
Most wars also have so much controversy around them today that it is just military service can be just as much of a liability as an asset. Look at McCain vs Bush.

Bob McDonnell or Jim Webb... -- #141 | Posted by STIRSUMUP

I've long thought Webb was one of the Dem Party's better bets, but he doesn't seem to aspire to higher office.

There may also be other career military (a la Colin Powell) who turn to political careers. Still, the possibilities are already rare and will only get rarer.

It like this folks..I uh, uh, uh took four, months to come to uh uh uh this uh decision to uh send more men to uh uh uh a war i uh dont uh believe we can win but uh uh uh, it makes me uh seem uh uh strong.

Both sides played hard.

Rule number one of our government: values are only worth standing by when trying to get elected. Once elected, values tend to get in the way.

I've long thought Webb was one of the Dem Party's better bets, but he doesn't seem to aspire to higher office.

Webb actually seems to have a pretty good grasp of the issues. But he seems to lack the temperment for the job. Plus, if memory serves me he has a little baggage also. IMO, what we need is to get rid of the Beltway Beauracrats that have controlled Washington for decades. The problem is that we only send a few new representatives to Washington at a time. And they have very little power initially because the "good old boys and girls" will not allow it until they insure that the new guys are going to play along. Basically, it's a lot like New Orleans politics. You can't trust anyone who doesn't owe you. Thus, by the time the new Reps get into a position to actually do anything, they are just as bad and corrupt as the person they replaced. IMO, the only way to solve the problem is to enact term limits. People like Kenedy, Pelosi, McCain, and the old guy from one of the Carolina's are the problem. I can not beleive that they actually gave that guy an award for getting elected so many times. That's just wrong and he and they should be ashamed. But then again, to have shame, one must first have integrity.

Webb... if memory serves me he has a little baggage also. -- #146 | Posted by bogey1355

The baggage I know about has been debunked: www.factcheck.org , search for "Webb."

The baggage I know about has been debunked:

I was refering to his notorious hot temper when he was SecNav. Seems I remember him having a proclivity for flying off the handle. Not exactly the thing you want in a CiC. But maybe he is older and wiser now.

I was refering to his notorious hot temper .. #148 | Posted by bogey1355

Didn't keep McCain from being a contender or B. Clinton from serving 2 terms.

Never before has a speech by President Barack Obama felt as false

MSNBC Chris Matthews calls West Point the 'enemy camp'...

You mean this Chris Matthews, better known as Tweety?
He only likes aWol warriors and chickenhawk neocons....eh?

"We're all neo-cons now."
(MSNBC's Chris Matthews, 4/9/03)

"We're proud of our president. Americans love having a guy as president, a guy who has a little swagger, who's physical, who's not a complicated guy like Clinton or even like Dukakis or Mondale, all those guys, McGovern. They want a guy who's president. Women like a guy who's president. Check it out. The women like this war. I think we like having a hero as our president. It's simple. We're not like the Brits."

I totally agree with these statements, with the exception that it is now Obama's war....only in the sense that he must be the one to FIX it, eh, because from 911 thru Afghanistan and iraqnam, it will always and forever be written as George W. Bush and Richard Cheney's "legacies", no?

My first question is: When in the hell did the left turn on Afghanistan? This was supposed to be the 'just' war.

When the shit is soo FUBARRED how can You justify sending more folks into a lost cause because it is so FUBARRED.

just wondering li'l buddy . . .

Why does Pres Obama now speak like Thurston Howell III??

does Michelle role play Ginger or Maryanne??

President Obama's lack of leadership experience is shining through right now. He has no idea how to lead and inspire men, let alone a nation. The future leaders of our great armed forces looked absolutely bored (some were even sleeping) by his professorial and contradictory speech.

I give him credit for trying to do the right thing by fighting this war. However, his miserable failure by calling for a withdrawal before the troops even leave is laughable.

He is not a leader of men. He is someone who knows how to campaign (ie talk out of both sides of his mouth) but no clue how to govern. Even his base is starting to desert him.

does Michelle role play Ginger or Maryanne??

Only in wingding land are measurable benchmarks, goals, and objectives considered unnecessary.

This is very ironic considering they claim to be business minded and the "party of small business". No wonder they loved so much the MBA president who never met a business he didn't destroy.

Hopefully this thread will suffice for the latest Clinton/Gates testimony on the subject.

Gates and Clinton teamed up with Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, during testimony today on Capitol Hill. "The three faced questions today from Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on whether al-Qaeda's diminished strength in Afghanistan negated the need for deepening U.S. involvement.

It is really pathetic to drag out the govt and corporate media created mirage known as al-Qaeda once again and prop it up like a scarecrow. It's not going to work. Most Americans, except a few unrecanting neocons are sick and tired of this war against the people of Afghanistan. The retread Clinton-Gates-Mullen trio certainly will not convince them otherwise.

The story is all too familiar It is the same nonsense used by the Bush neocons to defend their twin mass murder campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Back in September recall that top commander of U.S. and international forces in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, said he saw no "indications of a large al-Qaida presence in Afghanistan."

Perhaps since McChrystal's comment the CIA and Pentagon were determined to make their case. Bring in a fresh batch of patsies? Bring in a few more "foreign" helicopters were dispatched as they were earlier this year to ferry in fresh new Taliban troops?
