Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Ireland's police force colluded with the Catholic church to cover up clerical child abuse in Dublin on a huge scale, according to a report on decades of sex crimes committed by the country's priests. The report found that "maintenance of secrecy, the avoidance of scandal, the protection of the reputation of the church and the preservation of its assets" were more important than justice for the victims of sexual and physical abuse. "As a father and as a member of this community, I felt a growing sense of revulsion and anger at the horrible, evil acts committed against children," said Irish justice minister Dermot Ahern.

they are taking "judge not" to a ridiculous end.

Congrats! -- you've successfully navigated to the guardian for yet another article on the catholic church sex abuse scandal -- and posted it on a liberal blog to incite the local feeding frenzy.

That was so early 2000s!

The few retorts that will inevitably show up will chastise everything catholic but will also epitomize the idiom "to throw out the baby with the bath water".

The CC has been marginalized for sure but to forget the good (actually great) they have done and continue to do makes you sound like a hack.

But that's what this site is for, yes?

Enjoy!

Of course there was a coverup by police in Ireland over the RC Church pedo sex scandals.

There was in almost every country to one degree or another.

The fact that there is definitive evidence coming out here is wot makes this story so particularly newsworthy.

Be Well.

a hack? wow, I guess i missed the news article that the pope turned over his criminal priests to the authorities and condemmed child abuse. And offered all assistance possible to root it out of the church. The shame of that organization is beyond belief. a hack? no, you are a fool

"The fact that there is definitive evidence coming out here is wot makes this story so particularly newsworthy."

One could make the same argument for the AGW scam, but I guess "more" evidence is required to take that one serious.

"The shame of that organization is beyond belief."

This was my central point, einstein.

The CC has been brought out onto the public square and flogged...repeatedly.

Are you aware of the steps taken to ensure something like that never happens again?

But to my point -- the CC has done immeasurable good for the world. Don't ever forget that.

One more time, I guess i missed the announcement that the pope has turned over the priests in question ad has stopped the policy of hiding them. Or maybe, he didnt do it? hmmm tell us please how cooperative the church has been? they continue the path of shame

"hmmm tell us please how cooperative the church has been?"

Once again, einstein. It's called a search engine...

"The Christian Brothers accept, with shame, the findings of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse ... The congregation is deeply sorry for the hurt we have caused - not just for the mistakes of the past, but for the inadequacy of our responses over recent years."

"In late November 2009 the organisation announced they would supply a 161 million (145 million sterling) package as part of reparations for child abuse in Ireland. This includes a donation of 30 million to a government trust and 4 million donated to provide counselling services. Playing fields owned by the organisation and valued at 127 million would be transferred to joint ownership of the government and the trust that runs former Christian Brothers schools.

And that's just one organization. Need me to find more info for you? How about a nice glass of warm milk?

how many priests have been turned over by thw vatican? Stop your BS Answer none. Have they cooperated with authories? no How many bankruptcies have they filed in order to avoid their day in court? The church is right up there with Bernie Madoff, worldcom and enron. A corupt selserving fleecer of the public sheep and a world criminal

if roman polanski had been a catholic priest he would still be in Los Angeles, raping children

And another...

"The Los Angeles Archdiocese July 15 announced the largest church settlement of sexual abuse lawsuits to date, agreeing to pay more than 500 alleged victims a total of $660 million."

"Although financial compensation in itself is inadequate to make up for the harm done to the victims and their families, still this compensation does provide a meaningful outreach to assist the victims to rebuild their lives and to move forward," he said.

He said the settlement agreement, "with the sacrifices it requires," is also a sign of the seriousness with which the church "has committed itself to doing everything possible to avoid a repetition of such wicked acts."

"I'd like to say that the church would have been reformed without these cases, but I don't know that's true," he said. "These cases have forever reformed the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It will never be the same."

How about a petition to change your name to GEORGEISADRUNKDUMBFUCK?

happy how many priests turned over? cant handle that one can you. Answer none. All hidden and protected by the ex nazi youth member

"cant handle that one can you."

Can't handle what? That the church has tried to shield the priests? No argument there. But they have done what every capitalist wants and that's to pay through the nose for all the allegations, truthful or not.

Now, in you most liberal, compassionate and tolerant drunken nature, can you at least agree that paying billions of dollars is a first step towards reparations?

And on that, do you have equal outrage over the knowledge that sex abuse is higher in almost every other venue (high schools, protestant church) than the CC.

How about a petition to change your name to GEORGEISADRUNKDUMBFUCK?

You do realise that the George that nom de blog refers to is George Bush, right?

In which case he should change it to GEORGEISADRUNKDUMBFUCK /SELFLOATHINGCLOSETCASE/ COKEHEAD/ FAILURE/ WARCRIMINAL.

But that would be unwieldy.

True but still too wordy.

Citing examples that the Catholic Church after decades of systemic abuse of minors and subsequent coverups finally got around to paying it's victims only after being forced to by a full governmental inquiry is not proof of CC cooperation.

Quite the opposite, in fact.

Be Well.

"You do realise..."

Realize? Yes. Care? No.

"Citing examples that the Catholic Church after decades of systemic abuse of minors and subsequent coverups..."

Of course it's cooperation. Hand in the fucking cookie jar. They got busted and to save face they're paying billions.

Name another group that is doing so. The military? High schools? Colleges? Prison system? Protestant churches?

Didn't think so.

Is the CC serious in their reparations? I think they are. I'm pretty sure they can't wait for all the incriminated priests to die off and put this era to an end. But there has been worse things amongst the CC and they survived because a few failed mortals can't destroy what the CC represents. That will live on.

...the CC has done immeasurable good for the world. -- #7 | Posted by happyending

HE, I was raised Catholic and know I'm incredibly lucky to have been educated by radical nuns (really!) in an excellent Catholic school.

But the current Pope seems determined to quash everything about the Catholic Church that is good. He's trying to drive community-oriented nuns back into habits and convents -- www.nytimes.com . His overtures to the Church of England are motivated by the worst elements among its members -- sexism and homophobia. www.timesonline.co.uk Reviving anti-birth control hysteria when increases in BOTH poverty and AIDS are likely results is appalling.

The Church has done a lot of good when social justice is a priority, but this pope cares only about mindless rules.

But to my point -- the CC has done immeasurable good for the world. Don't ever forget that.

The Catholic Church's interest in the well-being of others is a welcome but fairly recent invention. We need the Vatican as a voice for social justice, not a city full of pontificating fools who care only for the preservation of their own dogma.

For every Mother Teresa in history, there have been a dozen Torquemadas. For the bulk of its existence, the Church has been a tyrannical entity responsible for genocide on scales not exceeded until the 20th century. Don't ever forget that, chump.

Huh? That's about the most illiterate thing posted today.

Think pre-middle ages, punk. Recent enough?

"For every Mother Teresa in history, there have been a dozen Torquemadas."

Link?

Ah, why bother.

You're amongst your brethren. Why bother with facts?

you are very dirty mouthed and insulting for a christian. oh i forgot, you are a catholic

Christians are truly evil.

"For every Mother Teresa in history, there have been a dozen Torquemadas. For the bulk of its existence, the Church has been a tyrannical entity responsible for genocide on scales not exceeded until the 20th century. Don't ever forget that, chump."

Yea well, it was out there fighting a battle for the heart of civilization for a long stretch of the time you describe chump. Remember, after the fall of the Roman empire, there was nothing more holding the last bastions of Western civilation than the Roman Catholic church, started in the 400's and a few brave souls such as Charlamange and his sort holding on.

And in the next breath I will assure you that there are those unseen unheard from clergy who work all over the world with the poor, the imprisoned, the lost everywhere who don't advertise it because that is not why they are doing it. The do it for God.

The dark side of the church has been exposed. If it cost everything the church has to make good on the sins of those who were trusted with the power I am all for it.

There will be people of real purity of spirit there to bring it back.

I've seen them and the work they do every day.

Prior to the necessity of hospitals the Catholic church under direction of the Pope is responsible for wiping out sciences such as herbal knowledge claiming it "Satanic" and "anti-Christian", murdering practitioners, their friends, families and discouraging it's education for centuries. To the church "diseases occur to those with wicked hearts or who are in league with the Devil" making it far easier to eliminate those who oppose their nonsense and control global politics, instigate wars and promote obedience. They have ordered people burned alive, gutted, stoned, pulled-apart and tortured into meaningless confessions. The Dark Ages were labeled such for a good reason - the light of knowledge was extinguished by religious intolerance from Catholics and Muslims arrogant, ignorant zealotry. Catholicism and Islam were used to promote genocide, torture and enslavement more than they were spread for Jesus and Mohammad encouraging peace.

The Catholic hierarchy of today are still no better than any other people of "faith" - but are particularly worse at confessing their sins in light of truth. Imo, all people need to absolve ourselves of any and all religious authority.

Also, I'm fairly certain Einstein's name is capitalized. Employ your shift key as needed.

What many of you fail to realize is that we as tax payers are paying for these pay offs by providing tax exempt status to the Church. It is time we review this as it is becoming clear that they are engaged in political activity. The removal of abortion payments from the new health care plan is clear evidence of this.

I grew up in the catholic church, left at 18yrs old, never looked back.

nothing ever happened to me personally but even as a young child I knew there were things going on that weren't right.

Get off your your soap box for the vatican and OWN IT BITCH.

THe church was a haven for child molesters... and the nut-less leadership would rather it go unexposed rather than loose face.... Ahem, oh and money too.

One could make the same argument for the AGW scam, but I guess "more" evidence is required to take that one serious.

Are you seriously that friggin apologetic for the evil that the Catholic Church has brought the world?

Why do you feel you need to change the subject matter of this thread?

Very informative post there, for someone who's open to a history lesson.
I can't help but notice HappyEnding hasn't chosen to volley.

I wish there was an idiot flag for Unhappy ending.

"Prior to the necessity of hospitals..."

History lesson time, again, huh?

"The adoption of Christianity as the state religion of the Roman Empire drove an expansion of the provision of care. The First Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. urged the church to provide for the poor, sick, widows, and strangers."

"Get off your your soap box for the vatican..."

No soap box. I don't give too much to them anymore as I'm not interested in funding their payouts. Just pointing out the inconsistency for the drooling tools at the DR. The CC is not all about sex abuse.

"Why do you feel you need to change..."

Yeah, right.

"I can't help but notice HappyEnding hasn't chosen to volley."

Ummm...it's more like having a life outside of your cosmopolitan existence on the DR. Liek I am going to sit around all day and waste time trying to school you lemons.

But again, try to get more points of view other than the drivel of your DR peers. Like a book.

Enjoy!

"I wish there was an idiot flag for Unhappy ending."

There is, but this one also works for any jackass.

"Ronald Numbers states that misconceptions such as "the Church prohibited autopsies and dissections during the Middle Ages", "the rise of Christianity killed off ancient science", and "the medieval Christian church suppressed the growth of natural philosophy" are examples of widely popular myths that still pass as historical truth, although they are not supported by current historical research."

Ha Ha! I can cut-n-paste too!

But the main difference between me and you is that I have an opposable thumb and use it to help navigate me to information other than regurgitating what was thrown around at the double-wide, like the situation you find yourself in.

#14 That the church has tried to shield the priests? No argument there

holy gloss over batman

we are talking about aiding and abetting mass pedophiles.

criminal conspiracy.

they should all be in prison.

"we are talking about aiding and abetting mass pedophiles."

Happens everyday (in more numbers than in the CC) in high schools, colleges, military, prisons, etc.

Where is your outrage there?

It's not -- because they don't involve the hated Catholics.

Take your faux-rage elsewhere.

"Happens everyday (in more numbers than in the CC) in high schools, colleges, military, prisons, etc."

Link?

hmmmm all those institutions are the same as the cc?

lets look at them

high schools-while there are certainly instances of child abuse there is no systematic program to protect the pepetrators

college-ummm not talking about children. legally between 2 consenting adults. there is an issue over a teacher and their student ie manipulating role of authority, but we are speaking of consenting adults, yes date rape is also a problem on colleges, but there is no conspiracy to protect the rapists.

military-again not children,

prisons-again not children

Link?

"According to the NPREC study, in 2007, "an estimated 60,500 State and Federal prisoners were sexually abused during [the previous] 12-month period."

60K in 12 months? Can you show me where the CC engaged in anything even remotely close to that?

Need more info?

"...again not children"

Oh, I get it. It's all about the children.

"...former Planned Parenthood director Abbey Joohnson who quit her position and became pro-life after assisting with an ultrasound abortion and watching the baby in the womb seeking to avoid death"

There is something so consistent about your inconsistency.

Again, faux-outrage.

>there is no systematic program to protect the pepetrators

"USA TODAY As many as one in 10 public school students is sexually harassed or abused at some point by a teacher or other school worker, the first large-scale study on the topic suggests."

1 in 10 and there is no "program" to protect the perps?

Link?

"The Pentagon only started a comprehensive program to track incidents in 2006, and only after Congress mandated it do so.

That year there were 2,974 cases of rape and sexual assault across the services. And of those, only 292 cases resulted in a military trial."

Nearly 3K in one year? Say it isn't so! Oh, I forgot, it's all "'bout the chillins".

Again, faux-rage. You don't give a fuck about the children. As long as you have the big-bad boogey-CC to focus your hate, it's all good.

"college - but we are speaking of consenting adults..."

Ummm, no einstein. That's the point. One is not consenting, even if an adult, if it is abuse.

Ketchup!

Tool

If you are trying to argue that the CC is no better than any other institution, despite their claim to the "Power of God" you've accomplished that task.

"If you are trying to argue that the CC is no better than any other institution..."

You chose the power trip. All I am "arguing", from my first post on, is the baby-bath water idiom.

Yes, the CC screwed up -- never hid from that fact. But the rabid DR can not see the forest for the trees (loves idioms).

And clearly, with all the frothing and drooling about the CC, it's obvious that it has nothing really to do w/ the CC in the wake of evidence how they routinely, each day, behind the scenes, in every country, provide for the weakest of the weak.

Who else can claim that? Who else wants that claim?

It's about anti-religion in general. If you can't muster the balls to admit it, that's not my problem.

Anti religion or anti hypocrisy?

Catholics are slightly more likely to get an abortion than Protestants, according to a 2000-2001 survey.

The survey, the latest conducted by the Alan Guttmacher Institute, was completed by more than 10,000 women. Staffers in hospitals, clinics and physicians' offices where abortions are performed distributed the questionnaire. The Guttmacher Institute, which researches sexual and reproductive health worldwide, says it used the survey data along with data on the number of abortions performed nationally to estimate abortion rates and the size of certain demographic groups.

The institute found that more Protestant women obtained abortions than Catholics: Forty-three percent of women over age 17 in the 2000-2001 survey said they were Protestant, while 27 percent said they were Catholic.

But Catholics were more likely to get an abortion: The abortion rate for Catholic women was 22 per 1,000 women; the rate for Protestants was 18 per 1,000 women, according to study author Rachel K. Jones.

www.factcheck.org askfact...frequently.html

Physician, heal thyself

"anti hypocrisy"

Are you serious? First it's all about the children, now it's about being a hypocrite?

Talk about a moving target...

Start w/ the assumption that we're all sinners, and catholic women getting an abortion becomes elementary.

But since you brought it up...

Show me exactly where in the constitution there is a right to privacy which invokes a right to terminate a life inside a women.

Talk about hypocrisy...

Any questions about why we need that pesky separation of church and state? Why Dobson and the GOPper's desired theocracy is a bad idea?

Yes, hypocrisy....

The hypocrisy lies in a church that PREACHES to others about the "sanctity of life", yet cannot stop it's own from having abortions, while denouncing birth control......AND cannot stop it's own leaders from being pedophiles AND protecting pedophiles from the law.

Physician, heal thyself.

happy

when you can demonstrate that any of those institiutions systematically from top to bottom conspired for decades to hide the criminal activity of their participants in what is probably the worst non murder crime there is, we can talk.

fwiw, those other issues, prisons, military etc are outrageous and have to be addressed

however, the point stands that priests are trusted with people's most intimate of needs and betrayed that trust in the most vile manner

of course why anyone would trust a deviant (i.e someone who takes a oath of abstinence) is beyond me.

Start w/ the assumption that we're all sinners...

and here we get to essence of what is wrong with the cc.

there is no such thing as sin

there is only the consequence of our actions

"there is only the consequence of our actions"

That's just semantics and you know it.

"trust a deviant"

How about every person that aspires to political office? I think each and every one of them are deviant. Should they be trusted more than anyone else?

You have your religion, I have mine. But again, it's just semantics -- you won't dare call yours a religion.

"yet cannot stop it's own"

How many times have we all heard how you can't stop human nature on this blog? Every fucking day??? So the fact that some institution argues for some direction -- and people blow them off -- indicts them?

It's like buffalo bob arguing that we "need" to control the climate. Fact check, drudgies -- you can't control ANYTHING!

As stated before, the inconsistency on this blog is laughingly consistent.

And your hypocrisy in railing at DR posters here, while ignoring the FACTS about the cc preaching one thing and doing another, is pretty funny, too.

Funny, weird, not funny haha, that is....

Again, faux-outrage.

Happy, a child molester is a child molester but there is somewhat a difference between the sicko down the street that would take full advantage of a child vs. the "church". Just in case you are too dull to understand that the church should have a higher standard that the average shithead that would harm a child. So, no, the outrage experienced by people (especially past members) isn't "faux" .

I don't give too much to them anymore as I'm not interested in funding their payouts. Just pointing out the inconsistency for the drooling tools

How much do you give???? enough to satisfy your membership?

Happy, you're the only one "drooling" and you're a tool of the church.

As I said, OWN IT.

Looks like some asshole spammer got through Rcade's defenses.

" some asshole spammer "

Sometimes we can all agree on something.
This is one of those times.

It was the Catholic Church that established the dogma that slow ate away the FOUNDATION of social acceptance of slavery.

The Catholic Church and NOTHING ELSE is responsible for that early work that all later anti-slavery work was based on.

For centuries it was ONLY Catholic dogma that kept witch hunting SURPRESSED (Charlamagne personally promised to hang anyone who used 'witchcraft' charges to justify a crime, and he was only one voice over a period centuries.....). Sadly, the church was not able to root out the superstitious beliefs, and was eventually contaminated by them. It is astonding it took so long.

The roots of the science we use all trace to, or through, Church SUPPORT. The church haters love to cite examples of surpression, but even then, most of those are misrepresented (Galileo had his problem more from HOW he said what said, than WHAT he said. Others were brushing the same ground, but with more manners. In an age of kings, being brillant does not grant immunity for insulting the establishment, especially when others are saying the same sort of stuff WITHOUT being insulting....)

The Church's problems came from getting to tied up in BEING a state. Even the Church knew this was causing problems (See Celestine V). Sadly, as Celestine V proved, once you ARE a great power STATE, you can't go back to being just a Church just by electing a spiritual Pope. You are stuck with Prince/Popes until you are no longer a major State.

Try, for just a moment, to entertain the idea that many people from all walks of life in the past were NOT cynical sexually twisted monsters, and were actually in many cases simply admirable people.

While I realize there were a lot of good people in the CC, I find it very hard to beleive the majority were "Simply admirable" when you see the results of decades of abuse and cover up.

The sadest part is the fact that the "simply admirable" element are used a fodder..

Of coures the Irish Police helped the Church cover-up. That's because the Irish Police are Catholic and have to obey their priests.
