The Wall Street Journal marks the Thanksgiving holiday with an account from pilgrims who made the crossing to Plymouth in 1620. "Being now passed the vast ocean, and a sea of troubles before them in expectations, they had now no friends to welcome them, no inns to entertain or refresh them, no houses, or much less towns, to repair unto to seek for succour; and for the season it was winter, and they that know the winters of the country know them to be sharp and violent, subject to cruel and fierce storms, dangerous to travel to known places, much more to search unknown coasts." Other than that... got a couple of new family members that should be joining the world in the next month, and I will be seeing them at Christmas. For the freedoms we enjoy in this country. For my health (what there is of it) and, of course, for all the food I am going to consume in the next few days.

Except for the new family members (I have my fill) and cows not flying, I concur with the above. Happy Thanksgiving!

She is an awesome woman-the best cook in Michigan-and makes absolutely no bones about being MY woman.

I'm grateful I got the surgery on my legs over with(I can't be put under for surgery-I HAVE to remain conscious)....and had the procedure THREE TIMES! I've never screamed so much in my life.

I'm grateful to rcade for this Forum.
I'm also grateful for the "Theater of the Absurd"-that takes place here on a daily basis-with right wingers cryin' in their wheaties that this forum isn't run the way THEY want it run-with a right-wing bias.

In 60 years, I have learned to be thankful and content for the blessings in my life.

Learning that it's all good (even those events that don't seem so at the time) and to be content with what is, seems to be the key to happiness in life imo.

Each year at this time school children all over America are taught the official Thanksgiving story, and newspapers, radio, TV, and magazines devote vast amounts of time and space to it. It is all very colorful and fascinating.

It is also very deceiving. This official story is nothing like what really happened. It is a fairy tale, a whitewashed and sanitized collection of half-truths which divert attention away from Thanksgiving's real meaning.

The official story has the pilgrims boarding the Mayflower, coming to America and establishing the Plymouth colony in the winter of 1620-21. This first winter is hard, and half the colonists die. But the survivors are hard working and tenacious, and they learn new farming techniques from the Indians. The harvest of 1621 is bountiful. The Pilgrims hold a celebration, and give thanks to God. They are grateful for the wonderful new abundant land He has given them.

The official story then has the Pilgrims living more or less happily ever after, each year repeating the first Thanksgiving. Other early colonies also have hard times at first, but they soon prosper and adopt the annual tradition of giving thanks for this prosperous new land called America.

The problem with this official story is that the harvest of 1621 was not bountiful, nor were the colonists hardworking or tenacious. 1621 was a famine year and many of the colonists were lazy thieves.

In his 'History of Plymouth Plantation,' the governor of the colony, William Bradford, reported that the colonists went hungry for years, because they refused to work in the fields. They preferred instead to steal food. He says the colony was riddled with "corruption," and with "confusion and discontent." The crops were small because "much was stolen both by night and day, before it became scarce eatable."

In the harvest feasts of 1621 and 1622, "all had their hungry bellies filled," but only briefly. The prevailing condition during those years was not the abundance the official story claims, it was famine and death. The first "Thanksgiving" was not so much a celebration as it was the last meal of condemned men.

But in subsequent years something changes. The harvest of 1623 was different. Suddenly, "instead of famine now God gave them plenty," Bradford wrote, "and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God." Thereafter, he wrote, "any general want or famine hath not been amongst them since to this day." In fact, in 1624, so much food was produced that the colonists were able to begin exporting corn.

What happened?

I heard that line delivered on a SNL Weekend Update in the '70s by Jane Curtin. I think she said that the ghetto folks wanted "comfortable shoes and a warm place to go to the bathroom". Later in the broadcast character Chico Escuela ("base been berry, berry good to me") said he was ready to retire with comfortable shoes and a warm place to go to the bathroom.

Also, in my point is that at times when I believed the worst possible thing had happened in my life, eventually, it turned out to be one of the best things that could have happened. I have begun to see that perhaps what I always thought was "best" for me, hasn't always been so.....

So, now, I try to take it as it comes, accept it as what is and be thankful for whatever blessings and lessons I've been given.

I am thankful for all of the blessings that I have been fortunate enough to receive. I am trhankful for the opportunities I have had and the fruits of my labor. I am most thankful for the single democrat that is wise enough to stand by 40 republicans to save the republic from the enemies within.

If you ever get a chance, go to the reconstructed village of Plimoth (sic) in Massachusetts. The docents dress in period costume and role play the various 17th century pilgrims. There is a Native American village nearby, too--walking distance.

You will feel like you stepped out of a time machine.

Very interesting.

Why does A_citizen declare that when the Federal Government provides Health Care insurance for people who can not be covered for a veritiy of reasons they are declared thieves?? Over the years, we've adulterated the meaning of separation of church and state by the founding fathers--- they were not concerned by the intrusion of religion and ideas into the public forum but were concerned by an established state religion &/or church---once again, time has altered what was a good ideal into irrelevance.

When the Pilgrims first landed they set up a government that could at best be defined as collectivism %/or socialistic communism. When they nearly starved to death because the dems, libs and lazy wouldn't work and were being fed by those who did the work, they changed their system into land ownership and the system then thrived.

The reason Jane sed that that and the original impetus for the clip from that Bil Murray movie that Spud linked to was an infamous racist remark made in 1976 by Earl Butz.

Made aboard a commercial airliner to a group of GOPhers returning from the 76 Rethug Convention.

The group included Pat Boone and John Dean.

Cleaned up and reported by Time magazine it was Butz's second major gaffe (He'd made fun of the Pope a short while earlier) and it resulted in him losing his cabinet post that Nixon had appointed him to.

Butz started by telling a dirty joke involving intercourse between a dog and a skunk. When the conversation turned to politics, Boone, a right-wing Republican, asked Butz why the party of Lincoln was not able to attract more blacks. The Secretary responded with a line so obscene and insulting to blacks that it forced him out of the Cabinet last week and jolted the whole Ford campaign:
