Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Saturday, November 21, 2009

Scientists moved Saturday to prepare the world's largest atom smasher for exploring the depths of matter after successfully restarting the $10 billion machine following more than a year of repairs. Later Saturday the organizers decided to test all the protection equipment while there still is a very low intensity proton beam circulating in the collider at 11,000 times a second. The tests will take 10 days, Gillies said. "We've still got some way to go before physics can begin, but with this milestone we're well on the way," CERN Director General Rolf Heuer said.

I guess dok could stand in front of it and not worry about damage. He can't read, think, f

A hardon collider? WTF is that going to be used for?

So mankind can super-smash particles to find the particle that is not made up of any others. In layman's terms. I'm not a particle physicist but I think it's awesome. Opens up an entire potential for new, clean energy...get the world off the oil teat. "Quarks, nutrinos and bosons, oh my...."

Hey Snippy. This should interest you: Hitting a subatomic particle with another subatomic particle at a significant percentage of the speed of light is like a 'sniper' in Texas riding a horse at full gallop hitting a dime on the moon. Blindfolded.

Only it is somewhat more difficult than that.

Yeah so what, does it bring down the price of gasoline? Nope.

Waste of money.

viagra?

"Large Hadron"?!?!

I thought the title said "Large Hardon"!

Libertarian Lawyer Joe.

A hardon collider? WTF is that going to be used for?

Colliding hadrons.

Expanding human understanding of the conditions immediately following the big band.

Opening a wormhole to Hell.

Annihilating the universe as we know it.

Just depends on who you ask.

Expanding human understanding of the conditions immediately following the big band.--ZH

Was Glen Miller playing? ;o)

Eventually science will render gasoline practically obsolete.

What's that worth?

I suspect the collider will be a dud. The universe had no beginning. Maybe they'll find something else.

the standard nodel is an astonishing tribute to the human mind.

we can have a space race.

we can build bombs and kill millions of people.

we can fork over trillions to fraudsters.

but we cannot feed, educate or provide health care to our weakest citizens.

Great news for Pakistani science! (we made all the magnetic supports of the collider and did all the magnetic alignment)

Now we shall get results.

So??

So??

Pure science... science for the sake of science.... the quest for finding the reality behind our reality... the hunt for the elusive building blocks of nature.... what was the big bang... etc.

These things don't interest you, at all?

we made all the magnetic supports of the collider and did all the magnetic alignment

Really something you want to brag about? The magnets are what has been screwed up for the past year. Did they have to wait on Indian scientist to fix it or what?

Look up "electric universe."

The parts we were responsible for, were not at fault.

Did they have to wait on Indian scientist to fix it or what?

India has had no hand in building the collider, as far as I know.

Anyway... it's a grand thing.

This brings the leadership of high energy particle research to the Europeans.

It would be a great irony if it was this that brought about our own annihilation and not the development and use of large scale weapons.

Of course we wouldn't be around to appreciate that irony.

It would be a great irony if it was this that brought about our own annihilation

You are talking of that same old story of CERN accidentally creating a black hole on earth, doing us all in?

Come on!

You are talking of that same old story of CERN accidentally creating a black hole on earth, doing us all in?

Yes, but not seriously.

FF Sniper. Looks like a lot of people here haven't had their coffee yet.

Tosser I just know how much you love Indians so I thought I would yank your chain.

As far as grendel goes I did hear that it will not be operating at full speeds till 2012 I'll let the paranoid draw their own conculsions.

"Look up "electric universe."

Aflac!

I suspect the collider will be a dud. The universe had no beginning. Maybe they'll find something else.

Well that settles it. Ray says the universe has no beginning, but he only suspects it will be a dud.

What this has to do with searching for God particles, I can't imagine, but I'm all for such a solid consensus if it makes him happy.

CERN & FERMI crash protons and anti-protons, whereas Berkeley, Stanford and most others crash electrons and positrons. A proton is 1836 times more massive than an electron, so it takes lotsa juice to operate these things. Our Government considers operation of these facilities to be more important than delivering energy to your home.

Look up "electric universe."

Look up "irrational fool attached to every untenable fringe concept he has encountered".

Now that's a scary thought. You don't suppose we will all go through a worm hole and find ourselves back in the stone age do you? The rich will become subservient to the brawny again. There goes ray and motsop's plans to get rich someday on gold.

Our Government considers operation of these facilities to be more important than delivering energy to your home.

Bullshit. Back in the '90's, our government torpedoed a project called the Superconducting Super Collider that would have been several times more powerful than the LHC. Nobody in Illinois is going dark because the Tevatron has to get its juice.

I did hear that it will not be operating at full speeds till 2012

Hordes of mentally unstable youtube denizens will have a field day with that.

I hear they use the partially completed tunnels to grow mushrooms now.

I had two ghost shrimp in a small fish tank years ago in honor of the SSSC. I named them Quark and Nutrino. I wished they'd never scrapped that project.

Zombie, speaking of the doomed Texas SSC, "Einstein's Bridge" may be of interest to you. Great book.

Only fiction ... but ....
