Cosmic rayscharged particles that hurtle through space at nearly the speed of lighthave long baffled scientists. How do they acquire such tremendous velocities? Two new astronomical resultsone in this week's issue of Science and the other published online this month in Naturesuggest that the physicist Enrico Fermi nailed the answer 60 years ago: They get their oomph from exploding stars.

Interesting stuff, Zat. Thanks for publishing more of the article than usual and not forcing me to get passwords to journal sites from my scientist friends.... who ALWAYS change the password a couple of days after they give it to me. Punks.

Cosmic rays are so far out.

Cosmic Raystradamus is pretty far out, too.

Cosmic rays; I've been taking pictures with the damn things for years.

A mile down in rock they are a nuisance for particle physicists.

People who worry about cell phones and light bulbs are idiots.

Every few seconds tens of thousands of cosmic ray muons with kinetic energy of order 10 GEV pass through you.

Deal with it.

Cosmic Raystradamus is pretty far out, too.

Yeah, in a David Bowie-on-acid kind of way.

They get their oomph from exploding stars.

I could use a couple of exploding stars about now.

Been pulling up all the carpet off the floor and need some more "oomph."

"... tens of thousands of muons ...."

Would it help to make a hat out of a lead sheet? I see they are available online.
