Damn! There's still a rain forest? I thought they were all cut down in the 70's....

Ha Ha!

Nope we just keep taking them down. You must remember that 3000 years ago, the middle east for the most part was fairly lush. We are just continuing on our path.

But the temperature going up a 1/2 a degree in the next 10 years is a far more pressing issue don't you think????

Deforestation, you know, an environmental problem we could actually do something about.

Why do you hate the hamburger bush?

I'd gladly pay more for a hamburger now if meant more rainforest growth on Tuesday.

Me too.

A steer in a Nebraska feedlot, eating corn from Iowa, causes trees to come down in Brazil.

The logic is flawless!

Well, when humanity has finished strip-mining the earth's crust, destroying the ocean fisheries and forests and extracting all the easily accessible energy and mineral resources...

It's true that technological innovation can squeeze ever greater efficiencies [as per the Julian Simon/Lomborg cornucopia school] but there is an upper limit to that. Can't squeeze much efficiency from the last barrel of oil.

Happy extinction!

Vernon, the acreage of forest in the USA has actually increase in the last 70 years. Israel has planted so many trees that the amount of precipitation has grown. It has created its own microclimate there in the middle east.

But it is many more times offset by the 3rd world devastation, this is fact.

Wake up man!

One of the greatest statements on the issue ever written. 20 years ago.

Ignore the 80's outfit and hair.

"More Rainforest Every Year

"Fifty-five times more tropical rain forest is growing back each year than is being cut, according to a 2005 report on world forests from the UN: 38 million acres of primary forest is cut, but 2.1 billion acres of secondary forest is growing back on land that was once farmed, logged, or burned."

KBM: The 38 million is all virgin rain forest. Tamarins, Lemurs, monkeys, bird species all lose their habitat. What is growing back is SECONDARY: does not sustain them. Extinction is forever
