Hardening of the arteries and signs of heart disease have been detected in Egyptian mummies by a team of US and Egyptian scientists. "The findings suggest that we may have to look beyond modern risk factors to fully understand the disease," said Dr. Gregory Thomas of the University of California.

"So they ate at McDonalds, smoked too much and were couch potatoes?"

ok, if you were rich you got mummified right? and the rich people let all the slaves do the work. so I'm guessing all they did was sit around gorging on a diet of fatty water fowl (like duck alot of saturated fat)and lamb and watching their servants perform for them, then yes, they were couch potatoes who didn't exercise, ate badly, and watched entertainment all day.

also, most slaves probably didn't make it out of their twenties, so they didn't have a chance to get heart disease-- never mind that they probably only ate a handful of rice a day....

Good points, Nerfherder.

They still probably had a lot more fun than if they lived their life eating broccoli. Their dead now anyway.

Sort of interesting.

From www.ancientnile.com/uk --

...Bread was the staple diet of most Egyptians. The average kitchen was usually situated at the rear of the house, or on the roof. Mostly it was in the open, but may have been partially shade. Egyptian food was cooked in simple clay pots, using wooden utensils and stored in jars.

Beer was the national drink and was also made from barley. To improve the taste the Egyptians would add spices and it was usually stored in labelled clay jars. The importance of beer to the ancient Egyptians should not be underestimated as it was esteemed so highly that it was regularly offered as libation to the gods.

Wine for the upper classes was made from local vineyards. After the harvest was gathered, the workers would tread the grapes, and the juice collected Other wines were made from pomegranates or plums.

Even the poor people of Ancient Egypt ate a fairly healthy diet including vegetables, fruit and fish. But it was only the larger plantations that grazed animals, mainly because the average farmer had to use his limited land to grow crops. Poultry was mostly roasted for the table, but meat was mainly the privilege of the rich. Seasoning included; salt, pepper, cumin, coriander, sesame, dill, fennel, fenugreek, seeds etc.

...Although the ancient people did not write down their recipes, or use cook books, the ingredients needed to make most of the dishes are well known, many of which are still used in Egypt today.

#6 - Well, Chris, as the ancient Greek poet and philosopher Homer once asked in one of his famous epics, I forget which one exactly:
"Beer: Is there anything it can't do?"

Besides clear clogged arteries...

cairo, egypt is filthy. i spent a month there back in 2006 while my father was doing business with some rich egyptian hot shot. if you wear sandals around the city then at the end of the day your toes are black. when you leave by plane, you can literally see the cloud of yellow-brown smoke hovering above the city like a giant dirty meringue. the cab drivers try to rape you for insane amounts of $$$ if you want to go to the market or outside of the city. i was in a cab on a highway to giza during a traffic jam and the driver pulled off the road and drove across a few miles of sand to get back on the main road-- and about a hundred or so other cars were doing this maneuver at the same time as well! absolutely cutthroat and no rules, but the nighttime egyptian hosptiality, bar none, the finest that can be had! it almost makes up for all the insanity during the day.

"you can literally see the cloud of yellow-brown smoke hovering above the city like a giant dirty meringue."

The same can be said of Houston and LA!

Cairo is 5,000 years old and has a population of 14 million in its greater area.

What the fuck did you expect?

I guess some how I should give a shit about people's health 4,000 years ago.

You can always detect an rtard from how intellectually curious they are. Or aren't.

That's right, you should. You can't truly know where you are unless you know where you came from.
