From the Department of Justice: The Justice Department and IRS announced that over 14,700 taxpayers have come forward to report previously-undisclosed foreign bank accounts under the voluntary disclosure program the IRS implemented following the settlement. This figure represents almost double the initial numbers the IRS announced in October and dwarfs the number of voluntary disclosures received in 2008.

Lousy tax beatniks.

Good for them to come forward, at least.

Just goes to show, you make the penalty for non-compliance high enough and people will comply.

Kind of like the millions of dependents who "disappeard" when SS numbers were required.

Why didn't they all get audited?

It must be the IN thing now. Way to set a good example.

Maybe if the penalty for non-compliance were something substantial, and not, say, being appointed to head the Treasury Department, you might have more people who took it seriously. Until then, I plan on playing the Geithner card: if the head of the NY Fed and US Treasury doesn't understand the tax code, how do you expect me to?

That won't pass the reasonable cause standard. You will still be assessed penalties and interest.

I'll take my chances, and just assume that I'll either not be audited in the next 7 years, and if I am, that Geithner's IRS employee will be sympathetic to my argument that it's just too complex a code. If their stupid ass boss can't figure it out, neither should I.

I don't make enough to have a good chance of being audited. WOOOHOOO!

just assume

You better hope no one here knows how to track you down - the IRS has a reward for people who report tax cheats.

IRS employee will be sympathetic

You have obviously never worked with/against the Service.

Oh, I won't cheat. I'll just be ignorant.

Not a defense in any state.

I'll just be ignorant.

You could get plenty of affidavits to that effect from Drudge.

14,700????

I had no idea BHO had such a large cabinet!

I want to see the Democrat / Republican tally on this.

I wonder who those tax heroes are...

I want them to publish the list.

Do you think Cheney and Greenspan turned themselves in or are they still doing it?

I'll just be ignorant.

I thought you guys were on the same side.

Why doesn't the Fed have an Amnesty program to collect?

The States once in a while do it to raise money.

WOW...that's a lot of people!

Oh, I won't cheat. I'll just be ignorant.

In other words, He'll do both. That's why he joined the tea party groupies. He figures there is safety in numbers.

WOW...that's a lot of people!

WOW!!! That's a lot of multimillionaires. These aren't ordinary Americans just trying to get by. Most of them have been doing this for a lifetime. Just think how much money these assholes would owe if they actually were honest tax payers and had to pay their taxes like the middle class do.

In today's tough economic times it is nice to know that there are 14,700 people out there looking for work at high cabinet positions in our government.

Maybe they can get that Protocol Czar hired yet!

Maybe, we all can rise our heads out of the sand and see we don't need to pay an income tax to the feds? I mean, they have enough to spend already?

Look, a few trillion there a few here, what's the difference?

It's all about the change....

You hope for it, but it's the same. As it stands, the change is the same.

Prove me wrong?

Peace.

Maybe, we all can rise our heads out of the sand and see we don't need to pay an income tax to the feds?

Um... right. I think Wesley Snipes tried that one already. He can waste a dozen vampires with his bare hands, but he's no match for the IRS.

they have enough to spend already

What the hell are you talking about? 25% of the US is religiously forbidden from comprehending numbers as large as the national debt. Yes, I'm talking about the intellectually deficient filth known as "fundamentalists".

I wonder how many of these people will decide to revoke their U.S. Citizenship's...

...and emigrate overseas?

The United States has the most onerous tax laws in the world...

...I wouldn't blame these people one bit for leaving so they can keep what rightfully belongs to them.

Even if the vast majority of those 14,700 are Democrats.

from near the top...

"make the penalty for non-compliance high enough and people will comply"...

My sentiments exactly. As a single dad who pays,
not only his taxes but his child support and mortgage on time, all the time,
I have ZERO sympathy for those trying to Cheat the System.

especially since a good portion of those whom
cheat are amongst the richest among us...

I am just wondering what percent of the tax cheats,
14,700 actually represents...

I would be impressed if it were over 5% of all those whom do cheat...especially when I think of all the
"Cash only" businessmen and contractors I have met over
the years...this is just scratching the surface...

they were all applying for a job in the Obama Administration.

I can guarantee you that the majority of those evading taxes are not Dems. Democrats tend to grumble about paying taxes, and they don't necessarily like to pay them, but in the end they largely pay their taxes.

Republicans on the other hand whine like newborn babies, threaten not to pay, threaten to leave the U.S. so they can take all of their money with them (which would be a small price to pay to get them off of U.S. soil) form coalitions of like minded non-tax paying citizens, set up commune like groups and militia compounds threatening not to pay, join radical fundamentalist religious sects threatening not to pay, threaten secession from the U.S., and generally whine, rant, and carry on to the extent that one seriously doubts that they are the intellectually equivalent of say a 6 year old child.

Oh yeah, and almost forgot...then they blame it all on the Clintons or Obama, turn every argument on its ear and say that its really all about not giving in to Socialism or Communism (even though they are the ones not being Patriots by not paying their taxes)...

funny you don't see democrats enlisting in vast droves in all of those groups...just non tax paying Republicans and Wingnuts...

so much easier just to pay...

Wow. That's quite a guarantee.

And it's news to me that Tax-Dodgin' Timmy Geithner and Slum Lord Rangel are Republicans.

Never said all tax dodges are repubs...

Everyone knows politicians from both sides of the isle are, shall we say, "Truth Challenged", to do the right thing, and to always tell the truth...

But hey, take my words out of context again,
you're so used to it...

not that with a moniker like RightisRight I would
expect anything else...

(watch any Faux News lately?)

Don't watch much TV at all. I do know that conservatives are far more generous in charitable giving than liberals are; that's been well documented. So in your world, conservatives are . . . um . . . cheating on their taxes so they can keep more to give away. Or something. Fact is, there are enough wealthy and uber-wealthy liberals in this country that if they gave their share, we could eliminate poverty. And if the Gates/Rockefellers/Buffetts/ Kennedys/Heinz-Kerrys/etc--all libbies--wouldn't have plowed their entire fortunes into tax-exempt foundations, we wouldn't have deficits.

But in your little world, it's those rascally Repubs that are the problem. Funny, really. But it's fine--your Democratic "leadership" needs you to be stupid for awhile longer.

Just show them some of your "keep selling" posts and they will believe you were just too stupid to know any better.

"Don't watch much TV at all. I do know that conservatives are far more generous in charitable giving than liberals are; that's been well documented."

Because so many of them tithe at their churches.

Because so many of them tithe at their churches.

That's probably part of it, but it has also been documented that republicans are better tippers. I'll try to find a study I read on the internet. The restaurants of cities that hosted party conventions always got better tips when the republican were there.

And it's news to me that Tax-Dodgin' Timmy Geithner and Slum Lord Rangel are Republicans.

That's because you are a mental retard.

BTW...paying taxes late is not the same as off shore bank accounts that hide money so as to never pay taxes, but like I already said, RiR, you're a mental retard.

"cheating on their taxes so they can keep more to give away. Or something. "

I'd venture to say it's more on the lines of "or something"!!

The restaurants of cities that hosted party conventions always got better tips when the republican were there.

That's because democrats know better then to eat restaurant food. Too many bug parts, rat hairs, processed cholesterol and artificial flavoring, not to mention mop water and grilled sweat.

That's because democrats know better then to eat restaurant food.

Is "democrats don't eat at restaurants" your best answer? LOL Let's use truthful arguments, OK? Just a suggestion if you want to be taken seriously

Too many bug parts, rat hairs, processed cholesterol and artificial flavoring, not to mention mop water and grilled sweat.

Sounds like our Democratic controlled government's not doing their job. They need to tighten up with restaurant inspections and/or FDA guidelines

The really rich people figure out how to dodge taxes anyway. - George W. Bush, explaining why he won't tax the rich, Annandale, Virginia, Aug. 9, 2004 ...

"I think that we've had an economy that's been out of balance for too long. So the general principle of raising taxes on higher income Americans, like myself, and providing relief to those who haven't benefited as much from this new global economy, I think is a sound one." -- Barack Obama
