Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Wednesday, November 18, 2009

A helicopter belonging to a US-flagged fishing vessel, the Ocean Encounter, spotted the boat as it drifted off Nauru on Sunday. The group - initially of eight men - told rescuers they had been making a short crossing in PNG's New Ireland area on 14 September when they ran out of petrol.

The human spirit is an awesome thing.

Maybe grab a bite to eat, then I'd suggest a hot shower and a recliner. Take a couple days off.

A great story of perseverance. I hope there's a movie or book out of this.

That channel is called Spike.

they could make a movie and have them meet some mermaids. the mermaids invite them to their underwater lair where they make them into slaves (this is where the NC-17 rating comes in). the leader, played by a sexually incorruptable kirk douglas type, manages to plot an escape. five escape--one dies battling a giant squid while the other two are captured by harpies and imprisoned forever in a breeding nest.

They'll be back at sea when they get out of the hospital. If they were Americans, they'd get Social Security and sit at home drinking Ripple until they get arrested for burglary.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Any chance the Heene Family wrote the script ?

imprisoned forever in a breeding nest

That was my number one fantasy when I was a seventeen.

WILSON!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is certainly no time for tasteless humor, such as Monty Python and the lifeboat sketch, the gammy leg and all. www.youtube.com

I'm very happy there were survivors.

I can't imagine what they went through, feeling helpless when trying to pull that young man back in the boat and no one having the strength to do it.

Heartbreaking.

Where's CAPNBLIGH when you need him?

The beatings did not continue.

Morale did not improve.

And there they are.

That channel is called Spike.

Do you think the network execs could make a less subtle appeal to our genitals?

"I can't imagine what they went through, feeling helpless when trying to pull that young man back in the boat and no one having the strength to do it."

I can't imagine watching that moron jump into the water and not even having the energy to tell him exactly how stupid he is. Must have been frustrating.

LOL... I bet most still wouldn't get ti.

Try "Life of Pi" by Yan Martel. Excellent book about being lost at sea.

As a fisherman, I find it unbelievable that they had no form of backup communication, no EPIRB, nor enough supplies to last them for months. PISS POOR planning

Good call. I read that book on the beach a few years ago.

For being so inhospitable, the sea certainly holds an allure for us humans.

Who knows. That's one of my problems with the BBC - their articles usually leave out a lot of pertinent details.

Do you fish on large bodies of water? I generally fish from the shore of lakes, but when I do go onto the water I've never done so in bad weather or without a radio unless I was somewhere close to shore.

For being so inhospitable, the sea certainly holds an allure for us humans.

Indeed. That's why I spent six years in the Navy, chose a job offshore, and head to the beach as soon as I get back on shore after my three week hitch.

That sounds pretty cool. I love the sea, and I love being out on it where you can't see land. I don't know what specifically it is about the experience, but it holds a certain kind of enchantment. Every time I pass beyond sight of land, I get goosebumps and a giddy feeling of anticipation.

There is a psychological test called "oceanic boundlessness" that has been used by researchers to evaluate mystical experiences triggered by psychedelics (look about 1/4 through p. 100) . I have no clue what the "oceanic boundlessness" test entails, but I doubt whoever named it was a landlubber.

"oceanic boundlessness"

Yeah, that's very cool. Orange Sunshine will do that to you.

Yeah, that's very cool. Orange Sunshine will do that to you.

Psychedelics are fascinating drugs, but they are a means to an end that your mind can also achieve under its own power. I don't discourage their use. I only encourage their users to be pragmatic.

"but they are a means to an end that your mind can also achieve under its own power."

I pretty much agree with that. There are quite a number of modalities to achieve altered states of consciousness: flotation tanks, meditation, breathing, fasting, chanting, drumming, dancing, etc. It's all good.

"oceanic boundlessness" is a sub scale of the APZ-OAV test which is designed to measure altered states of consciousness, it is a questionnaire type test. The other two subscales are "dread of ego dissolution," and "visionary restructualization"

The EWL is another test with the subscales, "thoughtfulness-
contemplatives," "apprehension-anxiety," and "dejection".

As part of a study at UoA, I volunteered to take MDMA and then take the APZ-OAV test.

"As part of a study at UoA, I volunteered to take MDMA and then take the APZ-OAV test."

What?

What??

What???

Hey Andrea, can you score me some MDMA? Thanks, babe.

I guess Andrea saw this flyer...

Wow. What do you remember about the study?

It may be "good," but what do you take from it? Yes, some of these drugs can be taken for some enjoyable aspect of the experience, but there is much more to be learned by the study of these fascinating chemicals.

It's Bush's fault. If gas wasn't so damned high they could have afforded a few more gallons.

"Yes, some of these drugs can be taken for some enjoyable aspect of the experience, but there is much more to be learned by the study of these fascinating chemicals."

Yes that's true. I don't consider these substances to be recreational. Though I did in 1970. lol

I don't consider these substances to be recreational.

That tends to be the conclusion of anyone who has tasted them more than a couple of times.

Though I did in 1970.

The closest I get to 1970 is when I chill out to my collection of bootlegs from that era's musical titans. Hell, I've listened to Zeppelin's "No Quarter" too many times to count and it's still my favorite song to play. All most bands have done ever since is try to emulate their style in some way, and many of the rest pride themselves on live improvisation abilities that have been prized since the beginning of jazz.

" Hell, I've listened to Zeppelin's "No Quarter" too many times to count and it's still my favorite song to play."

Post a link, if you can find one. I don't recall that particular tune. Saw Zeppelin once in LA. Great band.

"That's the Way"

Greatest Zeppelin song EVAR.

From Led Zep III.

Greatest Zeppelin song EVAR.

No, that would be Kashmir

No, that would be Kashmir

Robert Plant agrees with you.

Kashmir is also one of my favorites. It's played in the same tuning as probably the most underrated Zeppelin epic: White Summer/ Black Mountain Side.

"No, that would be Kashmir"

I LOVE their sweaters!

Post a link, if you can find one. I don't recall that particular tune.

"No Quarter" is basically a showcase of John Paul Jones' keyboard expertise and Zeppelin's live improvisational ability. You're in for a treat. Link. Compared to other live performances I've heard, this one is tame.

Saw Zeppelin once in LA. Great band.

Do you remember when? I've got a ton of bootlegs. Most are poor audio quality, but there is a chance I have a recording of the show you went to.

"That's the Way"

Here ya go: That's the Way - Earl's Court 1975

"Do you remember when? "

No, but it was at the "Fabulous Forum" in Inglewood, California.

And for Goatman, a live recording of Kashmir from the No Quarter tour, backed by a string section:

Kashmir pt. 1

Kashmir pt. 2

No, but it was at the "Fabulous Forum" in Inglewood, California.

I have a recording of a show on 9/4/1970 at the Inglewood Forum in LA. Is that it?

The audio quality is mediocre, but the show is fucking good. I'm sure I could find a way to get it to you if you want it.

"I have a recording of a show on 9/4/1970 at the Inglewood Forum in LA. Is that it? "

That has to be it. Evidently they played it again in '75, but I wasn't there. By that time, I had switched gears and got into Coltrane, Miles Davis, etc.

Thanks for the links, but the internet Nazis block youtube.com from the rig.

However, I have the No Quarter CD at home so I know what it sounds like.

Obviously, they smelled so bad, sharks didn`t want to eat them.....

That has to be it. Evidently they played it again in '75, but I wasn't there.

Zepplein's 1975 US tour was amazing. There is a bootleg of a St. Louis show taken off of the soundboard and it will blow you away. It's a live best-of album.

Let me know if you want that '70 show, BTW. I can seed a torrent or email the tracks to you piecewise.

By that time, I had switched gears and got into Coltrane, Miles Davis, etc.

Have you ever delved into charlie parker? He's one of my favorite jazz musicians.

Thanks for the links, but the internet Nazis block youtube.com from the rig.

How do you manage to survive? I spend a few hours each day working with youtube music in the background.

However, I have the No Quarter CD at home so I know what it sounds like.

Kashmir is by far the best song off of that album.

ZH I saltwater fish, and probably the maximum distance off shore we go is 100 miles or so.

Something really sounds unusual about this 'crew' and this story. HOW do you lose clothes over board, and are stupid enough to jump after them???

I can't explain how he lost his clothes unless they were tattered and he got buffetted by a wave, but I do understand going after them. Clothing is the first line of defense against exposure -- both solar and thermal. They also work as makeshift flotation devices. They impress those points strongly on us at our mandatory two day bi-annual water survival/emergency helicopter egress course

Hey Andrea, what's an onironaut? Lucid dreamer?

It'll be interesting to get the full story: What they ate, how they captured rainwater to drink, etc.

There's going to be a discovery channel episode of "I Shouldn't Be Alive."

Sorry to be so late chiming in on the Zeppelin angle, but...

I saw Led Zeppelin in Louisville in April 1977 - one of my first concert experiences. As a still-innocent teen, I had no idea any group of 20,000 people could be that collectively stoned out of their minds. Good show, but they didn't play a lot of songs I really wanted to hear.

Here's a terrific summary of the show, including the setlist, two reviews, images of the tickets and some great newspaper photos: www.ledzeppelin.com

Pirated recordings of this show are available. Note the ticket price: Eight dollars and fifty cents!
