Love it or hate it, people smoke marijuana - lots of it. In some states marijuana consumption and posession have been decriminalized, and even legalized for medicinal purposes. But, have you ever wondered how large the economics of Marijuana were? Us too. As a result ,have decided to put together this graphic, which illustrates the popularity of marijuana consumption, the federal tax dollars spent to keep marijuana illegal, and the possible tax revenues that could be generated if marijuana production were legalized and taxed like any other agricultural product. It is especially interesting, with regards to the Great Depression.

Coming soon - Marijuana revenuers!

If marijuana were legal, people would still grow it. It would be schwag, but a lot of people would grow their own stash. The government would still be able to sell the dankest of dank nuggets for a tidy sum, but the proceeds from selling weed will never be a tremendous cash cow.

The big boost to the our will come when the billions of dollars and countless man-hours spent on our foolhardy "drug war" are redirected toward more useful ends.

Nevermind the fact that the legalization of drugs in the US would obliterate the source of income for the murderous drug cartels threatening our neighbors.

States can't pay their bills yet still incarcerate marijauna users instead of taxing the stuff.

America is a stupid country, that really is our problem.

Nah. There's still meth, coke, and heroin. Bigger profit makers and easier to transport.

You really think that taxing this WONT spur guerrilla growers? I dont want "medicinal" weed. I want the MJ for the same reason I like beer, and some varieties of whiskey to get loaded. Hey at least I'm honest about it.

your joking right? Do you REALLY think they are making their money off of weed? Um try Cocaine, Heroin, and XTC. Now those are the REAL money makers for those in the illicit drug market. Dont forget out about illegal arms trade either. Eliminating weed from their palette of sales will do theme like a 4%-6% dip in all around sales. Drops in the bucket. Most green is now grown in the boarders of the US or up in Canada anyway now....

Legalization is not going to happen without taxation. Period. Most people aren't going to grow their own cannabis to avoid taxes any more than people grow their own tobacco or brew their own liquor. It's outrageous to be sure, since prescription drugs are not taxed, but it's the only politically viable approach.

"States can't pay their bills yet still incarcerate marijauna users instead of taxing the stuff."

Bullshit. Name ONE, just ONE person sitting in Federal prison as opposed to 3-6 months in the county "klink" for ONLY possession of less than a 3oz. of green that wasn't bagged up for individual resale. I can't seem to find one and believe me I have looked. Possession and Distribution are two different crimes. Also, there is a very real difference between the county lock up and Federal prison. I'm in favor of legalization all the way, but god dammit disinformation like this is NOT the way to make a point.

Ahm, I believe he said "legalization of drugs", not "legalization of weed".

I recall a rather large illegal still was brought down a couple months ago. He wasn't producing it for ONLY himself either.

Well I'm only in favor of Legalizing green. all that other shit KILLS. Period. look at all the greats that have died from ODs. I cant think of one person whose cause of death is listed as a Marijuana OD.

"Well I'm only in favor of Legalizing green. all that other shit KILLS."

The other shit is dangerous, but most of the killing is a result of it being illegal.

The big boost to our economy will come when the billions of dollars and countless man-hours spent on some of our more foolhardy "entitlement programs" are redirected toward more useful ends.

Dope - not just a word describing the product.

"Dope - not just a word describing the product."

Yeah it also describes bible-thumpers.

It would be awesome for me if drugs especially weed were legalized.

Product liability
Work comp
Other legitimate fiancial exposures that require protection

$$$$$
