If Obama decides to cut the deficits and jettison the jobs programs, the economy will slide right back into recession. Is that what he wants, or is he just an unwitting victim of Summer's crummy advice?

Summers knows that the 3.5 percent surge in GDP in the 3rd Quarter was entirely the result of Obama's fiscal stimulus. He also knows that government jobs programs will increase demand, boost consumer confidence, add to state revenues, and spur growth. So why is he caving in to the deficit hawks and the dollar demagogues instead pushing Obama to rally the country to use the nation's vast resources to put its people back to work?

The Fed's monetary remedies have flopped. The Fed already has its back against the wall. It's balance sheet has ballooned to more than $2 trillion in the last year alone. It's getting no traction from its zero percent interest rates, and its $1.75 trillion quantitative easing program is set to end by the end of the 1st Quarter 2010.

The long-term picture for workers and families is even worse than current job loss numbers alone would suggest. Many of the lost jobs are gone forever, including construction jobs, finance jobs and manufacturing jobs. Recent studies suggest that a quarter of U.S. jobs are fully out-sourceable over time to other countries.

17.5 percent "real" unemployment is only part of the story, too. There's also 300,000-plus foreclosures every month, record personal bankruptcies, plummeting state revenues, and countless maxed out homeless shelters and food banks. We're in the throes of a low-grade depression that requires emergency mobilization aimed at expanding the public workforce and increasing wage-and-benefits packages to spark greater demand.

Larger public workforce. Larger bureaucracy. Big government.

The problem is that everyone says they did not vote for her, yet someone had to.

I gotta agree with "full of" for a change because even though Palin lacks some intelligent communication skills she was very good to the citizens of Alaska. She worked to clean up politics (really no quid pro quo) and garnered substantial royalty payments from their oil reserves, the benefit of which was directed back to Alaskan taxpayers. This of course is Socialism for the right people. In Washington DC Socialism is reserved exclusively for the worlds richest most corrupt campaign donors.

The donation list was extracted from a huffpost slideshow. I have nothing else on it.

And she rigged the alaska pipeline bid so that only one company,co-incidentally her biggest contributor, could win the 500 million stimulus funding. And then there's the whole loss of records of the welfare checks to alaskans, a boo-boo by one of her many buddy political appointees. And alaska is the biggest welfare state per capita sucking on the federal teat.

But you forget her biggest accomplishment-she torpedoed John Mccain's presidential bid.

President Obama signed the Worker, Home-ownership and Business Assistance Act of 2009, he extended unemployment benefits and renewed the first-time home-buyer tax credit for a while, but hidden deep inside the law was a tax break for businesses that did well in the boom years.

According to lobbying records, home builders paid $6 million to their lobbyists through the end of October this year, "much of focused on arguing for the tax loss carry-forward." Pulte Homes for example, spent $210,000, for which it'll receive $450 million in refunds.

The problem here is that this public policy decision was made with little to no input from the public.

If everyone was complaining about the same things, we'd already have a critical mass in that respect, but opposition is split in two groups, each protesting different things, which in their own right help to keep the two groups separate.

Loved that show. By the end of the series I knew that I was coming back to NYC too, and how bitter sweet that was going to be. Once in a while I think about the scene where he is on the ferry coming back to the city, riding past the Statue of Liberty. Chokes me up every time.

Me too! Never missed an episode of Northern Exposure. One of the lawyers I worked with when it first came on the air came up to me at work one day and said "Hey, there's a new, kind of quirky show on tv you might like. It's really good." I decided to check it out and watched every show afterwards until it went off the air.
