In a joint statement, American Conservative Union founder David Keene, Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist and presidential candidate Bob Barr say moving suspected terrorists to the Thomson, Illinois prison facility, "makes good sense."

Whadda ya want to bet that we have rwingnuts around here that are Righter than the Rightest of these very Tightest of Righties?

Playing political football with terrorists is about as low as one can go.

"Playing political football with terrorists is about as low as one can go."

Better them than us.

But I get your point.

They're not conservatives. They're RINOS (or is it RINOSCERAE?). They should be purgigated, like when you eat a meal of spoiled donkey meat and bile-sour refried freejollies and suck from a communal straw dipped in a Sterno can filled with fuming, homemade tequila at a really, really bad Messican cantata. Mene, mene, tekel uphrasin! Hubba, hubba, rubba, dubba, sha, na na! Praise the Lord!

We must close GITMO or else we will be stuck forever. It has to happen SOON. Very Very soon.

Larry

We may never know the answer to my #1, as none of the Tighties here seem to want to comment on their conservative brethren's Moment of Clarity.

The libbies run Congress now. Any one of the 535 Congressmen can ask for Gitmo detainees to be put in their district. But it seems to me that the NIMBY concept doesn't extend only to right-wingers. When it comes to things like storing nuclear waste, building nuclear plants, building prisons--the libtards have alligator arms just like everyone else.

Taxpayers, they note, have already invested $145 million in the facility. "The scaremongering about these issues should stop," they write. "[There is] absolutely no reason to fear that prisoners will escape or be released into their communities."

Really?

When the terrorists have served their prison sentences...

...where on earth do you think they will serve out their paroles?

If you answer, why in their communities of course, then you would be correct.

What then?

Barry promised that Gitmo was to be closed a long time ago.....what? it is still open??????

"Taxpayers have already invested $145 million in the facility."

As if taxpayers had a choice. I didn't choose to make that .. errrrr... "investment". Total non-sequitur. What? -- putting a few murdering bastard shitheads in there is the answer??

The argument should not be whether or not there's a danger that these scumbags will escape from the prison. The odds of that are miniscule.

For me, it's the very notion that GITMO just HAS TO BE CLOSED!! There's no reason in the world to shut it down. NONE!

America should assert itself as the dominant world power it once was -- the greatest country on earth; deliver more aid to the entire world than any 10 countries combined as it always has and of course continues to do; get control of its borders and shut down the welfare give away circus on my tax money; rebuild. We should walk softly and carry a big ass stick. Kick ass when F-ed with, and take names later. We should encourage exceptionalism, entrepreneurship and hard work!.. Discourage big government and confiscatory taxes, and get back to freaking business! Socialism NEVER works.

OK then - there's a comment from one of the "Tighties", Corky.

"Barry promised that Gitmo was to be closed a long time ago.....what? it is still open??????"

I believe the original date was January 2010. We're still in 2009 if I'm not mistaken.

"When the terrorists have served their prison sentences...

...where on earth do you think they will serve out their paroles?"

Tell me you are kidding...please....just tell me you are kidding!!!!

I know the argument is that, when released, "the terrorists will be deported." What happens if/when their country of origin says "we don't want them" and refuses to take them? Anyone think that won't happen?

...where on earth do you think they will serve out their paroles?

If you answer, why in their communities of course, then you would be correct.

like any other illegal alien in prison, they'll be deported when their sentence ends, if not sooner.

Nice to see Bendor being so quick to pick up another Depends filler when even the righties discredit a previous one.

I predict the righties will next be whining "what aout if the get married while in prison"? before the end of the week.

None of these on trial will ever be released. Were they to somehow not be convicted, which is nearly impossible considering the top two having spent days on al-Jazeera TV detailing their crimes prior to capture, they would be turned over to the INS for further prosecution.

Barry promised that Gitmo was to be closed a long time ago.....what? it is still open??????

yeah those BushCo messes really are hard to clean up aren't they? We need a quicker picker upper! Care to volunteer to help or is your job to just bitch about how long it takes clean up the messes of BushCo? Oh, but let's not talk about how we got here right?

"Barry promised that Gitmo was to be closed a long time ago.....what? it is still open??????"

YEAH!

Bush gets "Fifty Years" to judgement ---- "Barry" just 11 months!

Dockj, I am with you. I just don't understand how that attitude does not clearly prvail. I think it is a laziness we allow. My only problem with the Gitmo thing is this should have been taken care of witj swift military justice. Keep them on a deserted island for all I care. They are the scum of the earth and have no tolerance. Send them off to virgin land. But I don't want them on our 48 state soil.

Deported to where exactly?

I see you really DO NOT understand this situation.

IF that were the case, we could simply "deport" them now.

We don't because there is nowhere to deport them to - even their birth countries don't want them.

So again, I ask. Where will these fuckers go when THEY ARE RELEASED FROM PRISON?

If these limp-dick fools end up in our society, I think some very bad things are going to happen.

A one-term Obama presidency for starters. If he somehow dodges impeachment that is..

Were they to somehow not be convicted, which is nearly impossible considering the top two having spent days on al-Jazeera TV detailing their crimes prior to capture

There are over 200 inmates at Guantanamo Bay. Have all of them been detailing their crimes? If not, then how can you be so certain that it is "nearly impossible" for some of these people to win at trial?

they would be turned over to the INS for further prosecution.

What would INS prosecute them for? Most (if not all) of the detainees were not captured on American soil.

There are 5 coming to NY.

Funny as hell, Lil' Joe trying to out-wingnut the likes of Grover Norquist and Bob Barr, roflmfao!!

If these guys go free at trial, that's exactly what they will be...

...free to move in next door to your kids school.

I sure did not expect Obama to doubled own on stupid so easily.

If these fools are indeed innocent until proven guilty, then we must also immediately stop our military strikes against al gaya and the tallybuns.

Don't we need to prove them guilty first too?

If he somehow dodges impeachment that is..

You righties have one extremely long shot at that. It starts with sweeping the 2010 elections.

As soon as the GOP comes up with a platform that is simultaneously electable and still mollifies the storm (tempest in a teapot) troops they will get right on it.

like any other illegal alien in prison, they'll be deported when their sentence ends, if not sooner.

No arguing with your analysis on that.

Personally, I think the GOP is royally fucked. The Conservative Party is breaking away...and rightfully so.

There are 5 coming to NY.

They are being brought there from Guantanamo to face trial, dipshit. Are you suggesting that INS is going to convict them of immigration violations for being in New York for trial?

#10 During his campaign he said first 100 days in office and then backpeddled when he figured out he couldn't do it.

Dockj missed the point entirely on why we must close Gitmo down. He even said it himself, "America should assert itself as the dominant world power it once was -- the greatest country on earth...".

It is because of the asinine concept of using land in a Communist country to promote torture and avoid the human rights issues covered by the Geneva convention that has turned the world against war criminals like Bush and Cheney and consequently the American people too. This evil self justification does not wash in a world duped into supporting the Iraq war in the first place. Of course sentiment is turning against the USA. This whole concept of enemy combatants as opposed to prisoners of war is a fabricated lie and although many Americans still don't get it, the rest of the world does.

All I can say is they should be flown back to their country of origin and if those countries don't like it, let them convict and hang them. It never should have been made our problem.

Face it righties, Bushism was a major fuck up for all of us.

Dorky? Where did you go?

No they won't you fucking idiot. They are not citizens. Jesus Christ the stupid runs strong on this thread.

$1,000,000,000.00 for 4 years to watch about 100 terrorists isn't scaremongering. It is just plain stupid and a ridiculous way to waste taxpayer's hard earned money.

They are the scum of the earth and have no tolerance.

Most of the detainees have already been shipped home, (deported to you Bendor)to saudi arabia or even Palau. They were not terrorists, just dupes who the CIA paid 25 grand for. Hell karsai had welcome home parties for some of them.

Indeed, government documents indicate more than 500 detainees were released or transferred from Guantanamo while George W. Bush was president. A White House executive order issued on the second day of Obama's presidency said, "The federal government has moved more than 500 such detainees from Guantnamo, either by returning them to their home country or by releasing or transferring them to a third country."

That's backed up by a fact sheet from the military task force that runs the detention camp, which says 520 detainees had been released or transferred by March 2009.

Not for nuthin, but an all expense paid trip to Palau sounds like a pretty good bargain. Sounds like a Japanese game show gone bad ;P

Few friends in NYC are a little disappointed about trials there... I only hope the justice system works a little better than it did for OJ... If they release KSM on a technicality it may not be good for civil unrest up there...

Guantanamo is there to allow presidents to circumvent American laws such as habeas corpus, the right to a speedy trial and not using cruel and unusual punishment. When the Supreme Court ruled against him Bush simply used a signing statement or got his stooges in Congress to pass bills allowing the violations.

So the time is well overdue for this deliberately deceptive and illegal anomaly and national embarrassment to be consigned to the trashbin of history. If it takes the support of a bunch of ultra right-wingers with money and influence among the loonies to help it along then so be it.

If we are going to keep them in the slammer, why close GITMO?

It's completely nonsensical.....

Another grand example of PrezBo giving away something in order to gain nothing in return

Well...sure...as long as you consider how the rest of the world views us as nothing.

Already, Mark Kirk, the Republican Senate candidate in Illinois, has blasted the administration for considering the Thomson facility.

"As home to America's tallest building, we should not invite Al Qaeda to make Illinois its number one target," Kirk said in a letter circulated Saturday.

This is the ridiculous scaremongering that must get publicity to stop.

A Republican lawmaker in Illinois said his GOP colleagues would be "idiots" to kill a proposal to transfer terrorist suspects from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to the maximum-security prison in Thomson, Illinois.

Representative Jim Sacia of the state's 89th District accused Republicans in Washington -- including Senate candidate, Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill) -- of risking thousands of local jobs in their demagoguery of the detainee issue.

"My thinking on this is extremely positive," Sacia told the Huffington Post. "If we lose this opportunity. All I can think of is we literally are idiots. I mean that sincerely."

Corky, here's a newsflash for you. Your trite rambling of 'righter than right...' shows your limitations of ignorance.

I know in your brain, there is only a barometer of a 'rightness' or 'leftness'. But consider the bigger picture.

Draw a horizontal line.
Place the word TOTALITARIAN on one end and the word ANARCHY on the opposite end.

(the "left" and "right" barometer shifts over time, so it is not a useful indicator. In fact, at present both left and right are both very near the TOTALITARIAN end of the scale)

Neither extreme is ideal, so a proper balance must be achieved:

*govt is necessary in any civilized society
*govt it is basically a non-productive expense with an overhead cost
*govt by nature is dishonest
*govt is inevitably an enemy of individual freedom
*whatever is done by govt always costs more than if done by individual or small groups
*govt by its size, authority will perpetuate error and create geometrically and cumulative effect of that error
*As societies become comfortable over time, the trend is for govt to take over central control, thus causing govt to have more responsibility over the success of the economy and welfare of citizens
(A govt trying to step in and improve the workings of a free market is like a man who takes a lighted lantern outdoors at noon of a bright June day to show you the sun. But a government's answer to any criticism as to the inadequacy of the lantern is always to bring more lanterns and then more lanterns -- until eventually the smoke and glare of the lanterns so seriously interfere with and shut off the light of the sun that everybody actually has to work mainly by lantern light).
*As govt increases in power, and as a means of increasing its power, it always has a tendency to squeeze out the middle class -- to destroy or weaken the middle for the benefit of the top and the bottom.
*The form of government is not nearly as important as its quality. Justice and a lack of arbitrariness are two characteristics of a government that are most important to the welfare and happiness of a people.
*Neither the form of government nor its quality is as important as its quantity. [Thomas Jefferson expressed part of it in his famous dictum that that government is best which governs least. But Jefferson was thinking of the extent of a government's power more than of the extensiveness of the government itself]

The increasing quantity of government, in all nations, has constituted the greatest tragedy of the Twentieth Century. Let's spotlight just one particular result of this tragic development, which has occurred in connection with man's age-old worry war. That result is the frequency, the length, the extensiveness, the horrible destructiveness, and the totality of impact on the population, of the wars of the Twentieth Century. To pose a phrase for the measurement of war, let's call it the day-number-horror unit. In the use of that three way calculation we multiply the days of suffering by the number of people who suffer, by the depth of the suffering, to arrive at an appraisal. Then I believe you will find that pretty generally throughout history -- despite other factors causing occasional exceptions -- and very definitely throughout recent centuries, the day-number-horrors measure of any war has been proportional to the contemporary extensiveness of government. In fact and specifically, it has been directly proportional to the product of the quantities of government in the nations involved at the time a war was fought.

Also, you will find that it is the huge quantity of government which, more than anything else, makes these tremendously destructive wars not only possible, but unavoidable. It is not only that governments carry their peoples into horrible and unnecessary wars, but it takes a very huge quantity of government to carry its people into the totalitarian struggle which war has now been made by this same quantity of government. Reduce all the governments of all the nations of the world to, perhaps one-third of their present size -- not one-third of their power, nor one-third of their quality, but just to one-third of their bureaucratic numbers, their extensiveness, their meddling in the lives of their subjects -- and you would immediately accomplish two things. You would reduce the likelihood of war between hostile nations to at most one-ninth of its present probability, and the destructiveness of any wars that did take place in the same proportion.
