The Obama administration expects Congress to begin moving to overhaul the nation's immigration laws early next year, while improved border security and a drop in migration caused by the economic downturn make passage "far more attainable" than in 2007, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Friday.

Yeah Right. NEITHER Party wants to touch immigration.

Larry

If President Obama wants to make a push for this he would try it in 2013 (if he wins), not 2010.

Liberals have a very short memory when it comes to one of their own. 2010 is a perfect time for Obama to push for amnesty for illegal aliens.

BTW is Obama's aunt sill in the country?

"2010 is a perfect time for Obama to push for amnesty for illegal aliens."

No it's not. Ronald Reagan waited until he got reelected before signing an amnesty bill.

When Reagan did amnesty, people assumed it would be a one time deal and that henceforth immigration laws would be strictly enforced. If we amnesty now, we'll probably have to do it again in 2035, and if we do that, what is the point of having immigration laws in the book?

What a futile plan, waste of taxpayer's dollars in time and effort to address and nothing more that a 'teaser' to make honorable citizens feel as if something beneficial will take place.

How about ENFORCING THE IMMIGRATION LAWS THAT ALREADY EXIST????!!! How about the fed enforcing immigration laws by supporting border control, immediate deportation, cessation of any and all benefits to illegals and putting the money they would waste on 'reform' (what a crock) into a nationwide capture system for each state to insure that there are no persons illegally in this country?

Nah, that would make too much sense.

I say fix it! Government is slaping the faces of ALL who have worked hard and followed the law to become citizens of these United States of America!

The preamble didn't say "promote the illegal welfare at hand..." now did it?

I guess now (post trillions of bailouts and foolish foreign spending habit from current and past administrations) current administration is tackling that nasty problem of funding their stupid socialistic spending habits by putting more taxpayers on the roll.

"When Reagan did amnesty, people assumed it would be a one time deal and that henceforth immigration laws would be strictly enforced."

Absolutely baloney. The US Chamber of Commerce lobbied continually to have enforcement as lax as possible, to leave the borders as open as possible and to let as many cheap laborors as possible flow into the country. They are still lobbying for lax immigration enforcement.
We have all known how to deal with immigration all along, fine the God Damned employers who hire them, put them in jail if fines don't work. This isn't rocket science it's class warfare and the middle and working classes are losing.

Badges!

We don't need no stinking immigration reform. We need a Government that promotes the general welfare, one part of which is strick enforcement of existing laws, not at the border, which should be open for every tourist, at the employer, who is promoting personal welfare today, at the expense of the general welfare for the rest of time, including himself later.

I want to see these employers do the perp-walk on the six o'clock news. And I want their names splashed all over the TV and newspapers. I think that would work to stigmatize these assholes.

Immigration enforcement would create jobs for Americans.

#4,
Yea - his Aunt Pettutie (sp?) is still here in Mass. I'm footing her bills!!

I love it when the comment is made that we are a nation of laws-- that may be true but we're also a nation that doesn't enforce those laws when they're inconvenient. Either we should enforce the immigration laws or get rid of them-- if there's anything I detest it's hypocrisy. And it's always the employers that don't abide by the laws that make out economically and the ones that obey the laws can't compete and lose out. We've become a nation of losers and cheaters--- those who work around the law and cheat win out and the honest are competing on a level field and get constantly taken advantage of-- they're the same saps that then pay their fair share of taxes. We sure have screwed this country up royally.

Too true.

matsop, I agree. Imagine if you were a businessman and you wanted to be an honest one, but if you did that your business would be at a competitive disadvantage. I am sure many people hire illegals because if their competitors do it, they are forced to do it too. If employers were severaly punished, it would have a multiplier effect as people would no longer be forced to hire illegals to compete with the scumbagas that do.

Currently, running a business is hard as heck and then when you try to be honest in it and have to compete against individuals that aren't it's not only harder but also demoralizing. Fortunately, in my current business I don't have the immigration issue to contend with.

The military style checkpoints on our nation's freeways have got to go!

The Border Patrol needs to focus on the Border, not on commuters going from Phoenix to San Diego.

I mean, everytime I pass one of the them, I fear the dog might smell my bag of weed...

..although it might be cool if they did find it so I could laugh at them as they arrested me for a couple of blunts!

...do illegal immigrants smell different or something? Why do they need dogs to determine a person's race? Why doesn't the Government just be honest and say what the checkpoints really are...

...a backdoor way to apprehend drunk drivers and pot smokers.

I think they are an unconstitutional impediment to interstate commerce and the free movement of U.S. citizens.

Fucking waste of time, money, and untold barrels of foreign oil by vehicles stopped, unconstitutionally, on the freeway.

Is that before or after many dems loose their congressional seats?

By overhaul, she must mean amnesty followed by maintaining the status quo.

Maybe they're not after you and you blunts. That area you're talking about is known as the "Cocaine Corridor", or at least it was in the mid-90's when I was there.

bring back the quota system.

I guess by "overhaul" they mean that the laws will be changed, rather than enforced? Certainly easier than actually doing one's job.

I will believe in an "overhaul" when I see it. Some political footballs are just too hot for politicians from either Party to run with. I just don't see it happening for at least another decade.

Are you willing to include government agencies like the city of Milwaukee that had had illegals working for them for over 5 years? Are you willing to include the school districts that provide a free education to illegals and even hold special classes for them to help them at your childs expense? Are you willing to include the hospitals and federal, state, and local officals that close their eyes to the illegal immigrants and give them food stamps and WIC money at your expense?
