One of the worst abuses in the international labor markets is the use of child labor. The most recent report on the issue by the International Labor Organization found that as of 2004 more than 218 million children were engaged in illegal work, as defined by international treaties. It's estimated that 126 million of these children were engaged in hazardous work such as "mining or handling chemicals."

"business newsletter "Inside U.S. Trade" reports that business groups are "worried" about the effects of such a provision, and they expect to see industry lobbyists and foreign governments profiting from child labor to form an "ad hoc" coalition to oppose it"

in a nut shell!

Very interesting. Walmart would collapse.

Baucus is trying to get his constituents to forget about his participation in HC reform obstruction by paying some lip service to this touchy feely patriotic issue that will probably never come to pass anyway.

Does anyone seriously believe that our government would enforce this ban, even if they pass it?

Just as well as they enforce immigration law, I'm sure.

Very interesting. Walmart would collapse.

Sure, because everyone buys their coal and molybdenum from Wal-Mart, in the handy 1-ton bag!

What an idiot.

FTA: MSNBC host Rachel Maddow covered the story last night. Addressing the business interests opposing the measure directly, she said, "You think that child labor and slave labor and forced convict labor are cheap and therefore cool with you? Go ahead, make your case. I would love to hear it . you child labor-endorsing, pro-slavery freaks."

Luffs it.

RM purely rawks.

So these business groups don't "want to be seen" as opposing basic human rights measures but they still wanna oppose them? That pretty much wot we're talking about here?

KK.

Spud to the pro-forced labor/child labor/prison labor business "coalition":

Go fuck yerselves.

Preferably with a pointy stick.

Till you bleed out.

That is all.

/Good eye, MMike.

Be Well.

Yep.

Almost everything imported into this country has child labor in it.
Food. Textiles. Chemicals. Automobiles (who do you think builds those parts in mexico?). Shoes. Most of the toys you buy your children.
In fact, without this child labor/slave labor, you wouldnt have your "american" lifestyle.

You dont care because it isnt in your backyard, otherwise you would consume a whole lot less.

You'll still buy nikes' at $120 a pop, manufactured with child labor for less than $3 bucks.

Civilized my ass, bunch of fucking deniers.

In fact, without this child labor/slave labor, you wouldnt have your "american" lifestyle.
